Storing of prints, by piperson on Apr 22, 2007 10:26:07 GMT 1, I usually wrap my prints in acid free tissue paper before putting into the mylar sleeves. I'm a bit paranoid that the paint/ink will stick to the plastic if it's left for too long... The big drawback to this is that it's not easy to display the picture when you're showing off the collection, but I get around this by taking photo's of each print before archiving.
wish i'd seen this earlier, not with my portfolio at mo and have had them in it for months, how likely is it that they will stick, now bit worried!

Not too likely with screenprints, but inkjets for sure and maybe Giclee could be a problem. But you should consider changing asap.

Storing of prints, by Strange Al on Apr 24, 2007 16:41:12 GMT 1, Viva - in terms of price it really depends on how "nice" a portfolio you want to buy. You should be able to pick up a perfectly reasonable A1 size portfolio for around £25. On top of that you'll need acid free archival sleeves, which will set you back about £3 each. Some people also put tissue in the sleeves to cover the prints and cardboard backing (both acid free) for added protection, which will cost you a little more on top. Though, I don't currently bother with this.
The larger and odd shaped prints (Applause, IFTL, JD) don't fit in an A1 portfolio, which is annoying. So if you're not going to hang them straight away, the best way to store them at home is probably going to be in an AO portfolio. However, the AO porfolios are much more expensive and most aren't made with ring fastners for hanging sleeves (i.e., the artwork simply lies flat inside). Given the size, they're a b++ch to house at home and to look through.
Arguably it makes sense to buy an A0 portfolio, at least it'll fit most size prints you're ever going to buy. Though I'm guessing most people on here will have opted to get an A1 portfolio first (including myself). I'd probably do the same again too.
If you live in london, good places to look are:
Atlantis - www.atlantisart.co.uk/ Cass Arts - www.cass-arts.co.uk/ and London Graphic Centre www.londongraphics.co.uk

Storing of prints, by paulah on Apr 24, 2007 16:55:00 GMT 1, VH As you are on a student budget.... I bought the A1 one from Argos - and I keep my prints in it loose with acid free paper between them - the bits you get free with the print! I keep it flat on the floor under my bed so I don't have to worry about them moving round. Total cost around twelve quid I think! I don't really keep prints in it for years and years - so it seems to work ok. It's a cheap option - probably not the best!

Storing of prints, by Mrs Mouse on Apr 30, 2007 19:23:12 GMT 1, I've just spent 2 weeks sorting all my prints out. Got an A1 folder and some archival quality sleeves from ebay. I found the foam board quite difficult to find, so I went into my local framers and bought some A1 sheets of conservation grade mount board which I have used as inserts in the sleeves to stop the sleeves from bending. It worked out a lot cheaper than foam board. The only downside is that the mount board is quite heavy so when the folder is full it's a bit of a struggle to lift it up. Maybe you big strong chaps wouldn't find it too much of a problem though! ;D I've been a bit worried about the prints slipping so I think I'll get some corners to hold the print in place.

Storing of prints, by senna on May 13, 2007 13:43:10 GMT 1, probably been said, but Atlantis www.atlantisart.co.uk/ has the foam board in all sizes
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT PUT FAILE PRINTS IN A PORTFOLIO WITHOUT ACID PROOF PAPER BETWEEN THE PRINT (image side) & SLEEVE!
with all the spats & heavy paint on most, they WILL stick to the sleave.
& would be sure to clean the inside of the sleeve with alchohol/white spirit if you are putting another print in a sleeve where a Faile used to live.
did that make sense?

Storing of prints, by becksaboo on May 15, 2007 13:08:07 GMT 1, Hi all
after god knows how many emails I’ve sent to numerous retailers enquiring about acid free foam board etc, I’ve had discussions with a couple of stockists who are willing to start stocking some board as I’ve had a nightmare finding suitable stuff over here and the few existing places I did find were ‘specialist’ so prices were really pricey.
I gather it depends on how in demand these things as to whether the retailers choose to permanently stock them or not, so be quick if you need some (or cant be arsed ordering from the states).
Hope this board is good, sure it’ll be fine, but if its pants it ain’t my fault ok!
Prices correct as of 15th May 2007
1. The guys at graphicsdirect.co.uk have been really helpful and are now offering it, also have good priced sleeves and portfolio folders. I’ve bought from them before and the service is excellent.
10 sheets A1, 5mm thick = £42.00 + £5.50 delivery. £4.75 per board.
www.graphicsdirect.co.uk/products/140/White,-5mm-A1.htm
2. Paperstone.co.uk. Looks like a popular place, communication is good.
Have to currently order over the phone but they will add some to the website soon apparently. Depends if demand is good. Price I was quoted is as follows.
A1 boards, 5mm thick = £4.27 each + £16 delivery (for 20 boards, delivery might be cheaper for less). £5.07 per board.
3. Finally an Ebay seller is willingly listing some after my enquiry. Slightly larger than A1 so good if you need it bigger and can be cut to size if you don’t.
10 pack 1000 x 700, 5mm thick = £53 + £8.50 delivery. £6.15 per board.
Search for 'acid free' within the items offered. search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZslr170999QQhtZ-1
Hope this helps guys.
I now have everything I need to store my collection without worry; portfolio, sleeves and foam board.
Still trying to find a supplier of large acid free mounting corners as can only find small ones here. Waiting on a retailer to get back to me about stocking some.
Have fun,
B

Storing of prints, by slacker on Jul 2, 2007 10:26:53 GMT 1, just a couple of questions which i am hoping somebody will be able to help with:
1. the foam mount board has a shiny and a paper side - does it matter which side i store the print on? i was thinking it would probably be easier to get the sticky corners off the shiny side or is that a no no anyway?
2. is there a particular technique which any of you use for getting the print into the corners without bending the print too much?
thanks for your help.

Storing of prints, by Martin DK on Nov 20, 2008 11:29:20 GMT 1, Hi guys
Youre the experts, I have a question.
I am about to get a portfolio also, but here in Denmark, this archival stuff is kinda rare. However, I did find a seller with a mapac/artcare portfolio that holds 70x100cm sleeves. But I can only get normal 70x100cm sleeves, not archival. This means that they are not acid-free. So I think im gonna put a acid-free backingboard in each sleeve, then a tissuepaper over the front and back of the prints, would that be ok?
I can get acid-free sleeves, but only A1 size, and I would like it to be a bit bigger.
Hope you can help me, im about to order.
