Prints in Tubes, by bigbaddom on Apr 18, 2012 14:38:08 GMT 1, Is there a reason against storing prints in tubes? It seems to me they are kept quite safe in there, but I saw some adverts saying things like, always stored flat etc etc.
Thanks!

Prints in Tubes, by brendan1985 on Apr 18, 2012 14:55:23 GMT 1, I am having a large print framed currently on 400gsm paper that would have been rolled for no longer than a week while in transit and it is no costing me $150 to get archivaly flattened out to avoid any Kinks/ warping when its held in the frame. This is a first for me, But still flat is always better.

Prints in Tubes, by maadbeats on Apr 18, 2012 14:59:22 GMT 1, depending on the print paint etc some can last in a tube for up to 6months- 1 year. It is unadvisable to test this. best bet is to buy some peg board or some other similar smooth heavy board lay your prints in there and slide it under you bed

Prints in Tubes, by jusdeep on Apr 18, 2012 15:06:21 GMT 1, Waves or ripples in the print could occur if left in a tube for a long period -paper has a memory. The print can be rolled too tightly, the wrong way along the grain or the gsm is a heavier stock and can be more prone to damage if rolled too tightly. Generally paper over 300gsm should be sent in a wider diameter tube. I get all my prints out and store flat as soon as they arrive. Not only does this save expensive flattening processes, but readies the print for framing. Also lets me examine the print to check if there are any noticeable problems until leaving it too late. The majority of tubes used are also not archival and if not wrapped correctly can damage the print over time. Always better to take out (carefully), let relax and then store flat whenever possible.

Prints in Tubes, by jusdeep on Jun 29, 2012 15:55:30 GMT 1, Follow the one I posted. Really is the best wayโฆ No question! Expressobeans method is flawed in so many ways.
It makes sense not to let the print touch the internal edges of the tube just in case the tube gets squashed and you'll be left with dinks all along the length of your print.
Roll the print (lining with acid free paper), making a lesser diameter to the tube and fasten. Use longer lengths of packing or brown paper (at least 2 inches longer), which will hold the print in place and stop it moving. I also occasionally use a small piece of bubble to stop side movement. Then tape both ends along the length then round the end caps.
Only once failed getting a print to worldwide destinations and that was due to customs undoing my packing process.

Prints in Tubes, by searchandrescue on Aug 8, 2012 23:23:02 GMT 1, Crayford Tubes are good, I use them for light commercial use, sub 200 pcs. Can do customs etc, once your set up, sure you can organise a discount?

Prints in Tubes, by Deleted on Jan 15, 2013 22:25:39 GMT 1, Not tried it myself but depending on how thick you need the tube to be I'd be tempted to use a plastic drain pipe and cut it down to size like Mau Mau prints get shipped in.
Other than that I think there's an arts supply shop in Brum that sells tubes ( I think ) down by the law courts, can't remember the name though sorry.

Prints in Tubes, by sohohoho on Jan 15, 2013 23:00:10 GMT 1, For UK, I highly recommend Essex Tubes: www.essextubes.com/postal-tubes.html They will quote you for whatever dimensions you want: info@essextubes.com For prints, 3mm wall is perfect. For the diameter, either 101.6mm (4") or 127mm (5") then whatever length you want.

I looked in staples but they only had really thin ones which would easily get knocked. + they are crazy with their pricing!

Prints in Tubes, by brian on Jan 18, 2013 14:50:06 GMT 1, I've picked up tubes for free from my framer in the past as she doesn't have the storage space to keep too many.
Maybe worth asking whoever does your framing for you? You never know.
