Comparing the paint splatters, under/over spray and other marks, it very much looks like the piece was genuinely shredded and not just hidden with a clever trick.

The most simple explanation is often the correct one. This piece is 100% shredded IMO.

I agree it's different. But the posts above were comparing this banksy to the rauschenberg. That's how the Bambi relates.
Interesting idea about destruction. Is destroying your own work (banksy) > then destroying the work of another? (Rauschenberg, Bambi)
Sure the where and how matters. But that's another topic that many seem to be given the banksy a slide...
Man was Bambi ahead of the mark... Well behind rauschenberg but ahead of banksy? ๐๐

I don't remember what she did to be honest. Painted over a Banksy print wasn't it? Probably a WCP version... and far more like the sort of thing The Chapman Brothers regularly do than this Banksy stunt.

I agreed there is a difference. But like I said my comment was in regards to the rauschenberg comparison and the idea of destruction to create art.
And I'm ignoring it for this conversation but the 'difference' ie location, means and methods is a whole other topic....
Concept is the same.
Only difference is the connotation. And your statement of 'bad artist's confirms that.
Whether you think she's a bad artist or not or you think she isn't very skilled. The concept is exactly the same as rauschenberg and similar to banksy. To dismiss that cause you think she is 'bad' is contradictory.

she is floating around in standard gravity, while showing off her ruby red lipstick (as you do) and carrying an old kodak instamatic and 2 little red sink plungers.
I think she maybe a plumber? off to do some plumbing while singing an old Sinatra song with subtitles
Brilliant, just brilliant, love a bit of Bambi

This is actually a good point. He didn't destroy any artwork, he actually completed the artwork. The "destruction" was the art, not the painting. Discuss

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Mirus Gallery on Oct 15, 2018 20:47:48 GMT 1, I think you need to read through the thread I posted earlier, on the comparison not to Rauschenburg but to Yves Klein. Gagosian posted a comparison of this piece to Rauschenburg that was critiqued In the twitter thread. I don't see the relationship to rauschenburg or any direct relationship to what his conceptual approach was to destroying the dekooning.
What Banksy did was not in any way associated with the same concept, other than a work being destroyed. There are no similarities in approach IMO. Also when entering this discussion with Raushenburg you are entering a new arena with which to compare their work with. The canon of those artists has already been discussed and documented at length in theory and concept. I like the comparison to Klein little better. "The staging of the economic value of a work of art through its destruction was much more aptly revealed - and parodically caricatured - in Yves Kleinโs โZone of Immaterial Pictorial Sensibilityโ piece".
In this piece actual destruction of the work completed the work. In Banksy case the destruction of the work leaves a work of art still. Destruction is not realized completely, it is only another evolution of the work of art. It actually gains value versus losing value. Which to me is why we cant compare artists like Klein and Rauschenburg to this work, as Banksy seems to want to keep this work intact.
These other artists actually set out to destroy something, whereas Banksy sets out to create a spectacle and create a new work. You can see the artist creating also an aesthetic new work with how and where the work stopped shredding. This seems to be a calculated rendering of a new image that keeps the original image still in focus. The work was never shredded completely falling to the floor. Its calculated ending is like a painter or sculpture using composition as tool, more than I see him using a purely conceptual approach. But this new work is just as commercially traceable as the original and thus no destruction took place only transformation. Maybe compare him to another artist, but not Rauschenburg.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Not 4 The Thril on Oct 15, 2018 21:04:33 GMT 1, to me it doesnt really matter if banksy put the shredder in 6years ago or 2 weeks ago. it doesnt matter to me if the auction house was in on it or not. its a funny stunt that is exactly on brand with what banksy represents.
as far as trying to break down the blade sizes in the video to the way the paper was shredded- who cares. banksy is great at telling his story his own way. that video looks way cooler with him making it from scratch than it would if he went to the store bought a home paper shredder took it apart and stuck it in a frame. he controls his own narrative. he doesnt care about destroying his own work-- i think he just cares about creating a conversation about something or a subject that a lot of people wouldnt pay attention to otherwise.

I guess thereโs no point in championing the causes you believe in without the funds to do it. If you sell a piece to a wealth collector you can take that money and help the people that you think are deserving of that wealth.
