Guardian article on POW Scandal, by sorl on Sept 25, 2007 12:30:05 GMT 1, i also, getting a new stamp - i don't reckon it's as simple as it might seem to get a duplicate stamp done just like the POW one. piss easy. if you work there i'm sure the pc's aren't all password protected. get a copy of the artwork that was originally sent to the stamp manufacturer. order a new copy out of hours. probably the most important but also easiest part of the whole thing.
fair point! still reckon this might run deeper than people want to believe...

There are people that have said they have gotten "unstamped" prints stamped by POW (shady as hell). There are also stories of people getting damaged prints (months after the print was purchased) replaced by POW, again shady as hell. The shadiness is endless......

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by sham69 on Sept 25, 2007 12:35:53 GMT 1, Again, let's have a bit of empathy here. There'll be those people out there that make up the 100 or so that are currently oblivious to what's going on. Imagine picking up the thread to realise that £6k piece of paper on the wall is worth f*** all. Put the fiasco in context. Potentially, for them there's also no recompense. Anyone bought a car before that turned out to be nicked? Tuff titty is generally the rule of thumb.
Now just have a look at that piece of paper you have hung in the living room and just imagine . . . what if it was me?

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by becksaboo on Sept 25, 2007 12:42:07 GMT 1, I think they should publish a list of some of the prints which they suspect were dodgy, e.g. 5 soup cans, 2 tm etc if only to narrow down the number of speculative emails they get. Great idea. However, that may let the cat out of the bag regarding the extent of the problem
surely honesty would be the best policy from a pr perspective in this case?

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by sorl on Sept 25, 2007 12:46:37 GMT 1, I think everyone should remember the story does not say who is involved, and for all we know it could all be a load of bo**ocks ;D especially coz its in The Guardian
that art newspaper article, which is the original one i guess, says:
“Three junior employees of POW—one of whom has now left to set up another print sales company—distributed unauthorised prints to several people who were asked to sell these on eBay.”
fuq it, i couldn't give a toss to be honest. i just don't really understand why people are trying to deceive themselves about this.

Don't you believe it. Laz will have brought in a PR firm that specialises in crisis management to handle this. While the rule that all publicity is good publicity is true, POW will want to be in control of what gets said to who and when. Witness the quote 'it's no more than 25'. It would be interesting to hear what POW tell those who are genuinely concerned. Anyone fit that description?

Hi William.. your article states that the person who authenticated the soup can could call a specific employee to confirm it as genuine.
The seller of the Soup Can told another eBay user that the print could be authenticated by calling POW and speaking to a specific employee, one of the three involved in the scam.
In the ebay Q&A on the item, it clearly states the persons name that the buyer should call. Are you comfortable with this ?

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by knox on Sept 25, 2007 12:54:06 GMT 1, Having worked for several leading newspapers I can safely say that things don't just get "made up" to give the story credence.
What does happen though is that "reliable" sources can turn out to be anything but and may have a grudge/simply the wrong info which you have been led to believe is factual.

How long before there's loads of new accounts appearing on the forum, watch out for Timesman/Telegraphism/Oberserverboy, all with zero posts and asking for 'soundbites'.

Guardian article on POW Scandal, by dave313perry on Sept 25, 2007 12:55:54 GMT 1, Absolutely no surprise to me what so ever that there are a few back door prints out there - via staff and previous staff
It was inevitable - why work for £8hr when you can ship a couple of spare prints out and net 15k?
Complete blame lies on the doorstep of the people in control - namely Laz and any other directors... There is always going to be spare prints lying around and test prints...etc its the nature of screenprint, but they must take responsibility for the secondary market as it is their products
As for the whole shill bidding saga - I would say that is someone trying to sell their story, no doubt there has been a few cases of this on ebay but they are noticable - and the fact that they never won an auction just nudged the price up - makes it even more unbelievable, chance is at some point they would have won an auction for sure.
Problem for me is from the management side - Iv been discussing the possiblities of similar circumstances with friends and colleagues for ages and all agreed that there will be repercussions due to their lack luster style and lack of acknowledgement of the current prices, a tighten up on security and Edition control should have been called for ages ago - and wasnt
Result - i hope Laz gets taken to the cleaners for neglecting his responsibilties

but surely if banksy/laz have acknowledged the problem and given quotes etc then that's a pretty good confirmation that something is going on...

the press can't just "make stuff up" where allegations of criminal fraud are concerned. remember, they have to get everything cleared by a libel lawyer because they are likely to get sued if they print anything which can't be backed up with serious evidence. this is particularly true of smaller publications like the art newspaper which do not have the resources of a newspaper like the guardian.
