Sorry anthoz It was very odd this year. I entered everything last year and didn't get a sniff of anything. I entered everything this year $6.5k and below and 'won' three.
I really don't know how the fairq system works, but I would think that the odds of me winning three are pretty high. As others have won multiples, it makes me think that this random process isn't quite so random, or at least the algorithm may be a little out.
As I stated in a previous thread, I'm not a big fan of any process that isn't 100% transparent. While I am absolutely not implying any impropriety on the part of Faile or fairq here, these multiple wins are a little odd.

i agree with your sentiments, and im glad brett has found a decent home....lucky git anyway i suppose im being a bit bitter seen as though i won a piece. I do think that the challenger is the most over priced piece though. I wouldnt flip mine even if i could make money off it but i dont believe these are hand finished, if thats the case its a lot of $$$ for a simple screen, even if it is an ed. of 24 (X4) anyone care to shine any light on the challenger piece or have any pics of the first edition? thanks guys and well done to all

Faile/FairQ Update, by Gentle Mental on Jul 3, 2008 15:44:50 GMT 1, i suspect multiple entry in a certain combination might have a chance of hitting mulitple wins... there might be a "combination" enabling one to win 3 to 4 with just one account - and a high number of people in this forum selected this combination (unintentionally, i'm sure) and had 3 to 4 in row win...
it's just the way this dice rolled....

Faile/FairQ Update, by achtungbono on Jul 3, 2008 15:55:30 GMT 1, ideally, if the matchs is correct, then every entry for a certain print should not be weighted with reference to anything else in the lottery in terms of applicants or prints
i.e. each print lottery is a unique event
thats the key here - unrelated event probabability
winning 3 seperate unrelated events is literally a roll of the dice - each lottery is a new and unique event
if there are 3 lotteries, each with say 1000 entrants, then the statistical likelyhood for each one is 1:1000
you enter 4, then you have 4 distinct sets of 1:1000 chances, nothing else
the best anaolgy would be trying to book a flight on say LUfthansa, the day after one of their planes crashed into a hillside- you may THINK you have a very low chance of something going wrong after the horror of the previous day ( which s correct ) but the previous flights crash is an irrelevance statistically ( assuming there is no related problem such as bad fuel etc )

Although, as you say, they're independent events and so winning one doesn't effect winning the next you still have to multiply the two probabilities together to get the joint probability. Two rolls of a dice are independent and the odds of rolling two sixes are 1/6 x 1/6, so 1/36.
It's been a while but I reckon the chances of winning 3 out of 10 entered, assuming 1000 folk entered and there was 12 of each print, would be 12/1000 x 12/1000 x 12/1000 x (988/1000)^7, or 1 in 629,734 i.e. pretty remote.
Considering multiple folk won 3 then I reckon one would have to think that either far less than 1000 entered for each print or things weren't quite random.

Faile/FairQ Update, by Deleted on Jul 3, 2008 16:22:38 GMT 1, Hey guys,
That's correct, each event is completely independent of the other. The system uses a random number generator to pick winners. It really is a name in the hat type system in that when you join a Q, you are assigned a number. When the Q ends, the system will randomly pick a set of numbers (depends how many winners the Q owner ie Faile wants to pick) and notify the winners and losers with the customized messages. This process is handled completely independent of other Qs.
The fact that people won several Qs is quite possible as you also have to consider that there may not be as many people in some of the Qs so the chances of winning increases. There is NO system or pattern in how winners are chosen.
Oh, the reason why the times were getting extended is because the system picks winner in a batch process meaning that it will pick winners when resources are available. I think a lot of people were hammering the site, the system doesn't have enough resource to pick the winners. But, the important part is that people are no longer able to join the Q after the end time.
We'll publish stats in a bit.

I wouldn't mind betting at those odds

Faile/FairQ Update, by angryboy on Jul 3, 2008 16:32:05 GMT 1, If that's the case I'm guessing that what's happened is the high (compared to a £2500 market price banksy released at £500) prices have puts lots of folk off then and not as many folk have entered as would have if the prints were cheaper.

Faile/FairQ Update, by Billy Sport on Jul 3, 2008 17:28:27 GMT 1, hey all,
ive created a thread on the ebay page for people looking to trade their prints, im hoping people will list what they won and what they are after. (I'd also hope that if there is any difference in pricing that the difference would be the same post lottery).
Not looking to profit or sell on, just trying to match you up (and me up) with the prints you want.
hopefully that will help as reading 10 pages is getting confusing.

nevertheless, it is statistically quite perverse, almost, that there are so many multiple winners, eg winning 3 of 10, whilst at the same time so many who entered 20 and got zip....statistically extremely remote
