I'm not saying mine is 100% right but even taking into account unique chances your best odds will be on the last print drawn but the chances are only 1/57000 instead of 1/60000 based on 150 prints and 20 tickets each with 60000 sold

POW Open Day • 2008, by robinbanks on Dec 8, 2008 0:49:28 GMT 1, As far as working out the odds goes I'm pretty sure richy00 is (sort of) right (not sure where he's plucked 60,000 from though).
If my memory of GCSE maths serves me right it has something to do with each drawing of a ticket being an independent event.
To simplify: if there were 10 tickets in the hat and you had 2 of them your chances wouldn't be 2/10, or 1/5. You would have a 1/10 chance and then a 1/9 chance.
So if say there are 10,000 tickets in total and you have 20 then you have 20 1/500ish chances.

First, there were 8000 tickets sold yesterday. It's speculated that 10000 total tickets were sold so work off the 10K number.
The difference is between whatever you googled and what is accurate is again you are not taking into account that the wins are based on unique entries essentially disqualifying 70% of the entries in the pool (again assuming 70% were multiple entry). Scenarios like this are why statistics studies are continued through collage.
Your pool of eligible winners is not every ticket purchased but the number of unique entries you need to base the formula off of and that number is purely speculative. I am working off 30%.
The basic formula is total number of outcomes divided by the total number of possible outcomes. Because it is POW will not award someone winning more than once in the outcome, all duplicate entries past the first entry should not be considered in the total number of possible outcomes.
Actually lets make this a bit easier to explain, regardless of the total number of tickets sold, there are 3000 individuals eligible to win a print. Divide that by the number of available prints and you get 1 out of 20 of those folks will get a print. Your odds are 1 in 20.
Side note, the probability of having your ticket being drawn is about .01% if you bought 1, and .2% if you bought 20 based on 10,000 tickets not includng exclusion of duplicate entries and number of prints. That's per draw and there are 151 total draws.

POW Open Day • 2008, by rosstierney on Dec 8, 2008 1:07:45 GMT 1, it's only roughly possible to figure out the odds for the first draw
the odds for the other draws are impossible to figure out because you'd never know how many tickets the first winner bought or each winner after that (you would need to cancel out the rest of their tickets because you can only win once) though it is safe to say your odds increase
working on the first banksy draw & no more than 10,000 tickets sold . . .
to figure out your odds, divide 10,000 by however many tickets you bought
if you bought 20 tickets: 10,000 / 20 = 500 (1/500) if you bought 13 tickets: 10,000 / 13 = 769 (1/769)
good luck everyone

POW Open Day • 2008, by umajets on Dec 8, 2008 1:44:02 GMT 1, Here's a pic of the Thomas painting
The stencil on show at the lottery stall
One of the friendly pow staff working at the stall
The screen printer hard at work
The signature on one of the Banksy photos.
I bought 4 of the Thomas postcards - if any members who couldn't make it to the open day want one, PM me and I'll send it to them, no cost (unless they live very far away ) Arcam, you've got first refusal - if you want one , let me know.
EDIT: that's all the postcards accounted for. Cheers guys.
Cheers Tim

POW Open Day • 2008, by uglyiq on Dec 8, 2008 1:44:47 GMT 1, ...leaving the maths to one side for a minute (never a bad plan after a long weekend)
How many ENTRANTS in each 'draw' - 1500 Banksy 1000 Beth 300 Love (approx of course but I'm erring on the high side) How many PRIZES in each - 151
Whatever the mathematical odds and probabilities are for your individual ticket being pulled at any particular time surely the fact remains that there will be 151 winning banksy tickets from a total of 1500 applicants
(an applicant being someone - who can only win once - who filled in at least 1 banksy ticket)
mathematically this is no doubt b***ocks but can't logically see the flaw
PS Anyone willing to give me odds on POW not actually 'selling' all the 150 lovemakers through the lottery and that they end up online or elsewhere ? ie There won't be 150 applicants who 'accept' the offer of a £500 lovemaker print on Tuesday

POW Open Day • 2008, by collector on Dec 8, 2008 2:07:39 GMT 1, Sorry to ask, but could you possible win the opportunity to buy all 3 prints (if they picked your name out of each box) or will they limit it to just one of the 3. If the later, would they give you the choice? For example if you got the email to say its a Micallef, is it worth holding on just in case it was the Banksy later on. Not that I think this will be a dilemma I will be facing come Wednesday.

I wasn't able to go down to POW this weekend because I have been (and am STILL!) doing an essay up here at Uni! Being a big Insect fan I would absolutely LOVE any of his paste-ups, or even a postcard of some kind! I can't imagine anyone buying those and already wanting to sell them, but IF that is the case for anyone PLEASE let me know and I would GLADLY take them off your hands to decorate my room up here!
Thanks,
A

POW Open Day • 2008, by thetruth55 on Dec 8, 2008 5:07:34 GMT 1, This is a hilarious read. Statistics aside, how many tickets were sold, yadda yadda yadda....nobody has even taken into account how many tickets will be lost/stomped on/treated like the 1/1 NOLA being duct-taped to the wall before the actual drawing takes place. For those of you that bought 20 tickets, have you even considered the realistic chance that not all of your 20 tickets will even make it in the "plastic jug" of this prehistoric lottery system? And besides, as well as some of you are able to do math, it would amaze me if you could even spell your name and write your email address correctly on 20 separate occasions. ;D
