Storing of prints, by Honest Jon on Jan 27, 2006 13:50:36 GMT 1, In art republic in brighton they sugest to keep them flat and not in tubes, me pesonally i have 5 picure frames that i alternate my prints in, with an A1 art folder that has indervidual plastic wallets in it. if u keep them in tubes they get mega curled, i preffer going to POW in person and putting them straight in my art folder, then they never get folded. i find by keeping them in the art folder you can show people them easyer. Id purchase a good one with a ring binder and some plastic wallets, they cost a little but well worth it.

Storing of prints, by bonesy on Jul 10, 2006 21:57:10 GMT 1, Here's my rig for storing prints longterm, that dont make it to my wall. Its a leather portfolio with mylar sleeves and foamcore backing boards. Its pricy for the mylar and foamcore but supposedly it'll preserve the prints forever. Storing in tubes is very bad not only because of curling but if there's thick ink on a screenprint it can cause the paint to peel and flake after awhile.

Storing of prints, by bonesy on Jul 10, 2006 22:43:43 GMT 1, As for framing I usually have my goods custom framed with archival materials UV glass and mylar corners. This is probably my favorite frame job I had done. Its a 2nd edition Trip Or Freak poster framed with 2" black frame, gold spike framing spacer, black matte, and gold fillet. The framer hooked me up or else it woulda cost a fortune.

Storing of prints, by foundation on Jul 11, 2006 8:17:19 GMT 1, I have gone down the A1 folder / acid free plastic and card insert route too, it has worked very well for me, looks after the prints better and looks much better than a stack of tubes. Most of my prints are on the wall but those that aren't are well cared for.

Ive never seen the acid free card in person to be honest, so I really cant say... I would guess it would work assuming it is thick enough and it is archival for the long term.

"gold spike framing spacer" ahhhh, now that sounds like a good idea ;D Do you know of anyone online that sells it? Does it just come on a roll and you cut it to the lengths you want?
Thanks ;D

Storing of prints, by bonesy on Jul 11, 2006 15:07:28 GMT 1, Sorry, dont know of anywhere online for spiked spacers. For a specialty item like this or fillets (the thin gold b/w the matte and print in the pic) Id swing by a custom framer and see if they can sell you some and cut it for you too. Or you can drop the cash and have them frame it altogether.

Storing of prints, by foundation on Jul 12, 2006 8:00:59 GMT 1, Hi retep101, there is an ebay art supplier who sells good quality A1 ring bound art folders and A1 acid free sleeves, the folder was about 25 quid the sleeves were about a ten spot for 6, each sleeve is double sided, so its really how many sleeves you buy will limit your capacity. Not had any problems and it feels very sturdy.

Storing of prints, by foundation on Jul 12, 2006 13:31:10 GMT 1, Try this: stores.ebay.co.uk/Niks-Naks
If not then just search for A1 art folders, the seller has a name like iwvshoddy05, they can sort you out with folders and plastic acid free sleeves for your stuff.

Storing of prints, by RBK on Nov 20, 2006 6:55:08 GMT 1, I'm so confused... Please help me out. I have under 10 prints I'd like to properly store. Please pretend I know nothing and start from the beginning.
- Should I put them in those mylar plastic sleeves or not? - Assuming I should put them in sleeves, do you recommend the backing? - And where in the US could I get one of those ringed portfolios once my prints are in sleeves with backing?

Backing is best, just for that added security that your prints won't get bent by some freak accident.
You could order them online, I think bonesy has posted some links on here before. Or you could go to an art/architecture store, they should have those huge portfolios. If you lived in Los Angeles, I could tell you where, but alas, you don't.

Storing of prints, by absyrd on Feb 25, 2007 2:29:41 GMT 1, I've been using bagsunlimited for a while and they are pretty effecient. Supposedly their poly bags are top notch. I recently got a 10 pack of the 31x42" 4mm mylar for some of my new larger prints and they seemed to have a bit of an oily something near the bottom seal, though. Still can't figure out what it is.
The one thing I'm still confused about is how to keep the prints from sliding to the bottom of the sleeve.

Use large self adhesive acid free corners by 3m/Scotch. Stops em sliding about.

Storing of prints, by notitle on Apr 3, 2007 16:35:31 GMT 1, if you've a corner somewhere VERY safe, take it out and stand it up on its short ends. it'll be too curly for a while so you want to let it naturally unwrap for a while otherwise it can be terrifying putting into a sleeve.
once you've done that for a while, get someone you trust or don't mind falling out with to help you put it in the portfolio.
then take it out and put it in a frame.

Storing of prints, by hungrig on Apr 3, 2007 18:44:31 GMT 1, my question is then if the prints come from POW in a tube is it relatively easy to get them flat again and put into a portfolio?
In brief, the longer a print has been kept in a tube, the longer it will take and the trickier it will be to get the print flat again. Larger prints are also more difficult to get flat because they have been rolled up more.
If you have a clean table, remove your print from the tube with white cotton gloves (rather than latex surgical ones which can leave a residue on prints). Leave the print on the table so that it can begin to unroll naturally as the fibres in the paper start to relax. This may take just a few hours if you have recently received your tubed print from POW. If you have kept your print in a tube for more than a month, I would give it a few days. [Remember also that POW tubes are not acid-free.]
The temptation to immediately force the print flat by holding it down with objects should be avoided, as this will increase the risk of damage. [It is similar to the risk of pulling a muscle if you start stretching without a proper warm-up.]
Although is safer to have another person assisting you when inserting the print into a portfolio, I tend to do it on my own, with great care and slight trepidation.
Good luck.

Spot on. My Girl Tokyo took ages to flatten because the person I bought it from had kept in the tube since its original purchase. Even now it still has a small kink.
