Market is dead and these prints are not the best. Easy pass

I have been collecting Shrigley prints from Jealous gallery mainly for a few years. I thought he was doing too many but now think that’s not true as market growing and always sell out. I think the upcoming Shrigley only auction will be crucial to his market going forward. He seems to be picking up new fans and prints look great in houses and also in groups together.

His prints do not always sell out, and with the increased regularity of releases, they struggle to sell out due to the tiering system. The release pages at Jealous and Nicolai Wallner make this clear. Only the best images sell out.

Furthermore, while I would say that under normal circumstances a single-artist sale would be a great event, it is taking place at the worst possible time, only online, in a garbage market. We’ve also seen what the frequency of such sales did to Banksy’s market, should this be more than just a one-off event.

So do you think that the price of an artwork is directly proportional to the timing of the work made?   

Hi Lroy, I totally agree with you. I don't have a print... I can't afford it... and I don't think I'll get one like this either.
Better to buy for example a handmade bag from Lady Pink... for only 20 dollars!... If you ask to sign everything... she also fulfills your requests. (Still waiting for someone from the Invader staff to get back to me about an autograph on a book?).

No problem with the price or the artwork. It's shrigley, what would you expect? Any less than this and they'll be snapped up and on eBay 3k+ before the days out. If you love the art he has quality poster range that's made bigger all the time.
My issue is, how long is he going to do this for? Is he not going to change it up at all? It's like Hirst only ever pickling animals. This is why I don't have such a problem with big artists getting ripped off by new guys. It keeps things moving. (Vice versa is a always a no-no of course)

Ignoring pricing for a moment… which of these two images do you prefer? The “everything is fine” print has more detail/texture and a straightforward message but I’m not sure it’s particularly wall friendly (skull and crossbones a little morbid/not for everyone). The chilli I was immediately drawn to as bold and great use of colour, but I’m not entirely sure of the message sentiment… and although I do actually like the print, when i consider price, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t struggling with the simplicity of the piece. Yes this is Shrigley and that conversation often occurs (his whole style is “simple”, that’s the point) but this is way more simple that most!

So the chilli is my favourite/more wall friendly but I dare say, when considering the price (where price really does come into it!) it’s hard not to think I could paint something like it myself (and yes I know it’s one thing to just say that!) so why on earth am I spending £2000 of my hard earned on it?! Not to mention how prolific Shrigley is at knocking out these prints.

That’s what they said years ago when I purchased my first Warhol!

I would not buy it if you are thinking of it as an investment. There are better Shrigley prints available on the secondary market for the same money.
