Banksy - New Orleans - Hurricane Katrina, by crazyarsemother on Aug 29, 2008 8:34:12 GMT 1, How is it that in 10 years no one has been able to reach this standard of 'clever' stencilling. It does no really make sense. People have forged Van Dykes and other old masters - a stencil must be easier?
Anyway, real good fun. Interesting that the umbrella girl is the favourite. I have been dissappointed with some of his recent stuff in UK of late, it felt clumsy and poorly observed (compared to his other high standards) but these are right back up there. Awesome. God Save Bristol.

Yes and yes they are really good. I rate FAKE as well. I am not sure that the Dolk's add anything to their environment. Looks like a pretty beautiful place already. Thats a discussion for another thread.
Maybe I have grown up to appreciate the Banksy asthetic.

Banksy - New Orleans - Hurricane Katrina, by seidbereit on Aug 29, 2008 18:01:26 GMT 1, My my my.... these are all outstanding. Been suffering with man-flu since last week and have just come on here to see if I could cheer myself up and these have just done the job brilliantly. No doubt about their being Banksy's works either although I can't quite shake off the feeling that the Brolly one looks a little like Dolk (albeit without a huge tag).
Excellent, though. Cheers for all the pics you've all gathered together!!

Banksy - New Orleans - Hurricane Katrina, by lee3 on Aug 30, 2008 8:49:06 GMT 1, Just a thought i figured i would toss into the mix- remember how when the robin gunnigham stuff came out Banksy used that old gorilla image behind the mask to respond with the modest Banksy doesn't draw well stuff? I (like others here) interpreted that response to be that the guy who used to paint monkeys is now a gorilla in size with little left to hide behind.
But, I can be one to over think things and frankly my favorite artists leave me questioning just what exactly is the meaning of their composition. The cerebral guessing game is a big part of the fun for me. In light of the New Orleans tagging that we've all enjoyed this week, do you think it's possible that the gorilla drawing could have also been a precursor with the mardi gras mask as to what he would do next? He's obviously given this NOLA work a lot of thought and (I presume) a significant amount of practice in his studio leading up to this wonderful work of art, yet the gunningham article was merely 3 or 4 weeks ago. Or is it simply too late on a Friday evening and I should get to bed?

Banksy - New Orleans - Hurricane Katrina, by frank11 on Aug 30, 2008 9:14:02 GMT 1, I am pretty sure that the Gorilla stencil first appeared in Bristol about two years ago. At the time alot of speculation as to who actually had put the piece up, a few people did not see it as his style. It was only when the piece appeared on his site that the rumours were put to bed.
I like the analogy of the mask is not enough anymore to shield his anonimity, and think it was more a take on this as oppose to a precursor to his next stunt.

Just a few randon thoughts.
I would guess that Banksy was aware of the Mail's Gunningham article for some time before it was published. After all it was at least 12 months in the making by the Mail's own admission. After all that time it was a pretty unremarkable batch of findings. I would also think that Banksy has factored in the possibility of arrest whilst on one of visits to the USA and the subsequent publicity sought by some low ranking police officer/customs - I arrested Banksy and here are the pictures type thing.
I have been stunned by the amount of new work this last week and in particular the quality. The amount of preparation and research that has gone into the work is awesome and don't forget Cans 2 was in the making as well. The Umbrella Girl is an instant classic imo. I would also add that with this and Bethlehem that Banksy is now in areas that transend just art.

Banksy - New Orleans - Hurricane Katrina, by Prescription Art on Aug 30, 2008 12:06:49 GMT 1, I can't really see a link between the gorilla & New Orleans. I just see the gorilla as someone futilely attempting to hide their identity.
