Flipping Art • The Debate, by manchestermike on Aug 7, 2007 10:39:51 GMT 1, Lets face it, most of this stems from jealousy or simple frustration about not being able to obtain a copy of your favorite art for the original price. I live in Peterborough and Billy Connolly is coming to town for 2 nights, I wanted 4 tickets at £30.00 each from the Box Office, all sold out within a few hours. Checked Ebay and arseholes are selling them for £70.00 each and I have to buy them from some arse in Rugby if I want to see the show in my home town!. Bought the family a DVD instead, and all are dissappointed!! Same thing really? These people bought up 10,20,30+ tickets!! Boils my blood!!
I'd see that as a godsend

Flipping Art • The Debate, by pkt75 on Aug 7, 2007 10:50:56 GMT 1, Due to secondry market, i am unable to own a JD or any micallef for that matter. The last prints were compleatley out of reach for me price wise, as a result i intend on gettin the next banksy (if im lucky enough) to sell and fund this void in my wallspace. I have never sold a single piece of my art and not intend to, This is just a 'Needs must'. Would this make me a bagger or flipper or jus a stratejic collector? Collecting art can be as ruthless as selling art, we all may congatulate each other on the pieces we own, but secretly we would rather have it than they do. I dont have any problem takin the oppartunity away form someone else getting a Banksy so i can get my micallef. At the end of the day would that person truely give a toss that i couldnt get hold of a micaleff? I think not, so why should I care?

Flipping Art • The Debate, by jboy on Aug 7, 2007 11:22:12 GMT 1, I also feel its about whether you have a passion for art or are in it strictly for business. (Still remembering the thread about the tits who thought they'd bag DFace's 'what wars are for' prints'. Well done to those that ensured they left Stolen Space pissed off)
that would have been me ;D Pissed of was an understatement - think the guy wanted to fight me. Must have screwed him out of a good 2k

Flipping Art • The Debate, by corblimeylimey on Aug 7, 2007 13:44:59 GMT 1, I don't really think there is much difference in terminology. I think the only thing that annoys people on these boards is the out and out blatant buying of something one day and selling it on at a hugely inflated price the next day. Apart from that a little bit of buying and selling and trading up makes the world go round. I would never have been able to afford an adam neate print had I not thought that I would be able to sell a few bits to pay for it.
Well said pezlow.

Im against the baggers and flippers, tho i would be a hypocrite to say i havnt benifited from them. Art is there bussiness and we at times are there customers somewhere down the line. There cannot be many members on here that hasnt bought art on secondry mkt.

There is quite alot of hypocrites on the forums - but i don't think that will change as there is so many people joining and a load of new opinions with people asking the same questions as the new members were a month ago.
The same question will be asked again in a months time on another thread as people have forgotten this one. I remember just a few weeks ago brining up the same coversation and reaching the conclusion that people have different opinions on flipping / bagging or whatever and nothing is going to change.
I say carry on as you wish - its up to you. Sometimes ive bought things on ebay, sometimes ive sold things on ebay. Its not a crime.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by ABC on Aug 7, 2007 14:38:07 GMT 1, In the queue to a recent show I was talking to someone who clearly had no real clue about the whole art thing and didnt have any interest as they could not hold a conversation for longer than two minutes about what art they liked, What they did know was how much the prints were going to be worth and what they had snapped up in the past few weeks, to me this is a bagger. Ive flipped to buy larger things and without that I would not be able to afford them.

The only reason we are paying high, HIGH prices for these prints is not just because we like them but because they will rise even higher in value and one day make us all a lot of money.
That said, we are ALL FLIPPERS !!!

I'm a flipper - i have never said otherwise. But i do have a massive interest in Art and have a nice collection.
A bagger would have lots of flatscreen tvs and a pool rather than having stuff up to enjoy which you have bought with the proceeds from selling prints.

Maybe a ps3. You get my drift. The money will go on other stuff apart from art, the money made will always be put back in if your a flipper.
Thats my point.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by alderevans2007 on Aug 7, 2007 15:38:48 GMT 1, A year ago, I went on ebay to look for a poster ..... By the end of that night I had spent a small fortune on art from POW, oblivious to value ......... I ended up selling them for a profit because I couldn't justify keeping them.
Now, I have a beautiful Guy Denning canvass and a couple of prints that I probably wouldn't have got if I hadn't of flipped a few prints.
In the words of Nicky from Big Brother "Sometimes in life, you have to be selfish to get what you want" ;D

Flipping Art • The Debate, by fautebol on Aug 7, 2007 16:09:17 GMT 1, Lets face it, most of this stems from jealousy or simple frustration about not being able to obtain a copy of your favorite art for the original price.
Everybody do what they want, but I don't think there is only this.
I don't put stock market shares on my walls. The "art" market which has developped thank to the internet is awesome to me because giving me a lot of choice....But, a lot of the discussion here has nothing to do with creation. I guess some people won't discuss about an artist just not to create hype around it. Discussing who will be the next, not in terms of artistic valuie and creation but in terms of ROI is quite boring...When ROI is so good, when money flow so much, people buy pretty much anyhting...There I feel sometimes that some prints are collected like phone cards or whatever...I don't see why some prints would be art except that it's on art paper, numbered and whatever...
Could it become so s**tty that people have to go back to galleries? (it happened already certainly) Could this secondary market becomes so s**tty that the sellers, the artists will choose more the buyers and my choice will be again limited? To me, art is maybe a commodity but not a market share...Ohterwise, it's only and just paper...with the value of a sheet of paper...

Flipping Art • The Debate, by rolyateel on Aug 7, 2007 16:11:05 GMT 1, I think the selling of prints is inevitible. I've sold 3, but 2 were sold at almost cost (2 of Amp's Kwan prints - to one forum member), and the other was Applause.
I bought all 3 with the intention of framing & hanging them. In the end I framed one Kwan print - which is still on my wall - and was lucky enough to get a Micallef JD which was even bigger than applause - haven't got space for both, so sold Applause.
You then have to figure in the fact that tastes change...in a couple of years I may not want certain images on my wall - do I keep them in a folder or sell them so they can be framed & hung?
I think most peoples problem is when something sells out immediately & is then touted on here within 48 hours.
To those of you who buy it to sell it straight away (for whatever reason - money or "love of art" ) I have this message....
just stick it on fucking ebay & be done with it. Don't clog this forum with threads touting you wares to the poor sods who are still unhappy at missing out - it just rubs salt in the wounds & gets everyones back up.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by dgb133 on Aug 7, 2007 16:16:59 GMT 1, I rcently noticed a gallery was selling a Judgement Day at 4000 GBP! What's the difference between a "gallery selling a 300 pound print for 12x it's retail price than someone here? hmmm...
That turns me off from that gallery entirely, it's disappointing to realize that galleries are often no better than scalping scum.
I have no problem with reselling stuff for a profit. Just as long as it's not insulting - just as long as you don't tell people you will only accept offers higher than the record price AND tell them they have to pay the paypal fees and or you list something for sale before you even have it in your possesion.
