Banksy Welcome Mat, by kuni on Mar 1, 2021 20:21:15 GMT 1, although I love the mat I’ve got I feel they have lost something compared to earlier releases. Instead of being an artwork it seems to have become a money making exercise and all the changes have been done to speed up the process and make more money. Not sewing on the tags less stitches and time taken to sew the letters on using newer life jackets rather than sorting through for the faded weathered ones making them smaller so packing them into the boxes is easier all these little changes add up and when seen side by side the newer version doesn’t have the same impact I think it's a strong piece regardless but i prefer the first as well - there's a certain rawness to it, the dirty letters and less manufactured look that gives the mat character and context. Almost like the first batch are genuine life vests that washed up on the shore while later batches are new jackets that were disassembled specifically to make the mat.

Also mentioned the waiting list page would be back up.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by mikegood on Mar 2, 2021 3:15:40 GMT 1, Work colleague brought his first batch welcome mat to work today to compare with mine from the latest release. It’s quite surprising how much difference there is the first batch is bigger and has a greater amount of stitches and the tightness of the lettering is noticeable. Also the colours are different well mines brighter which I prefer. Thought I’d share for people who like seeing the subtle differences Mine is second batch, and seems to be just as bright. It appears to be random. My favorite, and most moving part of the mat I have is the sand on the letters. It really sends me into deep thought when I think about what could have transpired with this vest. Hoping it had a happy ending for whoever wore it. I’m curious if others have traces of sand on them. Your mat lettering has silver at the tail, which is interesting ... I don't think I've seen many like that.
Re: the sand on the letters — After looking at mine, it almost looks like it was brushed on after the fact. I say that because #1. some of that dirt appears to be on my mat, as well. And #2. some of that stitching on the letters have the "mud," as well.

Yeah, I haven’t seen any others with the white/silver tail. Interesting observation of the sand on your mat. I wonder if that’s the case and if so why.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Lord Lucas Roham on Mar 2, 2021 8:45:17 GMT 1, I have seen a few of these pass through by hands and they are all different. I have seen some bright, some dull, some tightly stitched and others fairly loosely stitched. Batch makes no difference.
The last one that I bought is the best by far and that's the one on my wall. Very bright and tightly stitched with a long tail.
It's a sad day if that these have now stopped and been taken off the site. 2500 is a good run and has raised a good sum for a fantastic cause.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Gentle Mental on Mar 2, 2021 9:51:25 GMT 1, I think... the more being release the more valuable the first batch will be. The less valuable the rest will be (flip price). Supply demand etc etc whatever. It’s just how the market works.
I think it will be a sad day when flippers add sand and wear and tear to their recently brought mat to get more flip value. Much like crippling a child to get more money from begging.
The fact that these mats exist is sad enough. Keep the “desirability” factors to ourselves. Feels weird waxing lyrical about sand and stains on one’s mat. And inadvertently generating a new ) and unhealthy) measure of value.
These mats exist because of a real human tragedy. They are all equally heartbreakingly poignant.
Maybe- be glad if yours are new and stain free. It could mean things are improving. There are less used jackets. Less refugees. And sufferings.
Those who have one would know - it is the most powerful artwork in their collection. I don’t think there are pieces that moved me more.
Buy it. Love it. Whatever the condition; stitch etc.

Whatever the condition; stitch etc. It's not just the first batch that has 'dirty' lettering. I have couple numbered over 1000 and they are exactly the same as the first batch except for the label being loose and not sewed in. To me, they are all the same, even the last batch - symbolism. The fact they were a major part of GDP is also great in my opinion.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Gentle Mental on Mar 2, 2021 10:44:48 GMT 1, Sorry to have offended.
Crux of my point
Don’t worry about value. Don’t worry about getting a better one with sand or more stitches.
The concept is the art. It’s not the Mat.
Never meant to piss anyone off.
I just worded it after a large dose of yummy medication.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by phischa on Mar 2, 2021 10:56:00 GMT 1, They really should hire a quality assurance manager. It's annoying to pay 500 Euro of hard earned money for a poorly stitched mat. It's not rocket science, right?
In addition, it'd be a shame if they'd apply dirt manually as it clearly would devalue the piece due to the lack of authenticity. Knowing someone might have drown in this very jacked which has been used for my welcome mat is heartbreaking and as the welcome mat is a brilliant conversation starter at dinner parties, it wouldn't feel right to tell my guests the background story, knowing the dirt is fake. It just would't feel right.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by tab1 on Mar 2, 2021 12:21:49 GMT 1, I think we'll look back and wonder how these were so cheap. I'll look back and kick myself for refusing to buy on secondary but I'd rather not feed the flip market, especially on a fundraiser piece
That is what many said in the early days of banksy prints when they cost a few hundred extra on eBay 👀😮
