Damien Hirst • The Currency Unique Prints, by Hubble Bubble on Dec 22, 2022 16:50:15 GMT 1, Mine has arrived and, I have to say, I'm happier with it than I thought I would be. My memories of it from the show weren't too strong but, as a unique signed print of 1000, I wanted to take the risk and was lucky enough to get one.
First impressions are that it is mahussive... way bigger than I'd remembered. A real wall filler. Framing will be a consideration that I'll have to ponder.
It's also vibrant, fun and good quality. The paper isn't as glossy as I remember it and the low gloss seems to somehow fit the fun of the spots. Just my opinion.
I'm pleased with my signature... it's clearly a Hirst and well positioned.
Yes, there were a few dinks in one of the edges at a particular part of the roll. They are, however, all but invisible from the front (pics below show a dink from the back and the print from the front) and I'm positive they will flatten. The dinks are disappointing but, for me, in no way affect my appreciation of the piece. I understand that others might not have been so lucky (if you can count receiving a slightly damaged print as being lucky).
So... just a short appraisal there. See for yourself in the pics below...

Damien Hirst • The Currency Unique Prints, by Horatio Nelson on Dec 22, 2022 18:41:36 GMT 1, I love the fact that everyone has a view on these Unique Prints.
Right now it is like a glass of lemonade has just been poured and we are waiting for the fizz and froth to calm down.
Having taken delivery of mine and had a good stare at it at the framer's this morning, I think subjectively it is a great piece of art. Superficially, it's a celebration of colour and form nodding to other works in Hirst's oeuvre and it really is a statement piece. It may not work in a cramped living room in a 1 bed flat, but I can imagine it looking awesome in the right spaces - think hallways, hotel lobbies, reception rooms, or above a bed/long sofa.
Beyond that, it poses lots of interesting questions in a tongue in cheek way: is bigger always better for art? Is uniqueness better than uniformity of image in an edition/series? To what extent can you create a (valid) new work based solely on the image of an existing work? Could these become even more sought after than the original (but significantly smaller) paintings, given their size and scarcity (1,000 vs 5,149) despite the traditionally inferior medium of print vs painting? I also think the work is meant to be deliberately overwhelming in size to challenge the collector/viewer - even though the imagery is harmless if not pleasant, it's not necessarily meant to be a comfortable viewing experience, like so many of Hirst's other works.
It will be fascinating to see how these are viewed in the medium to long term.

The tubes / lids are flimsy at best and the ‘prints’ were packed in a way that allowed them to just slide up and down in the tube.

Damien Hirst • The Currency Unique Prints, by blurp on Dec 23, 2022 13:49:31 GMT 1, It's not for a fine art print. Total own goal here.
Mine arrived….with a bit of damage to the tube and print. It’s minimal, but I don’t think acceptable for a $1k print. Reached out to Heni, hoping it gets resolved.

Seems like the prints slipping so far, and damage, could have been caused by some pretty rough handling.

Print is banged in on the edges, not the worst but not acceptable. Not saying it's the couriers "fault" but really these would have to be thrown around and stepped on with very little care to be as damaged as they are.

Over the years, Heni has been issue free in terms of arriving safely with about a dozen purchases. Unwrapped the print and found a bunch of creases. Not trying to be picky; they’re light, but it’s a $1k print, not a poster🤷🏻♂️. How did your print turn out; just the tube damaged or print as well?

It’s embarrassing for any gallery who can’t put a grands worth of print in a ‘bomb proof’ tube correctly to stop any chance of this happening. Very poor indeed!
