I don’t think you can acquire that much wealth in Russia without your hands in the state’s pockets (and also Putin’s blessing -even if implicit). There is a reason we speak of oligarchs and not “just” billionaires. The “Leonids” own the largest luxury retailer in Russia, you couldn’t have built that kind of empire without some “arrangements”. There is also information online that hints to corruption but I guess you could only call it that if there was a functioning, non-corrupt judiciary in Russia.
The Leonids are not on the sanctions list so whether Philipps should be boycotted, I am not sure. They have condemned the war and taken measures to help Ukraine. Though it’s easy to cop out once the suitcases are filled. It doesn’t however absolve them of the criticism of how they acquired their wealth in the first place. I also said that I don’t believe they could have built the empire they built without certain arrangements (corruption, Putin’s consent etc). Now the world is starting to look at people that got obscenely rich after the dissolution of the USSR. So for those that think they can (that have most or enough of their assets outside of Russia and maybe not matter enough to be in fear for their lives) it’s not a genius move to now distance oneself from the war and Putin in order to not lose business everywhere except in Russia.
Considering also how art lends itself to laundering money I can see why this is an especially sensitive area.
