Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by savilerogue on Sept 29, 2008 19:57:31 GMT 1, Did alsblabbar say something? It's hard to decipher his nonsense. Anyway savillerogue, I'll answer your most recent question when you have the good grace to admit that you are wrong, pure and simple.
How about we cut a deal - I'll admit that I'm wrong after you admit that you cannot find any verifiable comment attributed to Banksy/Laz/Pest Control which states that Banksy sees those who 'liberate' street pieces as 'criminals'. I shan't be holding my breath.

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by jam on Sept 29, 2008 20:07:52 GMT 1, Again Jam, I'm not asking him to authenticate street pieces, I have issue with him painting on property that at this point he know will be f**ked with and cause even more damage than just the paint and then call those people criminals but act as though he himself is innocent in the process.
I suppose my position is that he feels if he doesn't legitimize the theft of street pieces by authenticating them, it will lessen the chance people will "cause even more damage" by attempting to steal them. For that reason, I don't find his actions as being ones that are hypocritical as much as proactive.
And I have issue with him telling people to boycott sales. If you don't endorse the sale of street works fine but I think it's hypocrisy to use his media machine to f**k with the sale of other peoples property which they rightfully own. If he doesn't like that other people are selling his street works he should have not painted on property he didn't own.
I would read a bit more into the reason he has asked people to boycott the sale. For me, it is a strong indication one or more pieces included and that had been 'authenticated' by Vermin were actually fake or known to be stolen. Seeing as how there is no basis of expertise on the part of Vermin to qualify themselves as an authentication board, I tend to lean toward the notion the artist has deeper and more reliable knowledge of the pieces in question.

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by snausages on Sept 29, 2008 20:17:00 GMT 1, Finally an intelligent and though out post. Thank you Jam. I see what you're saying but I tend to lean towards the side that Banksy is playing his hand too hard. If he knows that a piece in that auction is fake he should say something and not beat around the bush. But fungle junk in particular I highly doubt is fake and think its a bit sourpuss for him to mess with it. Biting the hands that fed him so to speak. I also find it very contrary for a free spirited artist who lives by the street to be taking such an authoritarian role in the fate of those street works and when he expresses concern for the plight of the property owners I can't help but be completely cynical.
And as for the expertise of vermin, that's a whole nother story but there are a number of people who have been following and documenting this scene for a long time. What makes you think there isn't anyone out there that could be deemed an expert?

I think 'imbecile' is fair comment seeing as I posted this about 20 posts back, regarding your info pulled from (Removed).com:
"Sorry, but an unverified quote pulled from a fairly amateurish looking internet blog that is attributed to "A member of Banksy’s camp" isn't good enough."

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by snausages on Sept 29, 2008 21:09:48 GMT 1, Fine then, that's all you had to say instead of calling me childish names just say you think (Removed) is bogus. If it's not good enough for you oh mighty saville rogue then my deepest apologies.
But just an FYI (Removed) has been around awhile and is a pretty respected source of information in the NY street art scene. And if you did your own f**king research like I told you to do you might alos have realized that this statement was also picked up by such varied news outlets as www.gqmagazine.co.uk/Daily_News/default.aspx?sid=52824 and www.thefirstpost.co.uk/people,1138,banksy-stops-people-making-money-from-his-grafitti,34386 and many others. But I'm done doing research for you.
So are you saying that "taking them is tantamount to theft" isn't implying that the people who took them are 'criminals?'
Wait. please don't answer that. Please god don't answer that. I'm done arguing with children. But feel free to go on posting your nonsense and insults.

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by Deleted on Nov 18, 2013 10:31:45 GMT 1, Does anyone know if the ones at this sale that went unsold or failed to reach bottom estimate (reserve) and are now showing as sold in their archived sale results (?) actually did sell or was it just Lyon & Turnbull putting on a brave face?.

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by Deleted on Jan 18, 2014 14:23:32 GMT 1, Banksy has today issued another statement with regards to tomorrows auction. www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23560543-details/Banksy%27s+Don%27t+bank+on+it/article.doBanksy's? Don't bank on it Robert Mendick, Evening Standard 26.09.08 Related Articles The graffiti artist Banksy has revealed that millions of pounds worth of works attributed to him are fakes. His admission comes ahead of a London auction of street art said to be by the artist but which he is refusing to authenticate. Five pieces are being sold for a guide price of more than £250,000. In a statement issued through his publicist, Banksy urged buyers to boycott tomorrow's auction. He said: "Graffiti art has a hard enough life as it is - with council workers wanting to remove it and kids wanting to draw moustaches on it, before you add hedgefund managers wanting to chop it out and hang it over the fireplace. "For the sake of keeping all street art where it belongs I'd encourage people not to buy anything by anybody unless it was created for sale in the first place." A body set up by the artist to verify his work has identified 226 falsely attributed pieces in eight months. With his street art alone typically fetching £50,000 a piece, it raises the spectre of a fake Banksy industry worth millions. The record price for one of his works was £288,000 at auction last year. In a little noticed statement, Pest Control, the verification body, warns on its website: "[Banksy] would encourage anyone wanting to purchase one of his images to do so with extreme caution, but does point out that many copies are superior in quality to the originals. "Since the creation of Pest Control in January 2008 we have identified 89 street pieces and 137 screen prints falsely attributed to the artist." The statement adds: "Banksy has a casual attitude to copyright and encourages the reproduction of his work for your own personal amusement, so it's with regret that he finds himself having to deem pieces either 'real' or 'fake'." Banksy paints in secret, making independent identification of his art more difficult, while Pest Control refuses to authenticate any street work which he believes should be left "in situ". Lyon & Turnbull will auction 20 works tomorrow at a deconsecrated church in Marylebone Road. Among the five lots Banksy is refusing to authenticate are the Refuse Rat, expected to fetch £20,000, and Fungle Junk (estimate: £150,000) consisting of three panels painted on to the side of a trailer at the Lizard festival in Cornwall in 1999. The auctioneers have turned, for the first time, to a rival authenticating body, Vermin, which is providing a "free and independent authentication and certification service, dedicated to cataloguing Banksy's street works". Each piece will come with a Vermin certificate, judged by a panel of experts drawn from contemporary art dealers. Banksy has refused to approve their role. Ben Hanly, head of contemporary art at Lyon & Turnbull, said: "We are sure these street works are authentic. "It would be absolute madness for us to sell anything we don't believe is genuine. But whether the market agrees with us, we shall see." ""Banksy paints in secret, making independent identification of his art more difficult, while Pest Control refuses to authenticate any street work which he believes should be left "in situ".""
Should Banksy authenticate everything regardless of where the art ends up eventually?
