A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by lukin56 on Oct 16, 2018 17:42:05 GMT 1, I guess thereโs no point in championing the causes you believe in without the funds to do it. If you sell a piece to a wealth collector you can take that money and help the people that you think are deserving of that wealth. But that's not what happened here. Banksy isn't seeing the direct funds from this sale. or is he?

Banksy isn't seeing the direct funds from this sale. I've been wondering about this.
I assume it was all Banksy right from the start, and the consigner was a stooge (otherwise they really did destroy someone else's valuable property)... So once the buyer agreed to go ahead anyway, and he issued a new COA, who got the money?
Will Banksy do something with it, or is Jo Brooks considerably better off, or has it really been in a few hands before this sale (Doubt it!).

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Happy Shopper on Oct 16, 2018 17:50:00 GMT 1, For those aruging this is some conceptual genius of destorys to create more valuable artwork. Why is banksy making his art more valuable to the elite buyers of his work that he supposively dispises? And doing so for the biggest auction house in the world which he also supposively dispises? Why do you assume he knew the stunt would make it more valuable?
Maybe he thought the buyer would pull out and the piece would be returned to him (or a very angry consigner, who he'd have to apologise too*). Maybe the shredder stopping half way wasn't intended either.
*I don't think this would be the case as I'm fairly certain he must have consigned it himself through a friend.

I'm not assuming that but I think someone before implied it. There was a comment that this is just part of the 'work' and thus the work before had was an unfinished work and thus less valuable...
personally I see a lot of over thinking and pushed narratives... that may be the ultimate work of art by banksyโฆ I do think this is the case with a lot of his work. make art watch art world go round and round in finding deeper or made up narratives.

I only see you creating a new narrative and assuming Banksy's intensions. We can't possibly know what he thought about future value... So why attack just because of what, possibly unintensionally, happened? Plus any value isn't proven until it's sold anyway!
On the subject of it being "complete" before or after... It was built with a f**kingshredder in it! Guess what was intended to happen...

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by moron on Oct 16, 2018 22:27:01 GMT 1, For those aruging this is some conceptual genius of destorys to create more valuable artwork. Why is banksy making his art more valuable to the elite buyers of his work that he supposively dispises? And doing so for the biggest auction house in the world which he also supposively dispises? When this Dismal lite stunt occurred in Sotheby's sale room. The publicity and statement which was said to be quoting Banksy was that he built a shredder into a picture frame which housed one of his girl with balloon canvas on the basis that if it was ever sold at auction it would be destroyed.
When it was half shredded after the hammer came down. It was on that fact, that Banksy had destroyed a painting he created years earlier without the knowledge of the sale room or seller. Big rebel anarchist Banksy destroys art live on air etc etc. That is what got Banksy all of the column inches.
So well done to his PR team for promoting that lie in the media for publicity.
If they told the truth and said Banksy made some gimmick which when the hammer went down half shredded a painting and it's an actual art piece. People would have said, oooh how clever and that's all.
The hole in the back of the painting which shows the title probably also served as a way for someone to stick their hand in and connect a fully charged battery just before the sale, maybe during the viewing etc.
If also as stated this is a very old artwork, then why did the PR say that Pest Control has issued a certificate for this artwork after the auction ended. It's still the same artwork so the original certificate with a reference or serial number would serve it's purpose anyway.
The owner person who put it in the sale if not connected to Banksy or knowing about the stunt could easily have had the time to examine the frame and had the back taken off to see what was inside after seeing the long slot in the underneath part of the frame where the shredded part came out.
The new buyer said they wanted to keep it and Pest Control said they will issue a certificate.
That's if there was a new authentic buyer, not someone working for Banksy with people shill bidding the price up.
It's marketing and hype. Banksy is not anti Sotheby's type big auction rooms selling art to private collectors who horde it away in vaults or private as investments. Banksy is very much part of that circus.
In the words of Banksy.
"I can't believe you morons buy" (into) "this shit."

Future value comments were directed towards other comments in this thread of creating value through destruction.
I sure hope that wasn't banksys plan. I mean it's contradictory to the whole work and concept then making it a huge fail.
Or... I mean banksy and his relation with the top artworld is already contradictory to his original position so who knows really...

That would have been a great art mystery and worthy of high praise.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by caruso on Oct 17, 2018 10:35:39 GMT 1, And for my 888th post, I'd like to add to that:
This will be remembered in the history of art. The controversy will disappear to leave only the memory of the sheer audacity and brilliance of the move.
If Banksy was ever uncertain (please don't burn me at the stake for this) whether he'd remain a name taught in Art History in a 100 years, that move alone undoubtedly grants him that status.
Did I mention this is my 888th post? A very lucky digit in Asia, where rich drivers often purchase plates with an 8. Some guy from HK even blew over 2 mil a couple of years back to get the number 28, which apparently means something like easy prosperity.
And on this note I feel lucky and so I will not post anything until Shepard sends me the holy link to purchase Libertรฉ. As if Libertรฉ could be bought.
10 4. And 8 of course.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Deleted on Oct 17, 2018 10:51:15 GMT 1, For those aruging this is some conceptual genius of destorys to create more valuable artwork. Why is banksy making his art more valuable to the elite buyers of his work that he supposively dispises? And doing so for the biggest auction house in the world which he also supposively dispises? Banksy doesn't have control over what people are prepared to pay for his artworks. To blame Banksy for his high art prices is daft. Murakami (rather refreshingly) has stated that he thinks his art is overly valued at auction.

Not to be rude but the foolish thought is that banksy has no impact on his prices.
Why does he have pest control? Why does he not release anymore work? Why does he only sell to VIPs privately?
All contradictory to what made banksy banksy. Banksy could have a direct impact on his prices of he wanted.

All true.
But to ignore the reason for the prices saying it's all the buyers perogative is incorrect.

Yup you are right. But there's one question and one answer. Who controls supply and this directly controlling demand....

I'd enjoy a good form, checking history, asking for more photos, then updating the register! And if you find something dodgy calling in the fuzz.

Doubt it. Why spend any time on PC???
What's with banksys obsession on authenticating, and knowing Everytime a work changes hands. It bizarre.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Deleted on Oct 17, 2018 14:12:00 GMT 1, Maybe he feels that producing more prints would be playing the art game more than doing as little as possible, and concentrating on bigger, more interesting stunts and events... Plus, would he (or PC) want to spend even more time and effort on authentication and name change applications, and all that boring stuff. Doubt it. Why spend any time on PC??? What's with banksys obsession on authenticating, and knowing Everytime a work changes hands. It bizarre.
I know ive asked this before but did Banksy take a sh!t in your shoe or summit ?

What's with banksys obsession on authenticating, and knowing Everytime a work changes hands. It bizarre. PC is a useful service for people who like Banksy artwork and want to buy or people who bought and now want to sell. It gives peace of mind to sellers and buyers as prices have got steeper to ensure someone is not buying a WCP or Radar Rat record sleeve thinking they are buying a real Banksy. It was not needed when you could buy Banksy prints for ยฃ35-ยฃ100 but as soon as the fakes started for serious money then it became an issue and is helpful for those who need it.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by tuftynuts on Oct 17, 2018 16:14:30 GMT 1, Whatever you think about the Banksy Sotheby's auction stunt, it's sometimes worth drawing breath for a moment to realise that we're in the midst of a piece of of art history. And that is really exciting.
Will Gompterz - that BBC bloke with the baldy bonce - says this about Love Is In The Bin: "It will come to be seen as one of the most significant artworks of the early 21st Century."
He's worth a read: www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-45818204.
