Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Shagga on Mar 20, 2021 9:37:00 GMT 1, I love reading old thread's and relate them to other discussions ongoing now. As Banksy keep rising, who is taking his place as the new kid on the block?
And is Banksy just "the perfect storm" or will it withstand the test of time?
Lovely read

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by tonys on Mar 20, 2021 9:56:06 GMT 1, What amazes me is how people treat Banksy rises in isolation forgetting that all art from the early 21st century has risen exponentially. Looking at a couple of Warhol’s that were around £10-20k at that time are now around £100k.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by mose on Mar 20, 2021 14:32:32 GMT 1, Was his post wrong? Not terribly so. It was a logical conclusion based on evidence present at the time. What it didn't foresee was the art-world shift to Instagram, the manipulation in the Banksy print market by large inventory holders in order to run up prices, the choking off of supply by Pest Control/Banksy inc., and the dramatic run-up in collectibles market over the last year (that has less to do with inherent value of collectibles and more to do with both crypto money and with general social malaise/a trend towards infantilism). When you hear hoofbeats, think horses not zebras. That is true the vast majority of the time. Occasionally, it is a zebra. Occasionally, you get how the Banksy market turned out. If you’re referring to the Choose Your Weapon post then yes, the post was massively wrong. It was stated categorically that they won’t be worth as much in ten years. Ten years on and they are worth at least ten times as much. I'm referring to the mocking tone that people now, with full knowledge of what transpired, are looking back at said post with. Reality is, Banksy shouldn't have happened like it has. No historical precedent. Many things lining up that either didn't exist at the time that post was made or have never come to play in the ways they have since. You never bet on history changing because 99.9% of the time you lose that bet. 99.9% of art becomes worthless and unsalable and always has.
For fun, let's go back and look at posts of people pumping stuff that within 10 years has become utterly worthless. That would provide some balance. Hell, if they will share them, we can survey for horror stories of people over-extending on credit cards chasing buy recommendations from people on this forum, and how it impacted their lives over the last decade.
By and large, the person telling you NOT to buy art is telling you true.

Whilst I agree with you about the tone being wrong and I don’t therefore wish to in turn mock you I suggest you study the growth of the art market since the 1950s when modern day collecting became an actual thing. The history of the artworld since early modern and ab ex into pop art and beyond right to Banksy has repeated the pattern I’m afraid . You are wrong to say it is a unique series of ducks lining up, it isn’t. From pollock to Warhol , from Mondrian to Banksy , pick any big name artist and their works were either mass available, unsold , unwanted and then suddenly and beyond exponentially exploded This isn’t the case for all artists of course but it is the case for all art movements , it’s uncannily similar in fact. Collectors , galleries , movements of art all conspire in the same way and driven for the same reasons since the 1960s collectors swooned around New York picking up works en masse and then watching the market explode I suggest reading some great books on the history of the art market

I've done a lot of that over the years, though I am always open for book recommendations.
Given your apparent experience with art history, I think you may agree that your reference to the 60's is incorrect, as prior to the 1973 Scull auction, there really wasn't a contemporary art market, at least not in any fashion we would recognize as a 'market'. Top artists living in cold water flats, selling works infrequently for $900 to a very small circle of collectors and such. Collectors in the 60's weren't buying for profit, because the concept of profit in contemporary art was largely without precedent. It was more in the traditional patronage model, that had been an art historical presence going back 100's of years, and of what can be called 'nouveau riche' latching on to the few cultural areas that were available to them. That's how a high school drop-out taxi cab owner, Robert Scull, could make himself culturally important in a world that very much looked down its nose at him.
Hell, prior to the 1990's and the Hirst-led YBA revolution, contemporary art wasn't popular culture fodder in the UK. Tate Modern was London's first public art gallery for contemporary/modern art, and that was 2000.
So, I do believe that some of your assertions are off-base. I believe it falls into the category of 'it exists now, so it always existed', which, with regard to contemporary art and its market, is most definitely not true.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Mar 20, 2021 23:07:52 GMT 1, Haha reading my posts back I said gradual rise in banksy's prices. It was gradual until covid!! Most markets have risen during covid. The Australian property is still surging. Here in Brisbane gone up 10% since covid and expecting to keep going, it's crazy!
I said in another thread I think banksy's will continue to rise this year and next year, as there is so much government money (stimulus) been thrown around and people have more savings as they cant travel. When normality returns you'd think prices would start to level off?

Time will tell if the artist/s is/are considered in the same pedigree as those which are now deemed to be established renegades in their time. Market fluctuations will occur. That’s the joy of collecting though, buy what you want to put on your walls. Serendipity.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by artdelight on May 17, 2021 20:24:05 GMT 1, Historically during inflation time prices of oil, gas, metals and other commodities had risen. Luxury watches like rolex and audemars piguet has already risen too. Now the value of rare coins and comic books has risen by about 20%, while baseball cards are up 15% to 40%, to name a few categories. Soon after crypto hype i guess Banksy value will rise another 60-80 percent in 2 years period. Because banksy is Picasso of 21st century you won’t find any better artist alive.

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Daniel Silk on May 18, 2021 1:09:47 GMT 1, Historically during inflation time prices of oil, gas, metals and other commodities had risen. I look forward to Daniel Silk resurfacing your post in ten years time to see how your ludicrous prediction has fared. Yeah, stick around for that 😉

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by Gentle Mental on May 18, 2021 2:01:16 GMT 1, The new variant from India has hit singapore and kids getting quite sick. Vaccinated folks are spreading it unknowingly a they have little or no symptoms. New clusters are popping every other day.
We aren’t sure how deadly this new one is yet.
But it’s spreading fast despite this being a fairly highly vaccinated population.
The country is going back to semi lock down now. As will Hong Kong Taiwan south east Asia.
New data shows Vaccines last only 6-8. Months and you’re back to being vulnerable.
This fuckkking sucks.

We only know based on continuous testing of the people that first received vaccines in non trial environments. Please don't share misinformation.
Yeah. You’re right. No concrete data yet. Like everything else. We are cutting real close.
Apparently booster jabs are urgent and a must now. Please get them soon as you can.
I sincerely hope my country is overreacting. And this is no big deal. It’s just so depressing to go back to lock down when things were starting to look up. You can hear the entire city going WTF?!?!?

Banksy Prices Up or Down?, by naughtyshorty on May 18, 2021 15:05:00 GMT 1, I must say, I did quite enjoy rereading this one 😀
I love easy questions! Without a doubt Banksy brought worldwide attention to a flourishing scene, but 3-8kusd for a large editioned screen print that is less than a year old! N-word please! Non-sense. One lesson I never forgot in my economics course was "opportunity cost". What else could you buy for that same money. Now since the way the original poster phrased the question leads one to think strictly in terms of investment, it is very hard to justify the prices for most of his editions. You cant turn around without tripping over another artist which you could buy for similar money that will have exponentially greater growth over the long term (strictly talking Banksy prints vs other artist originals. Banksy originals are another conversation). Im not going to start naming artists, but let's say that the only reason I have been able to afford an art collection is because of people over paying for signed Banksy prints I was fortunate enough to buy at source. While I love the works I have on my walls and get a ton of non-monetary fulfillment from them on a daily basis, there is no doubt in my mind that selling those prints to buy what I collect was a no brainer investment wise. Time will tell of course, but I am very confident that investment wise I made very wise decisions. More so, the enjoyment I get living with the unique works or art I was able to buy, is, without trying to sound corny, f**king priceless. would love to hear others chime in on this. Seems it could be an interesting debate. Furthermore, I think Banksy would approve of what Ive done. After all, his work turned me into a life long art appreciator and collector. It has allowed me to support other artists' careers and watch the flourish. Ill also add, these stupid POW lotteries have made it very difficult for me to add to my collection in the recent past...Bring back the old school bun fight where I had a chance. oof.
