Storing of prints, by Happy Shopper on May 29, 2021 21:03:07 GMT 1, Stupid question (probably) for members with plan chests. Do they have a sprung metal bar to hold prints flat!? If so, have you removed it to avoid it pressing against and damaging prints!?

Storing of prints, by Winchester on May 29, 2021 21:38:36 GMT 1, Ok! FINALLY my vertical storage has arrived! First order was lost, the second was put on hold due to the bad weather, but I finally got it! Arrived as a big box, 37 pounds, all flat packed. Itโs cardboard obviously so you have to be careful not to damage it, fold it in the wrong ways/spots and not sit with you knee or hand on it. Instructions are clear-ish. You need a bit of understanding of how boxes work and see it first in your mind. Final result is actually very good and sturdy! Again, itโs not metal, itโs cardboard but itโs a great little solution! I DIYโd some fixings by experience with boxes: a) I taped the corners and edges to reinforce them. B) I will put it on some base (likely ikea open bases - will reference it if you need) and add an additional layer of mdf or other cardboard (just in case). I live by the ocean and on ground floor so I get some floor humidity / mold sometimes. C) some humidity absorbent bags + silverfish repellants. Those little feckers love paper and cardboard. Oh, sixe is 47x34x12 inches for 30x42inches drawings max - There are different and smaller sizes. Edit: I will keep my prints in acid free sleeves & glassine paper. Edit 2: Will the folders need backing? Mmh they are quite sturdy but they might bend a bit. If I see that they bend too much against gravity, I'll add a little foam board at the back to reinforce.
That looks like a great option, please keep us updated and let us know if any problems occur.

Storing of prints, by the27 on Feb 19, 2022 6:15:48 GMT 1, Hi guys,
May need some advise on my print. I was storing in the original packaging and do found that thereโs small *dot* on certain area of the print ( looks like oil stain) . May I know if thereโs any change to remove it? Or to avoid should I just frame the print up ?
Thank you in advance.

There are some DIY methods but I would not recommend them personally. Best to be safe and eliminate possible spores before framing. If it does turn out to be as mentioned you could always turn to the artist for advise. I have done this myself in the past. Good luck

Thank you for the reply. Sure will check with some professional framing shop for advise. Just curious , will framing the print prevent all this mark in the future?

If framed by a reputable framer and to a high standard, yes.

If spores then they may very well still be active and could further spread. For example, feeding off the paper and requiring humidity. Or perhaps the spores are dead or not spores at all.
Do you have a photo of the work? What climate would the work be framed in? Expensive work? Earlier comment about going back to the artist or seeking professional advice.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable on here could help more if you could provide more details

Should i keep the poster in the envelope or take it out so the creaseโs wont become weak and rip? Many thanks Hey, Personally it's mainly dependent on if its been opened before, I have a couple, and they stayed in the envelope from day 1, few months ago I took 1 out to photo, it was very good considering the time spent folded, but I wouldn't want to fold it back up now as the movement will just make it worse, so now in a folder. Creasing negligible, but there..to be expected, I wouldn't refold and open for obvious reason, I don't expect the creasing on the folds to change now, If kept folded, just don't put weight on the envelope. I guess my advise, and that's all, only going on my experience, take it out, gently unfold it, and put in a folder, and never fold back up.

Thanks Snoozy for taking the time to reply, yea it has been out the envelope acouple of times already, the folds doesnt look to bad at the moment,I was more thinking of whilst its folded weather that will do any damage, however i am now thinking storing it in a folder does sound like the best idea now, or possibly framing it inc the evelopes etc but not 100% sure how that would work. Either way i dont want to come to it one day and it just falls apart in my hands ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ Is there a โspecialโ folder that i will need or doesnt it really matter? Thanks again Allen

Storing of prints, by sm3gz on Nov 1, 2022 23:28:50 GMT 1, Any update on the best way to flat store prints, to get them out their tubes.
Is there a decent binder on the market to help keep them all in the one place?
or any other ideas.

Storing of prints, by chazawalla on Nov 14, 2022 19:57:33 GMT 1, I just ordered an Itoya poster binder, it says its got black acid-neutral paper inserts in 10 poly sheets... Can the smarter people here confirm that its safe to store prints long-term in this? I've got a few numbered HF screen prints that'll be going in once its shows up.

Not sure of your location, but if UK based, I would recommend talking to Caroline Harrison Conservation, based near Bristol?
I had something that needed flattening, and she was brilliant.
