Flipping Art โข The Debate, by yungchrollo on Apr 20, 2021 21:48:47 GMT 1, If you check the people opening their own "gallery stores" selling almost exclusively Hebru and Kayla Mahaffey.... you will notice they are often AP runs for low edition old prints.... Don't think you could get those unless you were FNF. That being said, those gallery stores usually charger higher than secondary (Ebay, recent auction results)

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by jimmyjam on Apr 20, 2021 22:27:20 GMT 1, These jerks talk about people flipping art - when they know their galleries are manipulating the hell out of the originals at auctions... by the way - all the galleries that represent them... owned by rich American white families...
I do find it racist and ridiculous he points out Chinese and Europeans when all his stuff at comic con - i mean complex con is in the US - and all bought up by sneakerheads who flip that shit silly the next second on ebay. They are in line with the items and also making a post on ebay at the same time! Ha!
Honestly I think most of these new artists are seeing their markets peak and are now getting pissy with everyone. Hebru's market peaked years ago in my opinion. Unfortunately these american galleries milked the crap out of these guys way too soon. These artist knew this tho. So what's the big deal?
I think Hebru will really regret posting that post. I thought a lot of his market was in China?
Oh let's not forget Kehinde Wiley using Chinese workers to make his originals.... nymag.com/arts/art/rules/kehinde-wiley-2012-4/

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by vernaxley on Apr 21, 2021 17:06:09 GMT 1, Lot of artists would kill to be in a position where they sell out their editions and create a secondary market.
If you dislike flippers, then the answer is simple: don't sell limited editions.

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by LJCal on Apr 21, 2021 19:37:36 GMT 1, He actually charged $1,200+ for the giclee of the airplane! I call it scam. Ridiculous. You all realize those Hirst editions from Heni are giclees, right? The man makes a very valid point, I must say I've not enjoyed any of the Henis I have owned, probably why they are purely for flipping and probably only 1 in 5 make it out of the box.

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by Jaylove on Apr 22, 2021 4:31:21 GMT 1, Perhaps if his art wasn't utter dogshit people wouldn't flip it, the fact that he thinks he has a legacy made me chuckle. Also not quite sure his probiem with Europeans and Asians as they pretty much make up his entite market. Completely missed the point. He's talking about black artists using black/African imagery that is being purchased by people who don't give a shit about any of it just to flip. As a black person myself, I completely feel where he's coming from.

This European capitalised on African art. But you gotta wonder, who are paying those prices? It's really murky. Could be rigged to justify higher prices at primary.

What about all those people who flip Murakami and Nara that use asian/Japanese superflat movement images and culture...
I think once you partake in complexcon multiple times - selling items you know will be flipped by anyone on eBay... this statement is bs. Heโs part of flipping and he knows it. If he wants to call anyone out he should call out the big galleries who are really manipulating prices at extreme levels - but he doesnโt have the guts to do that. It will kill his career in a second so he goes after race...

I think you missed the point. His art is crap, how can you call what he does African imagery? Iโm really not sure what this has to do with race, the fact is people flip art from artists from all ethnic backgrounds. If artists are going to get precious about it and insult the people who actually pay money for their art then Iโd suggest being a commercial artist is not for them.

He's talking about black artists using black/African imagery that is being purchased by people who don't give a shit about any of it just to flip. As a black person myself, I completely feel where he's coming from. This is such a tricky subject, but I have to admit I find it slightly ridiculous to make it about race. It's just the art market. People buy and sell all sorts of art, for all sorts of reasons... but mostly profit.
Would it be OK for black collectors to flip the work because they understand it better? Or would black collectors never flip it? Both these ideas are clearly wrong. Collectors are collectors and flippers flip. Their colour doesn't come into it.
And to equate it to BLM, or exploiting black people, just smacks of someone with an over-inflated opinion of their work's importance. If there's demand for their work, great, but other people are going to look to profit from it too. That's just a fact of life for all successful artists.

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by Reader on Apr 22, 2021 10:48:11 GMT 1,
For the record, the original post is from Basil Kincaid. This is his philosophy. Whether it is Hebru's is another matter. I imagine he's never heard it said before and it chimed with something that's been eating at him.
www.instagram.com/basilkincaid
I have works in my collection that I got for hundreds of dollars. A couple of those works are now worth 5 figures easy but you donโt see me running to cash in. โข A lot of people got the idea of investing in art all backwards. If you fuck with black art and black artists ideally youโre investing so that we can help build the vision of a better future reality than the one we currently share. โข If youโre in black art to profit off of our labor and exploit our genius then you are literally a reflection of everything weโre fighting against. โข This is why Iโm so picky with who gets my original work. โข Fuck the money. Align yourself with collectors that believe in your journey and contributions to culture. โข To the artists reading this. Research whoโs getting your work and know that all money ainโt good money. Align with people that really believe in you and want to support your life as an artist.

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by NYart on Apr 22, 2021 11:16:03 GMT 1, Iโd argue the two of them are fortunate to be at places in their careers where theyโre able to be picky over who they sell to. Good for them if they can use that to achieve whatever vision they see for their work, community etc. But itโs pretty bad advice for the 99% of artists who havenโt made it, and struggle to get by. Not really fair of him to ask that of artists whom he has no idea of their situations.
I think he also greatly over estimates the amount of money spent on art by people who love it and want to keep it forever. Even the 1% that could afford to buy all the art they want and keep it forever donโt. They didnโt reach that level of wealth by letting emotion and sentiment get in the way of their investing and profits. I intend on keeping a lot of my collection forever, as I donโt see it happening with many pieces, but if they reach a point where theyโre worth more than I like them, thereโs no reason not to sell. Also again not really fair of him to expect everyone to keep everything forever if selling could improve their situations. Heโs fortunate that he canโt see a scenario where heโd ever need to..
If he got his way thereโd be millions of artists sitting on piles of work with very few buyers.

He canโt be that picky, you can buy his original work quite easily for a few thousand dollars. Some are even up on Artsy where he has the grand total of 330 followers. Think this guy is a little bit deluded about his own importance and worrying about a problem that doesnโt really exist for him.

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by Happy Shopper on Apr 22, 2021 12:07:29 GMT 1, Is it just me or is this guy talking total crap? "If you fuck with black art and black artists..." What on earth does that mean? Does he think buying art from black artists is f*cking with them? In this context "Fuck with" means "Buy from" / "Interact with".
It's like "Bad" meaning "Good" in the 80s.
I know. Confusing.

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by jimmyjam on Apr 22, 2021 12:50:27 GMT 1, Lots of outspoken BLM artist have been totally silent during the Stop Asian hate movement. Hebru and Jammie Holmes and bunch of these artists have been dead silent during this movement. To add the Chinese part is really not ok. Itโs a racist statement from uneducated artists who are asking for equality but are ironically racist themselves.
Many of these artists have also been riding the BLM movement and treating collectors like shit as well - of all colors. All these $12-17k prints these artist/ are setting for themselves with their galleries - after only breaking out less than a year... give me a break. These guys are milking it more than anyone else and many are just making the same art over and over. Nothing new.
Many of the BLM artist have made a fortune off this movement thinking they are owed... Iโm sorry but then pay the older African American artists who missed out for decades. Hand them the money... these young artist are not owed anything... no matter what color. Honestly I have found Native American artists, Hispanic artists and Muslim artists being more forgot and ignored than anyone.
Calling out your biggest market is probably not the smartest thing for any artist. China can easily ban him and they will - if he continues to call them out. That will kill his market or any new artist in a second. Itโs incredibly stupid to call out China and all of Europe for any artist - of any color.

Confusing. OK. So he doesn't want people to buy 'black art' (whatever that is) from black artists. Unless they are...black? ...or just not Chinese? Oddly, in that part he's saying it's good they invest in black art. He just doesn't like them reselling it. For some reason he thinks that's bad for the artists... although I'm not sure why.
I'm sure artists' sales should be managed, and prices managed, but some reselling can lift prices overall, possibly making an artist more well known and popular... which you'd think he'd be happy about.

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by Sunny Garcia on Apr 22, 2021 14:44:24 GMT 1, Perhaps if his art wasn't utter dogshit people wouldn't flip it, the fact that he thinks he has a legacy made me chuckle. I don't get it. Black artists are being purchased to flip because they are flippable at the moment. So are a ton of hispanic/asian/white artists.
How is that different from using any imagery (regardless of color), being purchased by people who don't give a shit about any of it just to flip?

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by Reader on Apr 22, 2021 15:01:56 GMT 1,
I guess it's the same as some people finding it a bit distasteful that Frat Boy Capitalists are using their inheritance to buy and flip work dealing with social justice issues. It's possible to have more than one thought in your head at the same time. I.E Make art whilst not particularly liking the art market and the sense of entitlement many flippers seem to exhibit.

He's talking about black artists using black/African imagery that is being purchased by people who don't give a shit about any of it just to flip. As a black person myself, I completely feel where he's coming from. His art has nothing to do with it. And really who cares what you think? I don't own any of his stuff but see no difference between his art and many of the others who are talked about on here.

Flipping Art โข The Debate, by Jaylove on Apr 23, 2021 1:30:58 GMT 1, Completely missed the point. Missing the point again. Black people being told how to think and feel by people who are not black. Interesting.

I'm questioning why they would feel it only applies to them because they're black, when it's an issue for all artists. He's voicing an opinion, not an unquestionable fact.
