Micallef LA Show..., by stuey09 on Aug 20, 2007 17:50:01 GMT 1, A very sincere and well put point Robert and I'm sure it applies to some forum members, though not too many. If a person is making such an effort to get to the LA Show I would imagine it would be due to love of the art, rather than profit.

Micallef LA Show..., by numusic on Aug 20, 2007 18:08:01 GMT 1, OK... I can't take all this anymore....So onto my questions: - Who else is tired with the scene? I use to look at those Obey fans who bought every release as robots - but in my estimation that is what some many of us have become. - Who else thinks the art suffers a little? Think how ridiculous flying from another city or even another country to line up to buy a print sounds. I went to Barely Legal to see an amazing art exhibition - and if I got some prints that was an added bonus. Think the whole mentality for many has unforutnately changed. - Who else is bored of all the stuff out there? I hope you people truly are buying what you like for your walls - because most of the work being produced now doesn't do anything for me and will be forgotten in years time. - How f*cking incredible was the Adam Neate show??? From all the pictures I've seen his work is quite simply on another level. I'm talking he has blown both Banksy and AM out of the water (yeah I said it)!
1) It's not the first time you've posted that you're "tired with the scene", there isn't really as "scene" as such. People on here are a tiny minority of the people involved in this "scene". Keep in mind 100 000 people bought the Banksy book. Keep your mind on the art and the BIGGER picture and maybe not so much on the hype and the small time collectors which is what we are. You set up a business to buy and sell on the back of this.. you've perhaps moved into an unhealthy part of the "scene". 2) People flying from one city to another doesn't damage the art (unless it's heathrow and you fly BA), the art is the art is the art. 3) There's been some incredible work produced recently and admittedly a lot of dross, but the "scene" is expanding everyday, you're lucky, you're American, go check out some of the earlier Beautiful Losers artists, find out what Aaron Rose is up to. You can't be handed everything on a plate, you collect records, you know how it is. 4) **Adam Neate is a portrait and ceramic artist, hardly revolutionary compared to other work around. Massively overrated at the moment IMO. A one trick poney so far as I can see. Preferred his work on the street. Who's to say what'll come next. Personally I'm bored to death of seeing depressed cardboard heads on here
** Adam's just mailed me offering me a canvas so i'd just like to retract the above statement.. do you think it's too late ? Damn ! it's too late.. Adam sorry, I'm sorrryyyyy.. ;D

Micallef LA Show..., by Michael Jacob on Aug 20, 2007 18:28:38 GMT 1, I will take some pictures and post them. On another art note, Im getting ready to show you guys (and gals) my first screenprint. Im just about done with my first edition. After that, Ive got 19 other ideas in various stages of production (not printed yet). My main delay has been printing quality. Im having trouble with my inks drying on the screen during the run. I need to use some kind of retarder to slow it down. As I told Silky, this forum will be the only place Im posting (and hopefully selling). Im hoping they will be well received. If not, I might cry and throw a fit!

Micallef LA Show..., by numusic on Aug 20, 2007 18:29:07 GMT 1, RKLIMEK, Thank you! Thank you! Perhaps you and some of the Older forum members will notice that I have not payed much attention to this forum anymore because of precisely what you are describing. I feel that this forum has become nothing more than a social hangout for the baggers and flippers we all claim to detest. The artwork being produced by the current artists du jour is both uninspiring and, as you mentioned, forgetful. This whole scene sort of blew up in the same way the sneaker culture blew up. it's become an easy to enter market for young graphic designers who are now making anything into a screenprint and then calling it art (not saying this is bad - there is definately an aesthetic that is being acheived, but is it on par with any of the greats who we look up to in this genre? -- not even close!) The irony is that many of these young up-and-coming artists work/have worked as graphic designers for big advertising agencies or corporations that thier art 'apparently' protests. I too am tired of this whole scene, RK -- Thank you for writing that post -- You were able to articulate everything that I have been thinking for a long while. J
For every bad generic rip off artist you can mention aligned to this scene, I can mention 5 good ones as I'm sure you can.
What's with everyone today, is it Monday ?
ahhhh, that explains it

Micallef LA Show..., by Michael Jacob on Aug 20, 2007 19:53:22 GMT 1, dumpsuk Thanks for the help. Im just finishing my first print. Its four color, and I agree that registration has been a real pain. The other real pain was keeping the paper from sticking to the screen when you lift the screen up. Its been quite an experience. I got huge drying rack off ebay and custom built a large exposure table. Each day I make a little more progress. I cant wait to post my first image.
THanks again.

LOL..
Reminds me of smoking 40 fags in a day in a council flat, watching Leeds getting relegated on a B&W portable TV, whilst listening to "How Soon is Now". Turning off the TV and finding a "Dear John... " pushed under the door, reading it underneath the yellowing net curtains whilst the rent man hammers on the door shouting " I know your in there".. across the room the Chip pan goes up in flames with a soft whoooosh, I watch the warm glow as it's reflected off the eggshell walls, dazed, I watch it flicker awhile.. The last thing I see before I pass out is a thick cloud of toxic grey smoke rolling across the ceiling forming into the shape of the Four Horseman of The Apocalype...
"And I think to myself.. what a wonderful world "

Nice one Nu, you've got one hell of an imagination ;D
Just wondering if you actually like Neate and Micallef? You seem give the best descriptions of their work, which always seems to be the reason I love em so much but I am confused over your actual opinion? Not having a go or anything, just curious?

You seem give the best descriptions of their work, which always seems to be the reason I love em so much but I am confused over your actual opinion? Not having a go or anything, just curious?

Micallef LA Show..., by numusic on Aug 20, 2007 20:39:41 GMT 1, LOL.. Reminds me of smoking 40 fags in a day in a council flat, watching Leeds getting relegated on a B&W portable TV, whilst listening to "How Soon is Now". Turning off the TV and finding a "Dear John... " pushed under the door, reading it underneath the yellowing net curtains whilst the rent man hammers on the door shouting " I know your in there".. across the room you see the Chip pan go up in flames with a soft whoooosh, you watch the warm glow as it's reflected off the eggshell walls, dazed, you watch it flicker awhile.. I think they're both excellent artists. But I think they get compared against the wrong stuff, Eelus and stencils and such, this leads to way too much hype and glorification on these boards. Their work needs to be compared against other traditional figurative "fine art" to get a better idea of where it stands.

Micallef LA Show..., by peggysue on Aug 21, 2007 2:27:31 GMT 1, No prov. That's why. But I agree, it's a great price. If I didn't have one, I'd nab it.

this will be one of those classic quotes in the post bubble future when people are back to reality- "this seems like a bargain, too good to be true? £5k for DD!"

Micallef LA Show..., by benya on Aug 21, 2007 7:16:19 GMT 1, Micallef is a classic artist and a stayer
People have been talking about this bubble bursting for years now and still nothing.
Artists like Micallef are always going to be desirable and thus their pieces will hold their value

Micallef LA Show..., by dburn on Aug 21, 2007 7:17:55 GMT 1, Hhmmmm.... Interesting stuff flying around. I just returned to the states from Edinburgh. I said this earlier but... Warhol exhibit was amazing. Not that i was expecting anything less. I'm fairly new to the scene but have been obsessed, as much of you seem to be since I’ve gotten started. Banksy's work does cost an outrageous amount. My father spent most of his life selling "fine prints" and when i told him i bought an unsigned banksy for 2 grand he nearly killed me. Not that he paid for it. While in Edinburgh i made friends with a cute British girl. I asked if she knew of a graffiti artist by the name of... she finished my sentence with an exclamation mark. Its funny how he seems to be a household name in the UK. Not so much over here but as of the last year it’s certainly starting to catch. She told me her family is well off and she looks after her dad's extensive private collection, which he plans to make a gallery out of. No banksy’s adorn it yet but maybe in the future. I plan on attending the l.a show because it’s a stones through from me (and a friend has an extra invite). Not planning to spend anything unless it knocks me over. I will say there is quite the hype. I made sure to get the UK GQ with the six-page banksy article. Talk about publicity. I showed my mom the article hoping to better explain banksy to her. Being the animal activist that she is, she wasn’t too fond of the elephant stunt in l.a (despite the fact i told her the paint was non-toxic "which i sure hope it was") she also said she thought he is a bit arrogant. Apparently the "morons" print didnt go over to well either. I cant say i completley agree with her but i have been questioning latley what Mr. banks thinks of us. Especially wealthy wankers like myself who do "escape life in art". Before anyone takes the easy way out and calls me a rich mama's boy, i will say the woman has been collecting art since most of us were still in diapers and has seen shit go down in her day... when she asked what my obsession was i replied without missing a beat. I like Banksy for the messages he puts in his work. They, as someone else mentioned... talk about what's not said. I feel like his graffiti is what my thoughts are on print. So that’s how i can justify shelling off what i do for it. What scares me is although i found morons to be funny it does also bother me that the message was sort of shot in our direction. Don’t u? Not to mention i had a friend buy a signed one for 4 grand 5-6 months ago and they are now going for 6 on eBay. Is banksy in disbelief that people are paying attention to him or paying too much for his attention? I mean if the man dislikes money so much i sure do hope he makes donations to charities or something of the sort. I just feel one day he might pull something on us because although his messages, pranks and lack of identity are good fun/genius and all. I cant help but think that he isn’t to fond of the wealthy over-consumers who coincidently seem to be the only people who can afford even an unsigned one of his prints at this point. Although i do hear from semi-reliable sources that he has no problem revealing himself to the upper class of Britain who are into the scene. So tell me banksy... wtf. You love the little people but hide in the upper class? But you hate the rich who like art? too cool for everyone are we? Are we the morons for spending all this time on you? Cause hell, i don’t know what to think anymore. If you are planning to crash you’re own market (as one person mentioned in "the bubble burst thread awhile back") by mass-producing prints. Then please let us know cause although i love ur work and can afford to pay what I do for what I like... ill gladly wait till your stunt is through so i can get a grin reaper from joe bob instead of a flipper. (Although i seriously doubt that will happen of course and even if it did mine is at least still numbered) but is anyone else catching my drift or have i gone mad? And to address what some have said earlier about the scene… yea its gone a bit over-ground but as a few have said earlier… all the banksy fans are not all on this forum nor follow him as closely. Just the obsessed star wars fans (no offense brain and bobby). Although it does bother me that no one really does seem to go very deep in the meaning of anything around here. As regards to the decline recently… love and gangsta rat have been pulling along just fine. Everyone is on holiday… no one is buying banksys right now and even I’m beginning to grow tired waiting on this next release. sorry I wrote about a page and a half. Kudos to whom ever actually reads it. But tell me. Am I off? I’m new so please feel free to tare me a new one. Ok I’m jet-lagged and I see you guys are just getting up so ill be looking forward to what the responses r in the morning. “don’t stitch me up”
