UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Wanchope on Jan 11, 2022 20:30:26 GMT 1, Hey all and Happy New Year! Ok so another question for those who can understand HMRCs website! I have just bought an original drawing from the US and heโs asked what code they should put on so I only pay the correct 5%. I have found this www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/commodities/9701910000 but then it says I could go for a 5% or 20% ?? An additional code of VATR can be used to get the 5%
So knowing all the above is the correct code 9701910000VATR ?
Thanks all

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by ecudat on Feb 12, 2022 17:55:50 GMT 1, I've never had anyone add VATR and haven't known that to be needed, but perhaps it is. I've never understood why it says "5% or 20%" for the correct original art code as it is always 5% regardless. But I guess there's no harm in adding the extra letters.
On a separate note, can someone help me with these questions please?
If I have something I received last year, I know I can still claim the extra VAT back on it. But, if I don't have the sticker they whacked on the parcel originally showing the customs charges, am I screwed?
Secondly, a piece I just received got charged at 20% and with excise duty, so I have a sizeable claim to make, but there are so many different documents attached to the parcel that it is confusing as hell as to which to include. It isn't helped that on the commercial invoice they wrote weird codes that are for the paint used rather than the original painting one (that they used on other docs). I am tending to think that I don't include that document as it might appear to undermine my case!?
Thanks for any help

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Funny Farmiom on Mar 14, 2022 13:09:14 GMT 1, Hi folks,
I have imported an original My Dog Sighs skate deck from Europe to the UK, itโs completely original and all done by hand.
DHL have invoiced me at a rate of 20% and not the 5% for original art (produced entirely by hand).
Has anybody had issues like this and how was it resolved?
Any thanks in advance.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Acme Thunderer on Mar 14, 2022 13:47:19 GMT 1, Number one rule is donโt pay the invoice yet. If you have, then you have already lost with DHL.
Speak to someone on the phone / email them / complete a form online - then they will hopefully then arrange for a department called โSutherlandsโ to release for delivery (before any payment).
Keep every email, keep all packaging, take photos of everything, be patient and stick to your guns.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Poster Bob on Mar 14, 2022 15:12:43 GMT 1, They're going to refer to a debt collector. I just had two bills come in through the mail, both at 20%, and this is months after I provided proof as to the contents and was told over the phone that I will only pay 5%.

Will see how I get on, They will claim that the sender did not properly or clearly declare the item. Then they'll tell you that they are just trying to recoup the costs they paid to HMRC as a result. They will threaten the use of a collection agency, you'll then need to pay, and then go through the trouble of making a claim with HMRC for a refund.
I'd love to hear if you have an experience which is less of a hassle, but I doubt it'll happen.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Johnny Sarcasm on Mar 14, 2022 15:27:24 GMT 1, It's an absolute shambles. I know of two others who got an Ai Weiwei Pequi Tree recently directly from Portuguese gallery and we were charged ยฃ140, ยฃ80 and ยฃ40 respectively. All were sent the same way from Portugal. We all live in the UK a max 30 miles apart. After many calls and emails, nothing changed... ๐คก๐คก๐คก

Does it state that it's an original work of art on the form, with the correct tariff code? not got the item yet but Iโm guessing not looking at the charge, the invoice I have from the gallery states original so will have to see if they do deliver it.

The same here (Pequi Tree) - mine was ยฃ86.25, a friend of mine was charged ยฃ90.00. I spent too long on a premium phone call to DHL customer services resulting in absolutly nothing!

As Geester quite rightly says, I'm pretty sure this will be down to how the seller has done the paperwork.
The Commercial Invoice the key here?
On here should be the correct Tariff/Commodity Code, description, value, and certain 'statements' etc.
I think if this filled out correctly, DHL, or any other would be able to charge randomly like this.
Just a suggestion, but is it an idea to ask to see the Commercial Invoice before any item is shipped? You can then check all the details correct, and in the correct format?

Anyone know of any contact details for someone with authority in complaints/claims etc seeing as they make it impossibly hard to deal with issues in a logical fashion?! That would be great, speak to somebody with some sense and not just a call centre!

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Acme Thunderer on Mar 14, 2022 19:55:41 GMT 1, Keep as much of your communication and evidence on email rather than phoning. If they donโt reply, it will eventually strengthen your case. You just need to make sure you cover yourself as they will not update files when you liaise with different people. Worked for me in the end with DHL (after 9 months).
My case was a print that was described as Original Signed Art and coded correctly on paperwork. I even viewed the DHL order before it was sent and DHL still tried to charge 20%. Eventually they waived their fees as well as amending vat by issuing a credit note. A ยฃ151 bill was then changed to ยฃ35.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by John The Badgers on Mar 14, 2022 20:02:43 GMT 1, Some courier companies are absolutely crap. But, then again, so are some art galleries when they fill out the customs declaration form. I've bought from galleries who have put as the item description, the title of the artwork. When the item is described as "fight for a dream" then you are asking for trouble! It could literally be anything!
Which is the point I was trying to make above Mooncub.
The onus very much on the seller, i.e. the gallery to complete things correctly.
I deal with international shipments at work (not art), and all boils down to the Commercial Invoice raised.
Very specific what you have to put on here, as mentioned, Tariff/Commodity Codes, values, contact details of receiver, and certain statements.
You should easily be able to check this before sending, if I was buying from abroad, I would definitely ask to see it before they upload to DHL/TNT etc, surely this would save a whole world of pain.
If this not done correctly, I can see why the carriers applying different import/export charges.
Hope you get sorted funnyfarmiom.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by mrizzle on Mar 14, 2022 23:11:13 GMT 1, They're going to refer to a debt collector. I just had two bills come in through the mail, both at 20%, and this is months after I provided proof as to the contents and was told over the phone that I will only pay 5%.
I had a VERY similar experience a few months back with a piece. However, on phoning them to highlight my surprise and utter disgust at having received a threatening letter about referring collection to a debt collecting agency they were very quick to back down once someone actually took the time to open up my case file. However, I did have the added benefit of an email chain in which they admitted fault as all paperwork clearly stated the correct import code and explicitly stated exactly what the contents was from the very outset. Hopefully you can reach a similar resolution but itโs totally unacceptable to receive such contradictory correspondence.

You would think they would have a finance/ invoicing department that could get it sorted quickly although they know the more difficult they make it the less people will try or just give up. Itโs hard finding any contact details for DHL Express?

I think the imports and customs number was 01494 576156 ... all i can say is I wish you well on your DHL adventure and learn to love their hold music Thanks dude, appreciate it ๐๐
Shit that sounds like fun, who was the final department as that sounds like a good option! UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by Funny Farmiom on Mar 17, 2022 22:46:46 GMT 1, Quick update, skate deck has been delivered and I have been in comms over email with DHLs invoice and finance team and they have stated that it has been processed through customs not marked as art, Iโd assume the gallery has sent it marks as a skate deck only therefore accruing the 20% charge?
Iโm away until Saturday so itโs with my parents so I can check all paperwork when Iโm home. Iโve told them itโs not acceptable and they have given me one of two options, pay it and claim it back myself with HMRC or they will send an amendment request on my behalf and deal with it as long as I provide proof and details which I do have but DHL charge ยฃ45 for this.
My decision I now, is the hassle and time involved claiming it back worth more or less than them doing it for ยฃ45? Not sure how hard it is to claim an overpayment back from HMRC but if anybody has any experience of this it would be good to know.
Getting hold of DHL was fairly straight forward over email after filling in their contact form and they respond quickly.

UK Import Customs Charges ๐ฌ๐ง, by ajr on Mar 19, 2022 15:29:48 GMT 1, same, DHL are jokers. I disputed a customs charge and exchanged emails 3-4 times and they confirmed I was correct and would look into amending the invoice. One day later I was contacted by the seller who said DHL were shipping the parcel back to them that same day unless I paid for the customs immediately.
So I ended up paying the original incorrect customs invoice just so that I could stop the parcel being returned to the sender.
they had all my details and multiple emails, but NOT ONCE did they contact me saying that the arcel would be returned. Thank god the seller had the decency to get i touch with me to warn me.
now i guess i need to continue the dispute and wait for a refund, but i have written it off.
