FIXED GEAR BIKES - Anyone got one?, by digitalkid on Oct 15, 2008 12:50:44 GMT 1, big blokes on little kiddie bikes looks bizarre to me, but hey horses for courses. Yeah thats what Im worried about Im six foot, and on ma Mountain bike I have ma saddle up really really high. I think on a BMX I might look like some sort of Circus act ;D
To be honest most of my BMXs are display only, but I do ride a few of them. I have a 1980 Moosegoose which is a 20" frame but has extended (from factory) head and seat tube. This is great to ride even for me and I'm 6'. I mainly ride my Brompton at the mo, but have been thinking of building a fixed gear for ages. Would take me right back to the mid eighties when we used to strip down Raleigh racers and put cow bars on them, life was so simple back then..

FIXED GEAR BIKES - Anyone got one?, by digitalkid on Oct 15, 2008 12:58:55 GMT 1, The rush from the danger of being squashed flat by a bus as you have no brakes?
Not sure if you missed this in previous posts? but the rear brake is your legs stopping the rear wheel, simple. Legally to run a fixed gear on the street you need a front brake..

Using this logic - how does anyone know they want one before they buy one???

FIXED GEAR BIKES - Anyone got one?, by barry cilit on Oct 15, 2008 13:16:59 GMT 1, fixed gear bikes are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 8 months ago!! up till then the Hoxtonites rode around on old folding granny bikes for some reason. Apparently it was so people were less likely to steal them. after a while people saw them as fashionable and coverted from riding black brakeless BMXs (SOOO 3 years ago) to the granny bike. The arty trendies amongst them saw the whole Fixed gear bike culture emerging in SF where people were seen to be "building" their own bikes and ditched the granny bike for the more sleek looking bike. The slender bike was far easier to be seen from and one was able to air their ironic hipster tattoos during mid-pedal opposed to the rather hunched position of the granny bike.

FIXED GEAR BIKES - Anyone got one?, by andrewd on Oct 15, 2008 18:10:45 GMT 1, Anyone here ride semi seriously in London? e.g. with London Dynamos in Richmond Park? I am currently putting in the miles on a turbo trainer with a view to doing a few TT's and sportives next spring. Looking to reward myself with a expensive bike from Cycle Fit. Fixies are ok but really they are velodromes like Mountain bikes are for off road. Hey but let's not stop that from getting in the way of this year's fashion!

I dont really know what a lot of that means but i agree with what you say re the cyclists in London! they ride through red lights and on pavements etc! v dangerous and i agree they should be more careful! they could have your eye out they ride so close.

Can you list the parts you used for this, looking to put one together and I not quite sure what to get. Also is there a list of rating the parts by quality, I want to make sure I'm not buying crap.

FIXED GEAR BIKES - Anyone got one?, by Hugs on Oct 17, 2008 10:56:40 GMT 1, I don't have a fixed wheel bike but I do have an original Raliegh Grifter !
Totally original condition complete with Pac man stickers and the original tool roll and puncture repair kit as it came with the bike. Must be about a 1979 model i reckon, but could be earlier ( ? ) The bike is in Bristol, I'm in Brisbane.

Now THAT is a suhweet little ride. Man, when I was a kid, 1 of my buddies had 1 of these(he had the 20in, not the 24in cruiser). I thought it was the berries! I'd let him take the Skyway for a rip, while I would run his Quadangle like I stole it.
Nice bike, Guv!
