The timing of placing this in auction is impeccable, at no time in the last 10 years would this of achieved anywhere near that price! The owner has had his/her payday and the Banksy steamtrain continues.

Paintings usually only get this much attention when they have broken a record for price for all paintings and not just for the artist.
Banksy is constantly using different media to produce art. Performance, film, exhibitions, attractions, stunts, paintings, street Art etc. He never seems to rest. He has a bigger and more varied body of work than most artists. For now this painting is the one everyone is looking at. A year on the shredded girl with balloon is still being talked about and this one will be the same.

It's lower than the record for a Damien Hirst and would anyone argue Banksy has had less impact on the art world than Hirst? I'd say they're equal. Can anyone even name the highest-selling Hirst without looking it up? I couldn't. If I had ยฃ10 million to spend on a piece of art I can't think what I'd choose over this.
It's silly money, sure, but pretty much everything discussed on this forum is sold for silly money, to lesser degrees. Is a small off-cut from a Kaws print 'worth' thousands of pounds? To a lot of people it's a piece of scrap paper. To those that want it, it's worth it. Is a wooden postcard worth ยฃ50? Not really, unless you want it. ยฃ10 million for the only one of these in existence (as far as I know) is just a different kind of silly money.

Also, if i remember rightly, it had to sell for ยฃ50 million or it would devalue some other pieces of his that were about to come to auction.

The rest of the show was massively impressive, with pharmacy, his university work, the butterfly room, literally everything he ever did - simply an incredible show. But the way the skull was displayed with lights everywhere made it look really tacky and something that wouldn't of looked out of place in poundland with the other halloween shit.
Fun fact about that show, a friend of mine was accused by security for trying to steal some of the artwork, when trying to leave the butterfly room, one of the actual butterflies was perched on her handbag, she hadnt noticed and security tried to claim she was attempting to steal a piece of hirsts artwork. She simply brushed it away and that was that.

Totally agree. I was a bit sniffy about him before that show - thought he was just โthe spot guyโ - but seeing the timeline of his work I could see the themes and progression. Came away liking him a lot more. And the skull was the least interesting part.
Not keen on his most recent work, but respect him more as an artist for seeing that show.

Most artists get to a stage in their career when they "Farm out" work and bring in assistants, and it's pretty obvious to all that Banksy has had assistance from the very early days, so how come none of these myriad of assistants have come forward to spill their guts to the press for a few quid?! Simple, when you're employed by an artist, especially one as high profile as this you will sign an airtight N.D.A. as part of your employment contract. Most artists employed in this manner would not risk their future career or sales for the sake of some attention, none would be that naive and/or stupid.
So therefore, if any "Artists" have insinuated that they're responsible for painting this piece it's pretty much a safe bet that they're lying as a pathetic attempt at an oxygen grab.

Photographers tend to be more interested in the composition than the correctness in details like left and right handed artists and this is most likely a pose picture than an action pic of any actual painting done.
