Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by morrissey1 on Apr 7, 2008 6:03:52 GMT 1, Hotel Newton.....upper west side.....small rooms (of course)....recently renovated...close to central park, in walking distance to many great points of interest ....and the last time I stayed there, a couple years ago, was less than $100 per night. Very clean, very nice staff....worth looking into.

I'd agree with that, I recently stayed the Wellington on 7th Avenue/55th Street, very good location for the usual tourist spots but I think I paid about ยฃ80 a night for a little pit of a room. I think that any hotel in NYC just doesn't have the time to be refurbished and as they're busy 365 days a year.
I wouldn't worry too much though as there's so much to see and do you'll spend very little time in your hotel!

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by pauljunk on Apr 7, 2008 16:24:26 GMT 1, I recently stayed at the Union Square Inn. www.unionsquareinn.com/ It's clean, quiet, small and cheap. This place is primo access to all the subway lines.
While you are in NYC I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking the L train 1 stop into brooklyn and getting off at the Bedford metro area. This neighborhood is the new grenich village. Fun place to walk around.
Quick question for our U.S friends... I am travelling over to NY for a trip in september and want a place to stay quite central if possible. Has anyone got any tips, guest houses or hotels where i could stay which is nice without breaking the bank. Much appreciated... J

I lived in NYC for a few years, IN MIDTOWN as well as Chelsea and think it's amongst the best areas you could be. You can literally walk anywhere in Manhattan in 20 mins.
The W Holtels are very decent and sometimes you may be able to get a room for $150 - $200 which is very good for NYC. One is located right on Time Sq andthe other in Union Sq, further downtown, but also a great area, within 10 mins walk from the Village, Soho etc. My favourite thing to do there, was hang in Central Park, it's a very chilled vibe and easy as hell to pick up hot women there, just ask some for directions and within the first several tries you'll most likely get the whole "accent" thing and bob's your uncle. The Chelsea Hotel, mentioned above, has a lot of history, especially concerning artists who stayed/lived there, but it's a bit grotty imo.
Paul's recommendation is also a good one, check out that part of Brooklyn, it's a very happening place!
You'll have a great time! NYC rocks!

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by bobbymeachamjr on Apr 7, 2008 22:55:48 GMT 1, Most new yorkers would avoid midtown (if they could) like it was the plague. If you like being packed like sardines then go for it. Its basically millions of people on the brink of insanity going to/back from work. Visiting times square is a unique experience but I'm not sure about staying there. I would suggest union sq as theres a subway right there that you can take to visit the luxe/historic upper west/east sides (central park), or Grand Central on 42nd st, walk below to soho/chinatown/little italy as well as being adjacent to the hottest 'hood in nyc - the west village and the meat packing district.
oh not sure if anybody mentioned - union sq is the mecca of young Huppies. NYU and its well to do students run that area.

One of the last historic ghettos @ the very end of Brooklyn. Home of the most famous Roller Coaster in the world and Nathans hot dogs. Experiencing a tourist revival. Still very dirty and still quite dangerous!

If you want to stay REAL cheap and since we're on an art message board, go for the Carlton Arms not too far from the Gramercy area, right off 3rd avenue. Every room was designed by a different artist and the place is insane inside.
Get a room with a private bathroom though... they have ones with shared, which can be a whole different experience.

Haha! Coney Island is as safe as any other neighborhood in NY. Now East New York on the other hand...
In all seriousness...there are tons of places to stay in midtown 34th street to 59th street and most are perfectly fine. I would recommend staying somewhere south of 23rd street. The boutique hotels are fun (Mercer Hotel, 60Thom) and you'll dominate the dollar. I would stay at Hotel Gansevoort, it is on 9th ave and 13th street. You won't be surrounded by American tourists and will be within walking distance of a TON of galleries. The other option would be The Maritime Hotel around the corner from the Gansevoort...both will set you back between $400-$500 a night.

I sayed there 3 times over the last two years. It's quite near everything. You can walk to most places from there. It's on 30th Street between Madison and 5th.
I like it. It's reasonable.
Or.... The pod hotel on the upper eastside. Looks funky. but too far away from most things.
Have fun - it's a great place. I was going to go back for the Dface exhibition in December, but the credit crunch bites hard.

location on The Bowery in east village opposite CBGB's so it is PRIME location
make sure you get a proper room on the second or third floor - the first floor is like a load of small sheds built into a big space - the doors lock and you have your own space but the walls dont go all the way to the ceiling so sound travels very easily..but for $25 what do you expect in central manhattan?
but if you are on a very tight budget then i doubt it can be beaten for price or location

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by thesewalls on Apr 24, 2008 9:58:04 GMT 1, Wooster Street is a great place to start. I mean sh*t, there's an art collective named after it. Head to Canal & Wooster and walk uptown through SOHO...you'll have to do a little prioritizing, as you could spend all day hunting in that hood. (Take the N or 6 train to Canal St).
The Lower East Side (and Alphabet City, which is near by) are other great areas in NYC for graf. Start at 14th street and head north down any streets on the east side of Manhattan...2nd ave, 1st ave, Ave A, B, C, D...go as far as Houston or Delancey. Again, a big area with a lot of gems, so were back to the prioritizing thing.
Faile provides the locations of some of their street works on their website...don't remember how many are in NYC, but it's surely at least one...probably also in SOHO or the LES.
Space Invader did an NYC Invasion map a while back. if you can get your mitts on it i believe it will be a valuable tool. while i have not seen it myself, it's safe to say he chose some 'respectable' locations in the realm of street art. in turn, you will no doubt find other treasures along the way. he also has a good handful of mosaics (some done within the last few months) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which is where Failes studio is located. Take the L train to the first stop in Brooklyn (Bedford Ave) and start walking against traffic (yes, on Bedford). Look to your right on N.5th street for an old warehouse loading dock covered with 6 Hits & Crashes. Back on Bedford, between N.5th and 4th, there's an Invader mosaic on the right side of the street, sandwiched between the coffee shop and the bookstore. Take a right on N.4th and walk 2 blocks. Turn left on Wythe and there's another big garage door covered with art - this door has been in several street art/graffiti publications. In general, Williamsburg is an amazing place for graffiti and street art! Faile, Swoon, Dain, Armsrock, Obey, etc....wheat-pasts all over the place, and huge pieces on factory's left and right. The bigger graf spots are in the north-western sector of Williamsburg - an industrial area till recently - and as a guideline you should start at Berry & N.12 and circle your way around the blocks.
If you have a car head up to the Bronx, which is LEGENDARY for its extreme amounts of some of the best graf in the world! However, as noted above, I would not take the train and walk around, as it's a big area where you will get lost and run into people who enjoy taking advantage of UFOs (out-of-towners).
OK I've spent enough time on this at the moment...you'll do just fine, have a blast, and if you're only spending one day wake your aasssss up early! Oh yeah, I almost forgot, if there's time hit up DUMBO, Brooklyn...quite plentiful over there. Haha if you want, PM me and you can hire me as a tour guide/consultant. Happy trails my friend!
