Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Manty on Apr 24, 2014 8:34:10 GMT 1, Some one told me, can't remember who, but they looked awfully important, that Grin Reaper is going to be the next print to hit the big time. massive he said. Apparently it has been nominated to go on ยฃ20 notes.
Apple have decided to go with it as their new Logo.
I have one of these by the way

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Trevorm on Apr 24, 2014 10:09:06 GMT 1, Prices for the high end stuff, canvas's etc. are continuing to climb at a rate that is probably relative to scarcity, hype and celebrity lolly and are now and probably were beyond the reach of the majority of people anyway.
Prints lumber along in the wake, so to speak, of the originals - but seem to be increasing in value and manty is spot on the money with the GR - I've just been offered a five figure sum for mine.
Also look out for future astronomic prices for 'damaged' S&S's. (I've got one of these too)

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Deleted on Apr 24, 2014 14:41:32 GMT 1, I thought the highest prices were achievd around 2008 for originals with some not being sold or pulled from auctions recently.
I can see in future a lot of ltd edition prints bought today being sold in small salerooms for a tenth of their retail or gallery prices.
I'm not sure ebay prices are a good way to judge values either.
I still don't get the reason people buy unsigned prints either.
The whole point of an artist signing a ltd edition is that their signature is a legal verification of the print being ltd.
โAn alternative explanation is that modern art is a bubble, people buy only because they expect to sell to othersโtake away this expectation and the art doesnโt sell.โ
marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2013/10/banksy-comments-on-the-nobel-prize.html
One things for certain, Banksy is a business and his dealers, galleries, promotions people would be on forums hyping up his art and also social media and other places sending out emails to all and sundry in the media to keep the money flowing.

Jeez Ploppi why would he employ those people raise the prices of work that he gets little of when he could just knock out some more prints at market prices etc. he does some specials in the originals market etc but he could just do a big show and rake it in if just making some more money and setting prices was his aim.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Deleted on Apr 24, 2014 15:29:37 GMT 1, I agree but he does thrive on media attention.
It's what generates the interest and publicity so the like sof Angelina Pitt and others bought Banksy's whic generated more publicity.
High auction prices are good too even if he doesn't get a penny from those sales.
Would people buy the ltd editions if no one bought his originals for high prices at auctions?
On the other hand why on earth do people buy Brainwash editions?
I can understand Fairey because his prices are always affordable.
If he continues to make original art as opposed to stealing other peoples images. Fairey would be a good long term bet.

Your arguments points on Banksy just do not make sense he is quite rarely in the media better out than in yes but very quiet prior to that and very quiet since till couple of recent pieces but nothing released etc.
But the Brad Angelina stuff was not necessarily him more likely an auction house or an Americanablid type comment.
High auction prices are very good if he sells stuff at that price. Sure he does the odd piece or two but he is not exactly knocking them out to take advantage of the increase in prices.
He has only done 1 limited edition in recent years as far as I know so again not exactly knocking them out. His biggest sale was in NY at 60 a pop!!!
Brainwash fits your example but Banksy does not so again not sure of the logic there

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Unica on Apr 24, 2014 16:32:57 GMT 1, I just took a look at Banksy canvas prices back in 2008 and I certainly feel prices are higher now than then. In 2008 results I see plenty of edition canvases unsold with reserves of ยฃ25k. A girl with Balloon canvas sold at ยฃ45k, Heavy Weaponry ยฃ25k, Keep it Real Chimp ยฃ35k, unsold Lenin. I don't think you could buy any of these for those prices now, and the recent sale of Googly Eyes Rembrandt for ยฃ400k is an indication that Banksy prices are still rising.
I think print prices will rise in line but won't get the gains that an original handworked piece would, although that being said Nola and CYW prices seem to have no end in sight.

It could well be that Banksy has inadvertently created a monster that is beyond his control.
His canvas has always been since he became Banksy the Streets and walls etc.
He became known for that globally and I believe to stay true to his roots will always make a picture in the street somewhere on a wall etc.
That was great when his art was selling at prices which made it unprofitable to remove a wall and ship it across the world to sell.
It meant he did what he does best and the art stayed where he made it.
Then with all the media hype the big money men and hedge fund and other white shoe boys moved in and using agents etc pushed up auction prices and locate and buy off building owners his originals.
Now because of all that it looks like Banksy is a victim of his own success.

When all said and done street art wasn't meant to be stored for hundreds of years in museums.
I think the best investments are mass produced things that are sold cheap like Star Wars figures and other such things.

maybe he never planned for it to happen but it's clearly sumtin he overlooked
After all is it true he got the publicity after being invited to exhibit in an exhibition organised by Damien Hirst?
Is it true that some serious investors are involved with Hirst and promoting Banksy?
and is it being naive in this day and age to not expect people to make a fast buck and big profit?
Thats what all these flippers are into.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by motor on Apr 24, 2014 20:54:03 GMT 1, Jeezuz Jones Snr Interesting but I think you know the answers. Banksy bubble - who knows but IMO he prices are increasing and it is as simple as you have mentioned "supply and demand". He hasn't released anything for the public since 2010 but his popularity has definitely grown since then. Galleries buying up and pushing up the prices? Of course, it's always the case but since the supply has dried out it is easy to corner the market. This was/is mainly a Banksy forum so this "one way traffic" is expected here. Galleries, people, hedge funds are buying all the sh it up? Who cares - who wouldn't. Someone loves it someone just has enough money or best the both. And yes, he is the only one. Will there be a crash? If the supply will remain this tight - no. Was there a crash? Yes. 2008. You could call it a bubble but as you know it was all over the world. Year after that one could buy things half price. Now his market is very different and, as @ploppi is trying very hard to get his message to get across, it is very well managed/manipulated. But that has always been a case.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Deleted on Apr 25, 2014 15:37:37 GMT 1, Grin Reaper is certainly starting to get more appreciation given the print is such high quality and slightly unusual for Banksy. Have seen a few trade in the 5 figure area now. Well there's one on eBay for ยฃ9k or best offer. lovely image infact one of my favs but id say 9k is still expensive. Agreed, 9k too high for sure, great print and I've no doubt it'll get there in the not too distant future. Mr Sloane and urbanartgallery should be banned from ebay with their prices, not (I hope) that anyone would actually pay any attention to them.
