Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Deleted on Apr 28, 2014 10:24:57 GMT 1, Grin Reaper is certainly starting to get more appreciation given the print is such high quality and slightly unusual for Banksy. Have seen a few trade in the 5 figure area now. So a grin reaper sold for ยฃ5,473 last night on auction from a starting price of $1
unframed perfect condition. To me that is a spot on price, I'm sure people will be along now to protect there investment and make up a reason why it sold so cheap. It wasn't cheap so don't go there.
People have just been paying far to much for his prints recently

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by philw on Jul 4, 2014 3:25:12 GMT 1, I don't really have a horse in this race as I recently sold off nearly my entire collection. Partly because I made a grip of money off a small about on cash out down years ago.
I feel like the way prices are going this is not sustainable. What do you think? Will the bubble burst? Have prints been essentially re-priced ?
I think both. Things will drop again, but never back levels of two years ago.

He cashed out. Sold his penny shares for pounds and is happy with the deal he did at the time, despite them now being worth a bit more.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jul 4, 2014 7:56:52 GMT 1, It's supply and demand.. Prices will increase for a few years yet in my opinion, he's seen as a good investment, people/investment funds buying art more thesedays instead of shares.
The last time prices stagnated was in 2008 when probably just the UK public were buying majority of his prints, now his work is sought after world wide especially America after the movie and New York month.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by gordonbennett on Jul 4, 2014 8:06:25 GMT 1, I have always been of the opinion that he is one of the most if not the most famous/recognisable name (Artist) of his generation, and because of that, and the role the (social)media plays, there will always be collectors of his work. Hence prices will reflect this and remain reasonably keen. Just my opinion of course, but feel there is a modicum of truth in my ramblings. What goes up always comes down eventually, however I am fairly certain that the bubble as it's being termed is unlikely to burst anytime soon, and if it does, will probably be more of a slow puncture.

Translation: I sold my Banksy's some time ago and made a nice profit. They've gone up quite a bit more since then and I wish I actually had held on. Can someone give me reassurances that the prices will soon crash so I can feel good about myself again.
You're welcome.

I am seeing other things I collect going mental at the moment too - vintage watches, toys etc.
Property is the same (commercial and resi) - lots of money being spent and made. Massive release of pent up demand IMO.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Deleted on Jul 4, 2014 11:08:23 GMT 1, this is a whole subject in itself, but very interesting
flat or negative interest rates do have an impact that most people dont actually realise is affecting them - its the " whats the point of having that money in the bank when I can buy THIS..." mentality. The flip side is those whose standard of living has been eroded by the disparity between income and inflation- - many continue their spending habits despite the redution of free cash, many increase their spending oddly enough in some kind of head in the sand reaction.
Those who own property, especially in the SE, are feeling flush - they all think they are investment gurus because they have "made" 200K in a 18 months on their house- of course this isnt realisable on the whole, but it does give a certain swagger to those involved.
We have a whole raft of BTL who are explioting the flat interest rates .

Have they continued to rise or have prices dropped?
Warhol editions only went high when the money men went round buying up as many warhols as they could and then controlled the market and the auction prices rumoured to be artificially.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Jul 5, 2014 2:36:16 GMT 1, Good posts and I think banksy is different as his prints have ceased, doesn't look like there will be more. I like Hirst prints, but he's released so many now that there are loads just sat in galleries unsold, so youd think his prices will go down.
It's supply and demand same as parla's elms prints, they are selling for 3k each these days as he doesn't release prints every year like everyone else..

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Deleted on Jul 5, 2014 13:40:16 GMT 1, banksy is a perpetual motion monkey, he is so damn great. if you look at the things he does, it's incredible. we can all just be glad we're around to see him doing his thing, and that he's still in it.
he also represents so much more to people than 'art' - he represents an entire culture. and he has evolved beautifully, unlike 99% of the other artists on here.
end of gush

Agree and Sydney (maybe Melbourne also) are defying bubbles, Chinese/foreign investment is keeping the bubble going. I feel pity for Aussie youngsters they will never be able to afford until their parents downsize an invest in their kids. When will it crash? It will slow down when the Asian investors stop buying but can't see a huge crash. We sold in Sydney, (took the money and run)..Now bought in QLD, transferred with work, amazing value up here and better lifestyle and now they reckon investors have moved up and buying here, well see...

I do find people at the moment buying for the sake of buying and not necessarily liking the image but as an investment like stock, but I do think by doing so you are degrading him and his work.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by James on Dec 8, 2014 22:30:35 GMT 1, I've been wondering for sometime now how long can the Banksy hype keep up these insane prices? I've often thought the unsigned prices would start to catch up with the signed and now they are starting to. At the moment you have more choices when buying a singed Banksy than unsigned. So obviously the market is dictated by how many buyers are out there and it seems there are no shortages for the lower end, but there must be a braking point. If you look at other artists like M C Escher who's signed prints can go for massive money (nearly all of his work) and Picasso who's work you can buy relatively cheap in comparison where dose this leave Banksy an artist who isn't dead and could do anything at any time? I'm not making an art comparison more of a market comparison. It seems the media grabs an artist every decade or so and hypes the living hell out of them. So do you think we're due another icon soon? Will this happen when the Banksy prices get to high? It's just what I've been thinking lately so should I sell some of my Banksy collection?

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Howard Johnson on Dec 8, 2014 22:46:20 GMT 1, In my opinion the Banksy market is pretty volatile. His allure has always been him anonymity (and amazing art), and there is no telling what may happen if he's eventually outed. It may increase prices in short term due to the media exposure, or the market could plummet in the wake of bad publicity. That being said, if he remains anonymous I think his work's value may exceed that of all other contemporary artists. When you look at the volume of work he's produced its incredible small when compared to Picasso, Warhol, or any other important historical artist.
