Banksy Monkey (Devolved) Parliament sells for £9.9Million, by Deleted on Sept 16, 2019 8:41:14 GMT 1, Changes to the lighting were mentioned by hnkpnk as well in this post from the thread titled Monkey Parliament back in Bristol*. The artwork had by this point also been renamed Devolved Parliament. Not only are the lights off, the pendant lamps were actually painted out. These were probably seen as leading the viewer's eye away from the main focal point. The Commons Chamber, Palace of WestminsterMonkey Parliament, Bristol Museum, 2009Devolved Parliament, Bristol Museum, 2019__________ A separate aspect has yet to be discussed. I'm unclear about whether it represents a conscious and deliberate decision by Ban ksy, or if it was done without full consideration to the layout of the Commons Chamber. Besides the floor of the chamber which features Members of Parliament, the Visitors' Gallery — an area reserved for members of the public — is also occupied by apes. Devolved Parliament (detail of Visitors' Gallery), Bristol Museum, 2019According to Sotheby’s, it’s not a 2019 work. Their website states its dated 09, and was bought by the current owner in 2011. Incidentally, they also seem to indicate that it was exhibited as part of the Banksy vrs Bristol Museum show in 09. “PROVENANCE The Artist Acquired from the above by the present owner in 2011 EXHIBITED Bristol, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Banksy versus Bristol Museum, June - August, 2009 Bristol, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Banksy’s Devolved Parliament, March - September 2019” I just did send an email to the Bristol Museum how this is possible. Strange right? Are there maybe two paintings?

Not necessarily. If there are indeed two images, it could be that the painting had alterations made by the artist between it being displayed as part of the Banksy vrs Bristol museum show and now.

Probably Chinese numbers too - they knock out anything for a few hundred quick.
Which gives me an idea........

If that’s your attempt at humour then I’m guessing you’re the uninvited guest that stays until the end. It’s a valid question. If I was the painter commissioned to paint this it’d be a real buzz to see the impact this image has.

As to your specifics, most have had studio assistants. So if you were to research your valid question, I see a history of studio assistants doing the work in many cases since the 60s. So you have 50-55 years of info to gather, likely best presented in graph / chart form.

I think, for example if someone painted all the apes, they are like a line chef. Not even a sous chef. They have a task and nothing more. Being part of the process is exciting and maybe gets their foot in the door elsewhere. So yes, an artist, doing piecework.

Well, actually Michelangelo and DaVinci, etc etc used studio assistants, so a little bit further back than “50-55 years”
Doesn’t mean the studio assistants aren’t artists

I’ll get the thesaurus out next time if it pleases you. Would ‘actual’ artist have suited you? I’ll look up pedantic too. 👍🏼
Either way the painter must be proud.

If you were the man that painted this canvas, how would you be feeling about the recognition this piece gets?

Slowly and try not to be too clever about it because I can assure you it’s not a loaded question. I’ll put it another way for you. If you were the man that painted this canvas, how would you be feeling about the recognition this piece gets? Probably pretty good. Assuming this was painted by another person besides Banksy, then lets assume Banksy is a decent enough guy to actually pay them, and assuming that he could of paid him reasonably well, then perhaps in 2009 this other painter could have very well made enough money of this alone to put a deposit down for a house, thats pretty cool. Perhaps Banksy even tipped him a small stencilled canvas or even a couple of prints, maybe even a nice little quick biro rat drawing.
Maybe Banksy will even tip him a tiny bit from the ARR, i think thats like 4 percent isint it, lets assume this hits £2 million, thats £80,000 in ARR, if banksy tipped the guy again 10 percent of that, thats a conservatory on the back of the house Banksy has already helped pay for. Lets assume it was a man who painted it, pretty sure the wife will be happy with a new conservatory and maybe a nice meal on date night.
A happy wife, is a happy life.
