Micallef LA Show..., by slowmo on Aug 21, 2007 9:34:50 GMT 1, I think the morons message may have been distorted by time. Banksy blew up during and after the LA show, the morons was painted before when he still had prints sitting unsold on POW.
Could the real message have been he thought that the art auctions were a load of crap, from the outside looking in. One year later, he's on the inside looking out, and the message suddenly has a lot more irony than perhaps he originally intended?

Did anyone read the article in THE TIMES culture last weekend, was fairly interesting, talked about a number of shows coming up and how the art market is still stronger that ever dispite the latest jitters in the financial world.

Spot on.. people perhaps forget that these are one off paintings, not multiples targetting people buying 300 quid prints.

Micallef LA Show..., by sham69 on Aug 21, 2007 10:51:42 GMT 1, Just my take on where Micallef's going . . .
The ladder 1. Artist starts work in back bedroom knocking out canvases that his mum likes £ 2. Screen printer comes along and says not bad . . . we'll have some of that ££ 3. Artists gets a joint show with some mates £££ 4. Agent comes along and says not bad . . . I'll have some of that ££££ 5. Agent puts on sole show £££££ 6. Work starts to dry up ££££££ 7. Agent puts on a USA show to break the states £££££££ 8. Dealers start to snap up work to sell to collectors ££££££££ 8. Artists work starts to appear in auction houses . . . everyone's a winner £££££££££
9. Major galleries start to buy artists' work. 10. Artist goes into the history books as 'genre defining member of the ? movement'.
It's all about the money and ultimately protecting the art establishment.
IMHO there is only a couple of stages left for Micallef and that's when the USA dealers wake up as he's the next big thing and finally in ten year' time when the major collections Tate/Moma/Guggenhiem/Met et al have to have one in their collection.
Micallef is in the hands of the establishment now. Not the punter. Galleries and Laz will keep the prices high because they've got a vested interest in doing so. It's their bread and butter. Someone has to keep their Lear jets flying. No one is going to wake up in the morning and say let's have an AM 2 for the price of 1 sale to get things moving.
We're in a curve and no one knows if this is the bottom or the top. Like punk rock or pop art and every other 'movement' that came before, there will be those that stay the journey and those that in retrospect you feel slightly embarrassed about. Micallef is in my mind The Clash of the artworld. He's not a one trick pony and I've got the feeling that the best is yet to come. If not I'll eat my cap.
True, if Micallef's show stinks (which I don't think it will) prices will dip in the short term, till the next big show. If it doesn't . . . the opposite will prevail. The yanks will love him and everything moves up a gear. Stateside dealers/galleries will be falling over themselves to get a piece of the action.
It's a simple case of supply and demand. Bigger audience, infinite marketplace and a finite amount of work. Just who is going to stay the distance and be this generations' Bacon/Hockney/Picasso/Dali. You can bet your bottom dollar it's not going to be some of the crap touted on this forum. In time you will be able to count them on one hand.
Just where is Adam Neate on that ladder?

Micallef LA Show..., by pezlow on Aug 21, 2007 11:05:26 GMT 1, Good post Sham 69. Problem is that may be a Banksy ladder but it is not a traditional ladder at all.
The traditional art ladder is:
1. Artist goes to an established post-graduate art college 2. Artist puts on a degree show 3. Artist spends years and years putting out work in group shows and the occasional solo show, gradually getting more and more popular and commanding higher and higher prices. 4. Artist has an established body of collectors so that his work starts attracting the attention of the secondary market. 5. Auction houses start talking about the artist and selling his work. 6. Museums start buying the artists work and/or start featuring his work in exhibitions. 7. Artist dies and either his work fades into insignificance or he becomes one of the members of a particular art movement.
Of course there was a bit of a paradigm shift with the YBA's who, for the first time really, bypassed a whole number of these stages through the patronage of one very high profile collector. They really shook things up in the art world.
But what you are suggesting is the "ladder" for artistic accomplishment only really applies, IMHO, to Banksy.

Micallef LA Show..., by numusic on Aug 21, 2007 11:11:27 GMT 1, Some good points Sham. But maybe "You can bet your bottom dollar it's not going to be some of the crap touted on this forum"
That's a bit like getting into football and choosing Chelsea as your team. Most of the premier league Micallef, Neate and Banksy etc have been producing work for well over a decade. Check out the work from ten years ago and it's pretty lame. Neate came to the scene cos nobody wanted his work so he started to leave it in the street. Micallef has taken a very traditional role in portrait painting then later added some "subversive" content and got himself noticed and Banksy's early stencil and drawing technique was pretty dire compared to todays standards.
So, maybe in ten years time, the people developing in public, i.e those with the balls to post their first attempts on here, will be up there and will in some cases will surpass the others.
Or maybe not..

Micallef LA Show..., by sham69 on Aug 21, 2007 11:17:10 GMT 1, Point taken Pezlow. And you're right.
Key to the whole thing though is the secondary market. The real differentiator comes when a traditional dealer gets involved. Working on a 50% margin changes the paradigm for those that got in on the ground floor. Same with the auction houses. I guess the beauty is with Ebay and the Forum everyone who buys or sells becomes a dealer of sorts. There are still people out there with more money than taste that need to be told what to buy and that's where old school come in. Similar for those with a sheep mentality.
My point is that with the exception of Micallef and Banksy who has the capability of rising beyond your number 4?

Good question. Not sure I really know the answer. From this scene I would say, in no particular order, Faile, Adam Neate and Swoon.

No argument there mate.. there's certainly a lot of "tribute" acts around these days.

Micallef LA Show..., by stuey09 on Aug 21, 2007 13:05:39 GMT 1, Just read the post Sham69. Very well put and unfortunately I tend to agree that Micallef is may well move beyond the affordability of the average punter. A succesful LA show may well make the demand for his work overwhelm supply. He really does have some fantastic work out there and given that it is currently a buyers market, I would sincerely recommend his work to anyone who is still sitting on the fence, before it becomes too expensive.

Micallef LA Show..., by dgb133 on Aug 21, 2007 16:14:41 GMT 1,
I think Micallef is great too.
But I'm not exactly sure when people started talking about Bubbles specificaly related to Micallef or Banksy. But for one thing people started calling a top in the real estate bubble about 5 years ago. Only now is it really hitting home. (no pun intended) - top callers are notoriously early.
Evidence of a bubble is - prices going exponential - not just up llike the past few years but doubling, tripling, quadrupling in very short time. Such as we've seen in 2008 - like angel bomber going from 600 to 2000 last month. More evidence is speculators coming in to the market. This can be evidenced by quite a few buyers and sellers on ebay buying and selling many copies of Banksy's even of the same prints. Another sign is when loads of amateurs start coming in to the market AND are making money - (it really shouldn't be that easy). Another sign is just the excessive hype - example is when shop owners protect their graffitti "mural" on the wall even when they have no idea about any of this and it's obviously not even work by Banksy. (As someone pointed out on a post here yesterday.)
Buy what you like and can afford fine. But I'm telling you - this will be a phenomenon to tell the grandkids about.

Bang on the money slowmo, Banksy's talked about how the art world has managed to flog bizarre art that requires a thesis to have any understanding regarding what its meaning is and has been fairly critical of this practice. A modern film or book that required another film or book to give the audience a cats chance of it being understood would no doubt be reviewed as a failure. Only in art do we almost expect the artist to fail to communicate to the audience and still yet we applaud sometimes before even receiving the lecture that can begin to explain what the piece is supposed to be saying. Not that banksy is being critical of the ideas behind the art but just the piece of art its self that failed so miserably to communicate what it was supposed to be saying. Morons wasn't two fingers to us, it was two fingers to the old school art establishment.
Although saying that more I think about it, more it makes sense that POW are not releasing his prints because Mr B doesn't want to become a living irony. Perhaps flags were the last prints he'll ever release and its just street pieces from here on in. Afterall, he doesn't need the money and his voice will be stronger without the irony attached..... Why keep working for the newspaper when you can be superman every day of the week?

Warhol exhibit was amazing. Not that i was expecting anything less. I'm fairly new to the scene but have been obsessed, as much of you seem to be since I’ve gotten started. Banksy's work does cost an outrageous amount. My father spent most of his life selling "fine prints" and when i told him i bought an unsigned banksy for 2 grand he nearly killed me. Not that he paid for it. While in Edinburgh i made friends with a cute British girl. I asked if she knew of a graffiti artist by the name of... she finished my sentence with an exclamation mark. Its funny how he seems to be a household name in the UK. Not so much over here but as of the last year it’s certainly starting to catch. She told me her family is well off and she looks after her dad's extensive private collection, which he plans to make a gallery out of. No banksy’s adorn it yet but maybe in the future. I plan on attending the l.a show because it’s a stones through from me (and a friend has an extra invite). Not planning to spend anything unless it knocks me over. I will say there is quite the hype. I made sure to get the UK GQ with the six-page banksy article. Talk about publicity. I showed my mom the article hoping to better explain banksy to her. Being the animal activist that she is, she wasn’t too fond of the elephant stunt in l.a (despite the fact i told her the paint was non-toxic "which i sure hope it was") she also said she thought he is a bit arrogant. Apparently the "morons" print didnt go over to well either. I cant say i completley agree with her but i have been questioning latley what Mr. banks thinks of us. Especially wealthy wankers like myself who do "escape life in art". Before anyone takes the easy way out and calls me a rich mama's boy, i will say the woman has been collecting art since most of us were still in diapers and has seen s**t go down in her day... when she asked what my obsession was i replied without missing a beat. I like Banksy for the messages he puts in his work. They, as someone else mentioned... talk about what's not said. I feel like his graffiti is what my thoughts are on print. So that’s how i can justify shelling off what i do for it. What scares me is although i found morons to be funny it does also bother me that the message was sort of shot in our direction. Don’t u? Not to mention i had a friend buy a signed one for 4 grand 5-6 months ago and they are now going for 6 on eBay. Is banksy in disbelief that people are paying attention to him or paying too much for his attention? I mean if the man dislikes money so much i sure do hope he makes donations to charities or something of the sort. I just feel one day he might pull something on us because although his messages, pranks and lack of identity are good fun/genius and all. I cant help but think that he isn’t to fond of the wealthy over-consumers who coincidently seem to be the only people who can afford even an unsigned one of his prints at this point. Although i do hear from semi-reliable sources that he has no problem revealing himself to the upper class of Britain who are into the scene. So tell me banksy... wtf. You love the little people but hide in the upper class? But you hate the rich who like art? too cool for everyone are we? Are we the morons for spending all this time on you? Cause hell, i don’t know what to think anymore. If you are planning to crash you’re own market (as one person mentioned in "the bubble burst thread awhile back") by mass-producing prints. Then please let us know cause although i love ur work and can afford to pay what I do for what I like... ill gladly wait till your stunt is through so i can get a grin reaper from joe bob instead of a flipper. (Although i seriously doubt that will happen of course and even if it did mine is at least still numbered) but is anyone else catching my drift or have i gone mad? And to address what some have said earlier about the scene… yea its gone a bit over-ground but as a few have said earlier… all the banksy fans are not all on this forum nor follow him as closely. Just the obsessed star wars fans (no offense brain and bobby). Although it does bother me that no one really does seem to go very deep in the meaning of anything around here. As regards to the decline recently… love and gangsta rat have been pulling along just fine. Everyone is on holiday… no one is buying banksys right now and even I’m beginning to grow tired waiting on this next release. sorry I wrote about a page and a half. Kudos to whom ever actually reads it. But tell me. Am I off? I’m new so please feel free to tare me a new one. Ok I’m jet-lagged and I see you guys are just getting up so ill be looking forward to what the responses r in the morning. “don’t stitch me up” my eyes say OUCH

Micallef LA Show..., by doughy on Sept 7, 2007 23:03:36 GMT 1, I think there is more pleasure and satisfaction in finding somebody who hasn't hit the bigtime yet, who you respect for what they have done, are doing and potentially be capable of producing, than possibly jumping on the current bandwagon.
If you are in this to make money, collect when they are unknown.
I have a few people who I have my eye on, but importantly I love their work too. And they have alredy been mentioned on other threads, and their work is still affordable.
