Guardian article on POW Scandal, by jp on Sept 25, 2007 9:43:14 GMT 1, The cynic in me says that POW have made up some of this in order to crash prices.... "Banksy said: “They say it’s better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody, but I don’t think that applies to art prints. If it turns out that limited editions have not been limited in edition then I sincerely apologise. This is particularly unfortunate for the people who buy my work to flip it for a quick profit on eBay, as I wouldn’t want to affect their mark-up.” " And it looks like mr 21st-century-tortoise is no longer an ebay user..... the plot thickens. Either way, it takes the piss and shows them up as the jokers they really are.
Do you really think POW would say something like this to crash prices? Their reputation is seriously being questioned. If the police are going to be involved, people could go to jail over these charges. It's actually very serious.

I've waited up to a month before and on several occasions have simply not had a response at all. Most ebay auctions last a week. Even if you email as soon as a listing goes up the odds of receiving a reponse back from POW prior to the auction ending are negligible

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by sausageboonwee on Sept 25, 2007 9:52:03 GMT 1, I think one of the big problems is that everything is done online. I think it's amazing that the market hasn't been flooded with fakes already given the amount of money involved. A similar thing happened with Warhol and there was a panel established to authenticate (which has caused problems in itself). Stamps are nice but a bit primative. There needs to be a hologram on the back of the print or something. If Frankie can produce a wax seal certificate then POW should make more effort also.

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by jam on Sept 25, 2007 9:58:17 GMT 1, Ladies and Gentlemen
During a recent article about buying art on Ebay allegations were made by the Arts Newspaper concerning the integrity of a handful of Banksy prints produced by POW. We would like to assure you that this is a matter of utmost seriousness to us and a full investigation is currently underway.
The manufacture and sale of prints on POW is an extremely accountable process. All screenprints are produced in-house under secure conditions and strictly to the edition number stated. The personal details of every purchaser are recorded on a database which is used to discourage 'flipping' and to provide provenance to interested parties on future generations of sale. We believe our security systems to be fully comprehensive and reliable. Should you have any concern about the number or provenance of a print do not hesitate to contact the office at the below address.
Please note that these allegations affect only Banksy prints and at the present time nobody has come forward to POW to inform us of any concerns.

I've always found Dora to be pretty good and she's generally got back to me the same day. Just the luck of the draw I suppose.
With all the nonsense over the last week this article really is a nice thick juicy layer of icing on the cake.
Mind you, if it is only signed, stamped but unumbered you should as a purchaser be fairly sure if you have a case or not.
I do remember a number of signed, stamped but unnumbered Applause prints not so long ago...anyone buy one?

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by jam on Sept 25, 2007 10:07:37 GMT 1, They just updated their page:
WHAT IS POW? POW was founded by a loose collection of alcoholics and show-offs that felt they were too underground (meaning not good enough) to be embraced by the proper art world. They set up their own production facility in an East London s**t-hole from where prints could be produced and sold direct over the internet without the usual art world sham, snobbery and mark-up.
SO WHAT? Every new art movement likes to think it's radically different from the one that came before, and this one is no different - apart from the fact it isn't very different. Well not the art anyway - what makes this movement ground breaking is the audience. It's you.
Art used to be crap. Throughout history you had to come from a relatively priveleged background in order to produce it, you needed to be practically minor royalty in order to own it and Jesus was always trying get his mug in the frame. Even little Brit Art needed a millionaire media mogul to nurse it into life.
However, the arrival of glorious saint Internet means you no longer need to live in a Manhattan loft and know the right people to be in on the action, all you need is a few hours at a computer and the research skills of a broken fridge magnet. Artists now publish their work for free, find an audience and sell their wares without anybody else's help or permission.
Whatever you choose to call this stuff (not 'post graffiti' please) the vast number of you that photograph it, collect it, trade it, hang it up and slag it off are making this the first genuinely democratic art form. It's you lot that make this art relevant and it's you lot that is breaking new ground, so put the kettle on and give yourselves a round of applause.
WHO CAN YOU TRUST? The manufacture and sale of prints on POW is in fact an extremely accountable process. All screen prints are produced in-house under secure conditions and strictly to the edition number stated. The personal details of every purchaser are recorded on a database which is used to discourage 'flipping' and to provide provenance to interested parties on future generations of sale. We have deliberately not increased the sale price of work by popular artists out of some vague sense of loyalty to the average joe and we make every effort to ensure our security systems are entirely comprehensive and reliable.
Should you have any concern about the number or provenance of a print contact the office at: enquiry@picturesonwalls.com

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by bonesy on Sept 25, 2007 11:08:57 GMT 1,
The new statement still includes this lie.
It has been known forever that POW prints up extra prints. Folks have defended this action saying it is to replace "damages"- but then other folks have reported seeing STACKS of prints at POW or the Ghetto well after damages should have all been replaced. I have ridiculed this forever, its been a problem waiting to happen.
Everyone here knows that prints are not produced "strictly to the edition number stated". Other print houses do not print up "extra" prints to replace damages, they set aside a percentage for damages or take great care in shipping (like BRP) and then do not have to replace the large volume POW does. POW dose not wrap the print in kraft paper, they dont secure the end-caps, until a year ago there was no tissue paper. They ship our beloved prints with no care because they have piles of replacements. Them sticking to their statement produced "strictly to the edition number stated" sums up their shadiness because everyone here knows that this is not true, there is no defending the statement.
I personally have never purchased a POW print off of ebay so I know my prints are good but no doubt this is going to hugely effect the secondary market. Ive ridiculed the "extra" prints for so long because the integrity of the print run should be first and foremost. These problems have been a long time coming.
(and I thought you British folks were uptight about provenance before this whole fiasco.......)

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by klaxon on Sept 25, 2007 11:17:31 GMT 1, If ebuyers did indeed ask for provenance from certain people at Pow (after advice from sellers), then not only have they bought backdoor prints in the first place, they have then been lied too by someone inparticular regards provenance of the prints. POW's rep could take a serious hit because 2 or 3 people have conspired to act fraudently it appears.
Remember, this is just an allegation so far. Nothing is proven and everyone is innocent until proven guilty.
The fact there is a whistlerblower is interesting. Were POW onto them? Is that the reason for the banksy delay? Perhaps they were building a case against whomever did this. That in itself is reassuring. or did they only tag on after a guilty feeling conspirator blew the whistler.
very very interesting.... I can see jail sentences should someone be found guilty. this isn't small fry.
