Jose Parla Pirate Alphabet #3, by Heavyconsumer on Sept 26, 2008 2:39:23 GMT 1, I would love one of these, but sadly the people looking to sell have all asked me for waaaay more than I'm prepared to pay (which is fair enough imo). That's a nice photo of it too.
Personally I don't think it's worth more than half your asking price (at the most), but even then, that's more than I'd pay for one. That said, I hope you get whatever you want for it, as I'm sure whoever can spare the cash will end up with a thing of beauty, which will give them pleasure for some time.
I can't help but wonder whether these are in some way disappointing up close?? Because it seems odd that from an edition of only 20, more than half have at some point been offered for resale in only a few months since their release. As stated I think they look teriffic on screen and I would love to get my grubby hands on one, but can't afford to write off that sort of cash on a print, sadly. If money were no object I'd have one, along with some of his original work!

I've got to admit, I think the Bonhams estimate is pretty low too. There's not too much Parla work around, especially pieces at prices of sub£8,000 or so. I think the estimate has been set low to generate interest. Just a hunch, but I reckon it should make closer to double that estimate.

Jose Parla Pirate Alphabet #3, by manty on Sept 26, 2008 6:07:11 GMT 1, I think its crap (am i allowed to say that?)
I like some of the originals though
I dont 'get' these scriggles
My 5 year old had to dip snails in food colouring and let them wander around some a4 paper, then the snail was picked up, dipped in another food dye colour and left to wander around the bit of paper again ( its odd what kids have to do in Aussie schools)
When he brought home the bit of paper it reminded me a little of Parla, though nowhere near as good obviously ;-)

Jose Parla Pirate Alphabet #3, by Winter on Sept 26, 2008 7:39:48 GMT 1, Without wishing to sound too pretentious Parla's origianl work is full of energy where these seem lifeless. As a print these are ok and worth owning as they are by Parla but I wouldn't spend too much on one.

Jose Parla Pirate Alphabet #3, by Cocteau 101 on Sept 26, 2008 8:52:50 GMT 1, I've got one of these and no-one will pick them up cheap - pure and simple. I think owning these isn't just about the print quality but a degree of commitment to the artist that is already out of most peoples price league. They may be a totally different type of work to the watercolours and the canvasses but in 20 years time could be seen as highly prized pieces of Parlas work not down to the quality (which in fact is good if a little flat) but the sheer scarcity of his work. The guy is going places make no mistake.

Jose Parla Pirate Alphabet #3, by keysersoze on Sept 26, 2008 18:44:27 GMT 1, Some of you guys are funny....
pfffffffft - if you think it is going to go for just the estimate at Bonhams you're nuts.
heavyconsumer - you seems bitter. On one hand you dog the print, but then also say you want one. And no offense, no one cares what you think it is worth - the market decides that. As they say, you have to pay to play sometimes.
Regardless what you think of the print(s) - the simple fact is Parla's work is so scarce and in huge demand. Even if you have a suitcase full of cash it doesn't mean you can just go out and get one. And lastly, in years time these prints will be desirable because there are so very few of them, he doesn't plan on doing anymore, and his residency at Whitworth obviously has been part of his progression as an artist.

For your comment to have any merit you need to substantiate the thinking behind it, no one, especially me is going over the top about Parla. I think his growing rep is credible and based on a body of work that is maturing and will soon obtain wider reconition from a much wider critical audience than just followers of this genre and these boards. I for one am a believer in his talent and so to support it makes sense to me, I may be wrong in the long run about his future career and his place in art history but I am mesemerised by a lot of his work and can see many links to other types of art I have admired throughout my interest in art. As a result meteoric rises in prices don't mean a great deal to me, I've got in relatively early and can bear the cost to be able to have pieces by an artist I am genuinely passionate about. Nothing gushing or over the top about that in my opinion. Be interested in your more considered response. admireatearlyrin the last tfo.

If you think I was "dogging" the print, you are mistaken (can't really see why you would think that). For the record I think it's lovely and, as stated previously many times, I would very much like one. I probably am a little bitter, not towards Ricosg in any way shape or form, but because I had 6 guys try to flip this to me for 10 times cost within 3 weeks of them buying it. So yeah, it gets my goat a little that they managed to buy it and I didn't know about it until it was too late - but hey, it happens!
Regarding value, it had become a topic of conversation in the thread and I simply added my own thoughts. I know of 2 that have gone privately for $3500, but as you say, we'll see what happens at auction, it will be interesting to see how bidders value it.

Jose Parla Pirate Alphabet #3, by Zippy on Sept 26, 2008 20:42:49 GMT 1, Its a lovely looking print but compared to the other Parla work we have been priveleged to see, it doesnt quite stand up. But, that is because its a print and not an original. However, I would love to have one and if I did, it wouldbe on the wall and not hidden away. Its a very difficult piece to value. Its worth what someone is willing to pay and I feel £1.5-1.75 is a very good price for a seller to achieve in such a short space of time. I wish I knew of its original sale as I would have loved one. But, like many others, I missed out as I wasnt aware and if I choose to buy, I will have to pay what a seller is asking.
Did many people on this forum get one then? obv its not a large run, was never really publicised and so a few pm's must have been sent. Next time, can some kind soul include me on the pm's!
Finally, if anyone is looking to sell or swap one at a reasonable price, I would be interested. thanks for your time, i'm off to get a glass of wine.

I remember when they were available, I passed then and still would now at the original price (although I can't remember what that was). I think Zip is right with the price, I think £1.5-1.75k would be a very good price for a seller.
As a lot of people know, I'm not a big Parla fan but I can understand how people do like his originals though... as a print I think it doesn't translate at all though. But that's just my opinion
