UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by firstimer on Apr 7, 2017 11:20:10 GMT 1, Hey guys,ย
I just purchased a new HM piece ย It is VAT free because I live in the states and the piece was bought in the UK.ย
I happen to be in the UK currently and have a query...ย
What are your thoughts on me picking up the piece and taking it on board myself instead of the piece being shipped? Could I, in fact be skipping import sales duties by doing this?ย
It's just a thought right now as I'm not sure if the HM piece will be rolled or flat. As we all know, if it's flat... there's no way in hell I'll be taking that on board!ย
Has anyone taken art on board before? Moreso VAT free art?
*I'm not advocating this, this is just a good base for me to air my thoughts with knowledgeable folk.ย

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Hubble Bubble on Apr 7, 2017 12:01:09 GMT 1, I can't see there would be any issue in you buying here and taking it personally back to the USA.
You are not skipping international sales tax as none is due. You are simply skipping international delivery costs.
Ensure you have relevant purchase receipts with you and that you are familiar with the customs code for your country that allows you to bring such a work in free of tax. As long as you have these then, if you are stopped at customs control in the USA, all should be well.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by belly123 on Apr 7, 2017 12:02:55 GMT 1, Hey, When I moved to Australia I never had any problems. I just walked through customs at U.K.,Dubai,Malaysia and Australia without any fuss. They asked me what was in the tubes at Dubai and I just said it was art and they said that's fine. I took 3 Banksy prints and a few other bits. From my experience you should be fine.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Pipes on Apr 7, 2017 12:09:33 GMT 1, I believe on the US customs form, one of the last questions is "value of all goods purchased abroad"
I was carrying a tube once and TSA asked what it was and told me to fill in that section of the form.
Its value was under $1000 and I wasn't asked to pay any duties.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by firstimer on Apr 7, 2017 12:30:59 GMT 1, Hmmm, if shipped there is 100% import sales tax to pay, I had to pay on my last piece I bought from the U.K.
I just don't know how they find this out if I take it on board myself unless I write it somewhere that I'm bringing in a piece that excluded vat upon purchase?

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Hubble Bubble on Apr 7, 2017 14:43:59 GMT 1, I suspect the reason it excluded VAT was in order that you pay the relevant customs duty in your own country. Just find the relevant rate and pay it if you're asked on entry?
Simples.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by firstimer on Apr 8, 2017 14:15:50 GMT 1, Thanks for the reply guys.
This piece is ยฃ10k+. Excluding vat. I guess if I take it onboard and don't claim it, I could get away without paying import duties but also risk being fined even more for not declaring an item bought without VAT.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Poster Bob on Feb 12, 2021 18:12:09 GMT 1, You should have called and had them adjust the invoice before paying. I'd recommend doing this in the future, but all call centers are claiming hard times due to Covid. It can be hard to get someone on the line.

I just got an email with the only option to pay, nowhere to contact or anything from DHL. Basically said if I didnโt pay, there would be storage charges a d after so many days returned to sender.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Marty 80 on Feb 12, 2021 18:29:59 GMT 1, I think the 5% applied from importing outside the EU prior to brexit. I.e buying from USA to uk should Be the the 5% and then no tariffs sending around EU. I could be wrong, as Iโm looking at buying something from EU but donโt want to be stung with 20%.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by LJCal on Feb 12, 2021 19:41:29 GMT 1, Itโs not that complicated, art is 5% import VAT when coming in from anywhere in the world that includes the EU now. For EU sales the vendor should not apply VAT their end if itโs a primary sale and you just pick it up on import. It does add cost for secondary sales but if the parties split the cost the vendor receives 2.5% less and buyer pays 2.5% more. If youโve been over charged you should contact the courier in the first instance and provide them a summary and evidence of over payment, most of the time they will deal with it and issue a refund, if they canโt I believe there is a way to claim through HMRC in which case call HMRC customer services and theyโll advise.
