Prints in Tubes, by waXology on Dec 22, 2013 13:51:53 GMT 1, Had a search but couldn't find a thread on this specifically.
So I live on London but will eventually be moving back to Australia. 6 months to a year from now. Who knows. I have quite a number of prints I've bought recently that I was just going to keep stored in tubes until i move home. Though given this is not good for them I'm wondering if I should just send them to mrframeman and deal with shipping them back to aus one day.
Questions are. Should I frame? Has anyone shipped framed are internationally? If so who did you use? Value wise none of the prints are over ยฃ1000.
Ive considered an art portfolio, but when it comes time to move id be reluctant to send that back as it would be so fragile.
Thoughts?
thanks in advance

Tube ... Many a print lived their whole lives there... Frame ( shipping glass .. Not the the faint hearted) Folio .. Generally most folks have them...a1 (a0 if you're talking mic jd , etc)
I'd opt for folio , crate , ship , inc insurance.
Nex care to comment ..?

Prints in Tubes, by johnnyh on Dec 22, 2013 14:18:36 GMT 1, You might want to drop me a pm. Have shipped stuff all over the world. Also moved my collection a number of times. Shipping frames is not a problem. However what you need to look at first is what your shipping. Will you be shipping boxes or will you need a container. It costs so that's the big issue. So unless you have to do not ship framed. Ship a box full of tubes...ok But best way is fly with a decent airline. Put them in a folder. Tape the zips to protect from water. Then get the folder wrapped in plastic at the airport. Put it in luggage on your flight. It goes free, it's easy and you pick up at other end. Always use a direct flight. I ship/move lots of art this way both prints in a folder and boxed canvasses to save on shipping costs. But if you have a big move and need a container which we do when we move country then shipper shipping is great but still for prints use the folder as your cost is Volume and weight Pm me if u want with any questions u have as have been through most of it a few times

Prints in Tubes, by Deleted on Dec 24, 2013 8:00:08 GMT 1, I would go for tube in luggages if you have lot of luggages or extra-kg !
As asked above, are you moving thing using a sea container, air container or air palettes ??
Just beware if you go for sea container as the container may get wet and there is a lot of humidity in the container

Prints in Tubes, by student42 on Dec 24, 2013 20:57:43 GMT 1, If you are shipping multiple prints, shipping them flat is safe and cost effective if you do it right. Tubes can get damaged easily and long term storage in tubes can make prints a challenge to flatten.
Shipping framed would greatly increase shipping costs and now you have to worry about damage to the frame, glass, & print. Just a thought, but you could cut 2 pieces of 1/2" smooth faced plywood a bit larger than your largest print. Place a protective layer on the wood (acid free glassine or tissue + craft paper works well) and stack the prints with a protective layer between each print/layer of prints. You can put multiple smaller prints on a larger one to keep an even stack, but make sure you devise a way to keep them separate. Once all the prints have been stacked, secure the prints to the board by wrapping the prints and the board in saran wrap. Place a thin sheet of foam (if you think it is needed) on top of the wrapped stack and place the other board on top of it all and wrap the whole thing with plastic wrap again. Next you can box the whole thing or wrap it cardboard or what ever for shipping. All of you artwork secured between two 1/2" boards should be pretty safe and nearly as cheap to ship as a box full of tubes.
As for checking you art with an airline, on top of lost luggage (which I have experienced first hand) I leave you with this

Prints in Tubes, by Deleted on Jan 30, 2014 14:42:31 GMT 1, Does anyone have an idea of where I can economically purchase large size (think Faile) shipping tubes? I need one for a large format print that is roughly 38 or 40 inches wide. I now regret throwing away that monstrous Faile tube.
Thanks

Prints in Tubes, by Deleted on Jan 30, 2014 15:28:41 GMT 1, Visited the local framers, here in the suburbs they tend to frame the mundane so asking for a very large tube got blank look and told to call a movers...
I heard about the PVC but they are pretty heavy when you get to such a large size. Carpet roll sound interesting. that could do the trick.
edit:
I checked online but from what I saw you need to buy in bulk, and it sounds silly to ship me a shipping tube. What would they ship it in? Another tube?? lol

Nothing wrong with blowing your own trumpet... But that's another story and involves a surgical procedure removing ribs.

Prints in Tubes, by lvanhoe on Jul 30, 2014 3:35:40 GMT 1, So there's that magic moment - your print arrives in a tube, you carefully unpack it and open the tube. Now, how am I to handle the print without risking it getting damaged in one way or another..do I wear gloves? Are there other techniques someone with absolutely zero knowledge about this stuff can use to minimize the risk of damaging something valuable?
I also recon the print needs to be straightned before it can be put into storage. What do you use as weight to make that happen? I've seen pics on here of people using normal drinking glasses but that seems a bit..off, so any help here is also greatly appreciated.
BTW: After thinking of all this stuff AFTER buying quite a few prints from galleries and people here I'm so absolutely thankfull for the fact that my recently purchased Banksy (which I'll be picking up tomorrow) is already framed

Prints in Tubes, by Street Art Fan on Jul 30, 2014 5:53:58 GMT 1, Good questions, Ivanhoe. Not sure why, but it unnerves me to see rare and expensive prints being held down with drinking glasses. I know that art supply shops sell holders just for this purpose, but I've just been too lazy to actually make the trip to buy a set.

What I do is just bring it to the framers straight from the mail and let them deal with it; that said, haven't bought much secondary market so not as many flattening problems.

Prints in Tubes, by Mark Perronet on Jul 30, 2014 10:55:14 GMT 1, agree with wiz..clean hands, hold by the edges, if borderless then is a little tricky not to get marks with some matt inks but if there is a white border no problem. put tissue over it and put under a board of some sort, not card wont be heavy enough, i put mine under my cutting mat. Leave until done. Then put under the bed and never look at again.
