It is not the sole factor for determining value, but it can play a large role. A museum will just tell you a work is priceless, regardless of size. |

Overall a very soft sale. Curious to see what happens at Christie's tomorrow. I think the Banksy was weak. Not a classic image and badly painted in the flesh. More about the concept than the execution.
The JMB was also incredibly weak.

It did go above estimate, but as always the estimate is purposely low to encourage bidding. Many people in the so-called "know" were taking bets on it if would beat MP's result or even 20 mil USD and that was answered with a resounding NO. 8.4 million pounds for a painting by a living artist is nothing to sneeze at, but even the ultimate hype beast can't be happy with the result. Get prepared for the market to be flooded with high end Banksy works both privately and publicly due to todays result and sellers ready to hedge their bets after rejecting very high private sale offers the past 30 - 60 days. It seems that ironically the phrase "SHOW ME THE MONEY" has all new meaning on 10/21/20, than it did on 10/20/20. Let the real Hunger Games begin and "May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor" meanwhile back in forumworld, what impact if any do you think this will have on the postcard market ?

This is the Napalm canvas from Hirst's Serpentine collection show back in 2006. It was about 2m tall. The gallery sold a signed and editioned giclee of the image in their shop. The only other Banksy on show was a Lenin on roadsign.

Hirst supported Banksy when he was struggling and living in a camper van. He helped him out with a studio in Newport St. That building is now Hirst's Newport Gallery. Hirst bought a lot of early works and supported the early shows at Laz. Another key figure in Banksy's early days is Glastonbury's Michael Eavis. Banksy used to spend a lot of time on Worthy farm when he was younger.
