Prints in Tubes, by nikono on Nov 4, 2006 20:21:34 GMT 1, This doesn't appear to be a problem for most people, but can someone give advice on removing a print from a tube without damaging it? And then how to properly flatten it out?

Prints in Tubes, by foundation on Nov 4, 2006 20:46:14 GMT 1, If the print is rolled tight into a tube, first of all make sure your hands are clean before you start man handling prints, but get your hand into the tube onto the inside corner / bottom / exposed edge of the printand try to wind it in upon itself ( ie against the spiral of the print) this should start to reduce the inside diameter of the rolled print and allow you to start unwinding the print upwards and outwards from the centre of the tube, the closer to the mouth of the tube the print gets, the easier is will be to wind in upon itself. Once out of the tube, the best plan it to leave the print standing on its end, still rolled for a few weeks, this will let the fibres naturally straighten and unroll, once it has loosened off over a few weeks, you will be able to flatten it, either within a frame or between 2 pieces of flat stuff ( plywood sheets etc) remembering to protect the print as much as it possible, good luck, and hope this made sense.

Prints in Tubes, by KaL976 on Nov 4, 2006 21:03:18 GMT 1, I'd go further - our hands are never truly 'clean' so I always wear surgical gloves when handling artwork/framing, etc [box of 100 is ยฃ5 or so]
- what Foundation said, then
Lay them between sheets of acid-free paper [in a portfolio preferably] until you're ready to frame.

Prints in Tubes, by gm on Nov 4, 2006 22:12:44 GMT 1, Getting the prints out of the tubes: I usually open one end and shake it over something soft, like a duvet, til the print comes out.
Flattening: plenty of acid-free tissue over the front and back of the print then whack it into a clip frame for a week or so.
Storing: it's the A1 folder and plastic wallets combo but, again, with plenty of acid-free tissue on both sides of the print.

surgical gloves? bit much isn't it, bet they don't wear surgical gloves at POW or store the prints in acid-free whatchamacallits.

Yeah, they do! I have only bin to POW once and Steph had gloves on to handle the prints ;D If my hand moved towards a print, as if I were to touch it, I would get a stern look
;D

Prints in Tubes, by trowel on Nov 10, 2006 10:05:34 GMT 1, I always find it odd when auctions go up on eBay proudly declaring that their print hasn't been out of its tube since they bought it, often a year or more ago.
I can't imagine your bog standard cardboard tube to be acid-free? When putting a print in a tube would many people put the acid-free paper behind the print before rolling, rather than over the front of the print - which to most would seem the most logical way to protect the print, but leaves contact against the tube?

Prints in Tubes, by howies on Feb 3, 2009 6:02:02 GMT 1, He was cutting up the tube so he could have little storage compartments for stationary etc. the worst thing is out of the ten tubes he could of picked from, that was the only one with a print in it as I ran out of portfolio sleeves and was too lazy to get some organised ..

Prints in Tubes, by manty on Feb 3, 2009 6:07:39 GMT 1, I shouldnt laugh, but it is quite funny, though I am sure not to you
Its a true original now though eh, and he did cut it in the right place, would look cool as a diptych.
And honestly the real reason for getting porints out of the tube, is to get them on the wall, though I am sure you all know that eh :-)
Good luck with the replacement, i'm sure handmade posters will sort you out, they seem like a cool set up
