Ok. I have more specific information about the trip now. While in London I will be staying at a flat on St. John Pl. in Clerkenwell...would love any local suggestions regarding that area specifically.

How the Paris Beltway Became a Bit More Colorful


Street art is hitting the road in Paris. Literally.

The German street artist 1010 just painted his largest work ever on the asphalt of the city’s beltway, the infamous Boulevard Périphérique, dubbed in Paris “le Périph.”

The artist, who recently has been painting “trompe-l’œils” (optical illusions) on walls around the world, worked for almost a week with two assistants on a short stretch of the Périph from which traffic is currently diverted.

He painted a crater 120 meters long and around 30 meters wide with alternating layers of bright colors and darker shades to give the illusion of a gaping hole in the ground.

“I like to play with the perceptions of human beings,” said the 36-year-old artist while painting the asphalt on the side of a roaring four-lane motorway Monday afternoon. “Sometimes we think something is static but it’s not. If you change the perspective you see it in a different way.”

Even though the sheer size of the project makes it exceptional, the painting will be seen by only a few people from the tallest buildings in the area and even fewer lucky ones who will fly over the area in helicopters. Still, both 1010 and Paris gallerist Mehdi Ben Cheikh, who is behind the project, expect the artwork to become a milestone in the history of street art.

“Plenty of people will see pictures of it –like the images you just shot with your iPhone—it will be online, it will spread very fast,” 1010 said.
