Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by monochrome on Jan 27, 2006 13:43:51 GMT 1, As a collector of his works and that of other artists, I beginning to feel the hype, sometime justified is getting too much. What do everyone else think about this?
I'm concerned that his star will only shine for a few more years, within the UK at least and there will be no international drive to reach other markets with his art.
I'm a collector and investor, and see POW as a dealer flooding the market with too many uncontrolled prints - how much cash have both POW and Banksy made from this now do we think? With each new print creating a minimum of £50k are they merely cashing and flooding the market and therefore leaving us all exposed holding worthless art in 2-3 years time?
Just a few thoughts running through my head...

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Honest Jon on Jan 27, 2006 14:03:42 GMT 1, I think that by people worring people on this chat room may affect the prices of the prints. They will still be sold out and collectable and people will still want his work. The older prints will be more sort after like rude copper and pulpfiction and its not just about whether he is popular, its weather you like his work or not, fair enough you get big cocks like Robbie Williams buying his work because Banksy's the man at the moment. They are still investments, your going to atleast double your money, I got Pulpfiction for £60 2 years back and its worth £££££ but I very much doubt id sell it, just because I think its a brilliant print. (unless I become really desperate, but id probably turn to prostitution first). So if your in it for the money then your going to have to take chances, but I belive the work will still retain value.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Daniel Silk on Jan 27, 2006 15:04:07 GMT 1, The number of people buying Banksy Prints over the last six months has grown massively, so the numbers that POW have been printing in each edition are just not enough for everyone to have a picture each, So the values just keeping rising. The edition sizes seem to be getting smaller, so POW must be happy about the high after market prices otherwise they would be printing in larger numbers to keep up with demand.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by dicko58 on Jan 28, 2006 17:00:14 GMT 1, Are peoples Banksy collections purley driven my CA$H? I couldn't give a dam if my Banksy prints increased by £1000 or dropped to only £100, I like them and thats that. The only time value comes in it for me is for insurance purposes. People need to take a long hard look at their collection and ask do I really like ot for what it is or do i like it because it looks like £ signs?

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by graff on Jan 28, 2006 18:03:04 GMT 1, I'd have to say yes his stuff is becoming over-hyped. To be honest I don't really like his prints that much. There is some question to how much of the work is produced by him. Normally he'll work on the original screens then they're all printed by someone else or by a machine and I think over produced too many times.
I've been graffin' for some years now, and thing that really stands out for me is his street work. A good original image is key, but also placement is really important, and this is what Banksy is the master of and by far the best of his work.
He'll always be king of the streets but I don't think the galleries.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by LoveRat on Jan 28, 2006 19:38:45 GMT 1, Yeah ,I agree with you all. I think more and more people are buying his prints to try and make some cash or because they think he's trendy. I don't think he is overhyped but maybe overexposed . There seems to be a lot of people buying prints to make a buck rather than because they like his work.As soon as a print sells out they start appearing on Ebay at inflated prices,I think some sellers have a deliberate policy of trying to drive up prices. Wether his work is worth £1 or £10000 ,I think he has produced some real iconic images. I started buying his work because I liked what he was saying not because of pound signs.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by banksofrobin on Jan 29, 2006 17:56:15 GMT 1, I do think Banksy and his art has changed, with steve being his manager and having joint interests in POW with Banksy aswell, I do think its all about the money now and not the work. What stunt can he pull off next to get publicity to sell even more prints and paintings to Robbie, Damien hurst or who ever. When he started out it was about making a statement and art now its all about the DOLLAR $$$ thats why he did america to make more of an impact on the BANKSY copyright market. I do hope he carries on but doesnt try to sell out so much.
Give other artists a go aswell POW and not just southern boyz LONDON OVER HYPED AND OVER RATED

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by rhodes_sine on Jan 30, 2006 16:32:28 GMT 1, I think there are a lot of people buying for the monetary value - fair play to them they will make money from reselling. I have two earlyish prints, Love is in the Air and HMV, and I bought them because I liked them first and foremost. I've looked at a lot of the ones since as I'm a fan but I've stopped so far because they don't appeal to me quite as much, but I'm quite sure lots of other people will disagree with me.
When you look at how much money he is making from the signed prints from POW - consider that the Jack and Jill run signed was 350 x £150 = £52,500 and sold out in about 4 days, it's hard not to conclude that the money is now a significant factor. But why shouldn't he make some money out of his art? Isn't he entitled to make a living?
I just hope he uses the cash for more raids like the one on the Palestinian wall which was completely inspired.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by spence on Jan 30, 2006 18:38:22 GMT 1, Couldn't care less about making money from his art.
Whats the point of putting art on your wall because it cost a 1000 quid with a known name (not going to mention any) but is basically crap.
My Bro bought me a print of Banksy's 2 years ago for christmas, having never heard of him. Wow i thought, thats different from the normal rubbish you get in ikea and can be seen in any 2.4 childrens home. Having then became interested in his story, i have now started collecting bits and bobs.
A 5 quid sticker looks great framed and anybody who comes round for the first time always seem to comment on them, sometimes pointing out the stickers before the prints.
My postman once commented on the 'neighbourhood watch' sticker stuck on my front door and couldn't believe he had not noticed the difference for over a year. It made us both laugh. Isn't that what it is all about ? When was the last time you went round somebodies house and commented on their art?
Price doesn't make art. As for over rated, Dunno, suddenly the Mona Lisa comes to mind and that thing is priceless . If he makes good money, SO WHAT, good luck to him. More fool those who spend big money for something just in case the price may go up, or to sayto people " that cost 30,000 quid".(No names mentioned Robbie)

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by ben on Feb 2, 2006 16:40:04 GMT 1, BRING ON THE PROFITEERS!!
The quicker the prints come off POW, the faster the value of my collection rises, and, as it's only a matter of time before the art they buy end up in the hands of collectors, it's win win.
I would also speculate that these profiteers will also be more imaginative about finding outlets to sell banksy's work, thus helping it reach new markets. The down side, I guess, is that you have to be quick to get something you want without paying a premium. And if you're only buying it cos you like it, well, the unsigned copies are usually around for longer.
Thoughts?

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Daniel Silk on Feb 2, 2006 17:24:19 GMT 1, Yep If you just like the picture, get an unsigned one for cheaper! I find it funny when people go on about others buying for money gain rather than buying what they like. Then in the next sentence they say about how they only want signed prints! Whats that all about?

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by gm on Feb 3, 2006 15:12:57 GMT 1, I buy them because I like them. Don't care if the monetary value rises to 10x what I paid for them, I can't see things getting so desperate that I'd ever need to sell them on for a profit.
I have absolutely no problem with Banksy making shitloads of money from sales. Good luck to him. He's still getting out and putting his pictures on the streets for everyone, for free, and I love his attitude as much as I love his artwork.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by mido on Feb 4, 2006 3:29:53 GMT 1, It must be difficult for POW.
let's be honest, if you were a business and you could sell out 350 prints of J&J in a few days and see £52 k into your bank account, then that is hard to stop. I didn't even like it much so didn't get it yet it's already on ebay with £420 bid on it. So who's the fool in that situation? me I guess!
basic principles of supply and demand.
the differnce seems to be that who now buys it? general collectors, dealers, speculators?

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by charliespeed on Feb 12, 2006 22:33:46 GMT 1, I dont care who buys them or what they do with them. I have didnt buy CND as I wasnt that keen on it. As it has been said by some of the members - I buy the pics I like. I am not too concerened about having a signed one as it is for me to enjoy on my wall - not to profit from.
With regards to being over hyped, we live in a society where the press will try and build everything up then knock it down. The true fans will always appreciate his work. Who gives a shit what anyone else thinks.

I reckon the prints will go up in value, but who knows in five years time they could be worthless or worth thousands.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Ågent ßacardi on Nov 17, 2006 20:36:30 GMT 1, Lots of factors. Mainly, prices are determined by demand and supply - basic law of economics. The recent appreciation of prices is primarily caused by increasing demand (due partly to W&P and the LA show) and a non-changing supply. If things happen in the future to somehow cause a drop in demand (e.g., perhaps another artist blows up big and everyone decides to spend their money on him/her, or if Banksy somehow pisses his fans off, and yes, if Banksy is indeed revealed to be none other than Des O'Connor ;D etc.), prices will plummet.
All things being equal however, human beings have a very short attention span in general. There is a set amount of dedicated die-hard fans, and the rest of the fanbase is filled by people drawn simply to the hype (e.g., lots of people in LA got into him after the LA show media controversy/hype factor). As time goes by, those people who are in it in part because of the hype will grow sick of it, and to them, Banksy will fade into obscurity faster than the Backstreet Boys, and demand (with prices) will go back to a baseline level (as determined by the unwavering die-hard hardcore fans). I would imagine that prices will drop as time goes by until a plateau is reached.
This ends the special edition of the Banksy Financial Outlook Report. Stay tuned for these messages from our sponsors. ;D
