Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by Reader on Oct 21, 2020 20:21:05 GMT 1, Looking at this auction in context...I am actually fucking impressed by the result. Banksy has just out-sold Richter and JMB - both quality examples and bigger pieces. The iconic Riley was pulled (I assume because they didn’t have enough pre-auction registered interest.) We are indeed on the verge of a second covd wave in Europe and USA is in a pre-election mire... ...For a graffiti lad from Bristol to achieve that result at this time is indeed impressive. This ! It pretty much murdered some of the biggest institutionally validated names in contemporary art. From Turf War to Dismaland to NYC Residency to Walled Off to Bristol Museum to his street works and studio practice. No one to touch him really. Up there with Christo, Beuys, Hirst etc for sheer dogged determination to do it on his own terms. Got to respect it, whatever you think of his studio work.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by irl1 on Oct 21, 2020 20:28:56 GMT 1, Market is softening. Too much uncertainty before USA election, layoffs continuing to happen in large numbers, more coronavirus shutdowns in Europe, brexit, and the reality starting to settle in that we are going to be dealing with the virus for years if not indefinitely even after vaccines are proven effective and enough can be produced. I was suggesting 20m a month ago when this posted, but I've also been saying for months that October is when things will start to get bad. We start a 6 week lockdown at midnight tonight in Ireland

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by JockoLad on Oct 21, 2020 20:29:01 GMT 1, My 2 pence Worth - I would consider this a poor result for the "Show Me The Monet" based on recent results and the peak price point set by "Monkey Parliament"at 12.2 USD. It did go above estimate, but as always the estimate is purposely low to encourage bidding. Many people in the so-called "know" were taking bets on it if would beat MP's result or even 20 mil USD and that was answered with a resounding NO. 8.4 million pounds for a painting by a living artist is nothing to sneeze at, but even the ultimate hype beast can't be happy with the result. Get prepared for the market to be flooded with high end Banksy works both privately and publicly due to todays result and sellers ready to hedge their bets after rejecting very high private sale offers the past 30 - 60 days. It seems that ironically the phrase "SHOW ME THE MONEY" has all new meaning on 10/21/20, than it did on 10/20/20. Let the real Hunger Games begin and "May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor" To be fair you called it in 2008 when Flags sold for £620 on eBay. You were spot in your prediction that the market was levelling off.

He has 'out-sold' them but then, both the JMB and Richter were not their best and a 'great' Banksy canvas only shows up in a blue moon ( until now ) Yes, Riley got pulled as too little pre-sale interest at the aggressive estimate.
Overall a very soft sale. Curious to see what happens at Christie's tomorrow.

I think the Banksy was weak. Not a classic image and badly painted in the flesh. More about the concept than the execution.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by sl on Oct 21, 2020 20:41:39 GMT 1, Let’s also keep in mind that MP was a vastly larger work and better known. Plus it was a true original not a re-work that was very topical for when it was sold.
The fact that it beat the result of an original JMB by such a large margin is stunning and firmly plants him as one of the greatest.
Those that are now start selling prints and originals will enjoy the results and there will be no shortage of willing buyers eager to add a Banksy to their collection.

I’m pretty sure he owns an AP of every print, and I thought he was one of his early benefactors and bought pretty much one entire show. I’m sure someone will know...

I can't remember I’m pretty sure he owns an AP of every print, and I thought he was one of his early benefactors and bought pretty much one entire show. I’m sure someone will know... I've always wondered how much (if any) role Hirst has played in manipulating the Banksy market. He would certainly have a vested interest.
Regarding your last comment above, I always thought Hirst bought out every Paul Insect work at a show back in 2006-2007, not Banksy, but I could have that wrong. It was a long time ago...

Considering its size, £7m is a stunning price for SMTM in my book.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by medichead on Oct 21, 2020 21:31:59 GMT 1, This was a predictable result for a piece that is good example of Banksy’s humour, but not as impressive in concept, scale, execution, or timelessness as Devolved Parliament.
Anyone who expected anything else is blindly, perhaps delusionally optimistic about the art market...
This is a very good result for the seller and team Banksy
