Possibly being pedantic here but can the first 500 really be considered as a โfirst editionโ? The edition is estimated to be around 4000 but that figure is also comprised of the first 500 produced and, although distinguishable by the stitched label, I struggle with viewing them as an โeditionโ. Perhaps thatโs just me. My own WM falls outside of the first 500 but I donโt suggest this out of self-interest but because Iโm curious as to how others view these. For one reason or another, they certainly seem more desirable.

I have both editions and there is 0 difference outside of one having a hanging tag. Who cares. Probably easier to just sew them on the back. Maybe some were tearing off and they wanted them more secure. Anyone deciding to buy one, there is 0 difference. I think you'd be crazy to pay a premium for one with a hanging tag haha |

Once the GDP site went up, the only item that included a link to buy was the Welcome Mat and as you say, you were directed to the Love Welcomes site to purchase direct.
A few other things.
A pre-order email did also go out from LW that day but nothing from GDP (at least to the general public...) and referred to them as the "first run".
A few days later, a confirmation email from LW referred to them as the "first batch of mats to be created."
Lastly, mats with the label stiched on the back didn't stop at 500. I bought a second one with the label on the back a few months after release and it is slightly above that number, but I'm not sure what the cut-off point was.
My guess is it just became much less time consuming to attach them with one stich vs the many required to attached it to the back.
My personal preference? Like the Box Sets I prefer the first batch(es), but others may find later batches more asthetically pleasing.
