Is ir worth buying KAWS figurines?, by Smokeidaeye on Jun 8, 2020 20:24:16 GMT 1, All of the recent ones have been open editions which means he can always offer more which drives down the price. Personally I'd only buy them if you like to display them, not if you think you are going to get rich off of them.

Think about that! kaws knows he has no real legacy so is buying all the great artists for his collection, with your money 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️

Is ir worth buying KAWS figurines?, by LJCal on Jun 8, 2020 22:47:11 GMT 1, KAWs is one of the most hyped low quality artists going. His work will be worthless in 10 years time in my view. The only urban artists who will be relevant in the long term (IMO) is Banksy and maybe Invader.

It’s all about repetition. Can’t find any meaning in his work. I just see advertising. Even his shows don’t seem to me to project any personality. I don’t dislike his work as such but I don’t get the constant fawning as if it’s groundbreaking. Willing to be educated as to his appeal.

Is ir worth buying KAWS figurines?, by Hairbland on Jun 8, 2020 23:29:19 GMT 1, Interesting and seemingly astute opinions from noobs who have joined the forum in the last 6-7 months. Meanwhile KAWS one of the only street artists I know of since I joined with a growing career and actual museum shows.
Vinyl degrades (crumbling, discoloration) over time. I got rid of most of mine as not a great long term investment. Also less dusting.
For me he is hit or miss, not fond of his too little too late launch Wednesday. Hate his Snoopy Dolphin etc prints.
When I go to a show of his - gallery, outdoors, museum - I see people of all ages and colors enjoying the art and themselves.

I don’t dislike his work as such but I don’t get the constant fawning as if it’s groundbreaking. Willing to be educated as to his appeal. TBH I’m not his biggest fan but I do see some artistic merit in what he does. I’ve sold all but one his pieces that i owned as there’s been a lot of manipulation of his market, which is common it’s just been done in a clumsy way which turns me off. I think you need to look at his body of work and the impact his street pieces have had in certain cities and the way he’s taken an almost redundant technique and reinvented it. I lived in Central London years back when a lot of his works were up around the City and they had quite an impact. I think if you look at certain works in isolation they can be a bit under whelming (and a lot of people won’t get them) but I think overall he has a chance of being recognised as a serious artist (possibly).

Is ir worth buying KAWS figurines?, by Happy Shopper on Jun 8, 2020 23:57:06 GMT 1, Do you collect KAWS figurines? Or it’s better to collect prints?
Buy the classic “original fake” kaws figures. New open editions could be produced forever (although some seem less likely to be remade than others) Prints are hugely over priced, IMO.

Is ir worth buying KAWS figurines?, by Winter on Jun 9, 2020 0:39:07 GMT 1, I’d say try and aim to buy low. Monitor the market for a while then look to sell at a price that will give you a profit. Make sure you pay tax on your profit.

Is ir worth buying KAWS figurines?, by Gentle Mental on Jun 9, 2020 0:47:07 GMT 1, Despite being open Ed. They still sell out out at launch. Or maybe Kaws keep some. Either way he knows if he keeps re releasing them they won’t be back. But he does need to re release them sometimes. Say for a museum show or something. Point is - I think he wants to keep the option open. But he won’t exploit it as it breaks trust and bad for business. So there is a good chance there might be no more in the future.
So yes maybe. But buy with eyes wide open and fingers tightly crossed!
Kaws will be up there with Banksy. His auction prices, global cultural influences, major museum shows and large scale installationS, cement his place in art history. Invader is a distant third.
