Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by tonys on Oct 21, 2020 21:33:02 GMT 1, Monkey Parliament went for ยฃ10m but bear in mind what a whopping size of piece it is. Absolutely massive, practically the size of the side of a house. Considering its size, ยฃ7m is a stunning price for SMTM in my book. is a painting valued on the amount of oil it uses now?
you best not visit the Louvre in that case

Paintings typically are valued based on their size, because to price them otherwise implies the gallery thinks some works are weaker than others. By pricing on size alone, the gallery isnโt commenting on the strength of a piece and therefore doesnโt make a buyer nervous.
Size is key.

Nice one.
Massive works need massive pockets.

It is not the sole factor for determining value, but it can play a large role. A museum will just tell you a work is priceless, regardless of size.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by jp on Oct 21, 2020 21:52:01 GMT 1, why would you suggest he 'manipulated' the market? Because he is one of a handful of people who have both the means and the motive? I don't have any direct evidence. I'm saying it would not surprise me.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by Deleted on Oct 21, 2020 21:56:59 GMT 1, He has 'out-sold' them but then, both the JMB and Richter were not their best and a 'great' Banksy canvas only shows up in a blue moon ( until now ) Yes, Riley got pulled as too little pre-sale interest at the aggressive estimate. Overall a very soft sale. Curious to see what happens at Christie's tomorrow. I think the Banksy was weak. Not a classic image and badly painted in the flesh. More about the concept than the execution.
The JMB was also incredibly weak.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by edwardgribble on Oct 21, 2020 23:08:41 GMT 1, Banksy outstripping Hirst in terms of sales value. Cast a long shadow selling for the price of a Banksy print.. Falling v Rising stars etc etc etc Keep on thinking tho what Damienโs Banksy collection must be worth now
Used to do some work for quite a well known artist. When he split from his wife she kept the house and he had the Banksy collection off the walls. There were quite a few and not the run of the mill stuff either. About 3 years ago. Ouch.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by JJN on Oct 22, 2020 8:17:55 GMT 1, My 2 pence Worth - I would consider this a poor result for the "Show Me The Monet" based on recent results and the peak price point set by "Monkey Parliament"at 12.2 USD. It did go above estimate, but as always the estimate is purposely low to encourage bidding. Many people in the so-called "know" were taking bets on it if would beat MP's result or even 20 mil USD and that was answered with a resounding NO. 8.4 million pounds for a painting by a living artist is nothing to sneeze at, but even the ultimate hype beast can't be happy with the result. Get prepared for the market to be flooded with high end Banksy works both privately and publicly due to todays result and sellers ready to hedge their bets after rejecting very high private sale offers the past 30 - 60 days. It seems that ironically the phrase "SHOW ME THE MONEY" has all new meaning on 10/21/20, than it did on 10/20/20. Let the real Hunger Games begin and "May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor" meanwhile back in forumworld, what impact if any do you think this will have on the postcard market ? Hat Tip 1 of funniest things I've read in Years !

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by nex on Oct 22, 2020 10:04:22 GMT 1, life is a funny thing, one minute you're winning, the next you're losing. Suddenly your good health is taken away from you, or a job you've based your life and the wellbeing of your family around, out of nowhere is lost. A myriad of other storms can cross our life's path making for tough choices and pain and suffering as you re-find your footing.
A tad of humility, a rye smile, a nod to the luck we have and reminder that what's important in life is rarely simply about a number in a bank account, is certainly not a bad thing.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by Monsieur2T on Oct 22, 2020 10:15:13 GMT 1, This was a predictable result for a piece that is good example of Banksyโs humour, but not as impressive in concept, scale, execution, or timelessness as Devolved Parliament. Anyone who expected anything else is blindly, perhaps delusionally optimistic about the art market... This is a very good result for the seller and team Banksy

Whether he collects his prints tho I'm not that sure. This is the Napalm canvas from Hirst's Serpentine collection show back in 2006. It was about 2m tall. The gallery sold a signed and editioned giclee of the image in their shop. The only other Banksy on show was a Lenin on roadsign.

Banksy - Show Me The Monet, by vernaxley on Oct 22, 2020 16:29:39 GMT 1, When Hirst showed off his collection at the Serpentine BITD, was there any Banksy in there? I can't remember Iโm pretty sure he owns an AP of every print, and I thought he was one of his early benefactors and bought pretty much one entire show. Iโm sure someone will know... Hirst supported Banksy when he was struggling and living in a camper van. He helped him out with a studio in Newport St. That building is now Hirst's Newport Gallery. Hirst bought a lot of early works and supported the early shows at Laz. Another key figure in Banksy's early days is Glastonbury's Michael Eavis. Banksy used to spend a lot of time on Worthy farm when he was younger.
