Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by onemandown72 on Sept 30, 2008 20:14:08 GMT 1, And even more interesting than donuts is the trend for people to have young ladies with huge bouncing "dirty pillows" as their avatars. I fully support this trend and think it is the way forward for all kinds of art forums, urban and others. Please feel free to change your avatars to bouncing jugs and post anything below.....
What else does the bouncy lady do?

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by snausages on Sept 30, 2008 20:16:15 GMT 1, Banksy followers are wired to follow the crowd when times are uncertain, experts say.
Brain and behavior studies clearly show that when information is scarce and threats seem imminent, people often stop listening to their own logic and look to see what other forum members are doing.

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by pfffffffffft on Sept 30, 2008 20:19:01 GMT 1, Oh right, guess that's game set match! Except that the majority of items in that auction were prints or low dollar items. I mean it still makes no sense to me that everyone was spooked except for Print collectors. Looks like half of the items at L&T were prints or low value lots. Anyway this one was a real keeper! www.lyonandturnbull.com/asp/fullCatalogue.asp?salelot=222+++++++49+&refno=++108808Guess all the Weismann fanatics were "spooked." Can't believe no one bid :/ And you don't think that the fact that they put a reserve of ยฃ3000 on a Color Trolley was an issue. When that print is selling for about ยฃ2000? You don't think putting a reserve of ยฃ2500 on a set of skateboard decks was an issue? Do ya? www.lyonandturnbull.com/asp/searchresults.asp?pg=4&ps=25Although they have achieved that price individually once or twice that reserve is much higher than the average price for those. And I already told you โ spell out the terms of the wager and I'll let you know if I accept. But as I've been saying all along there are numerous factors involved in auction results and I doubt that one or two more auctions will clarify anything. I certainly think Banksy speaking out was part of it and I think the fact that it's half rate auction house with aggressive estimates in a tough financial time was the other. But if you want to keep bouncing "facts" off each other go right ahead.
Snausages, the terms of the wager is as follow:
70% or higher unsold rate at either Bonhams or Dreweatts and you get 1000 GBP of my hard earned cash. BOTH Bonhams and Dreweatts have to do better than 70% unsold I get 1000 GBP of your hard earned cash. That simple.
And print collectors wouldn't have been spooked because the lots had PEST CONTROL authentication, and not vermin.
So your defense is to try and try and disprove my point because 100% of the lots didnt sell? And for your information the reserve is typically set below the low end of the estimate.
Snausages, with all due respect either put up or shut up. Either take the wager or enough already, I am going back to discussing donuts.

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by pfffffffffft on Sept 30, 2008 20:21:37 GMT 1, I concur...any insight on donuts in NY? This is a required stop for anyone that visits NYC: doughnutplant.com/The rose petal donuts are a delight. Off topic, Magnolia Bakery for cupcakes is more hype than tastiness.
Oh those donuts looks delicious! Thanks for the tip. I will report back after I have achieved tastyness.

Looking forward to it! I also suggest getting whatever their daily special is/are. They have some pretty unique flavors. The guy that owns it uses a recipe from his grandfather who made donuts for US Army during WW2.

Thanks for the information except that the low estimate IS very often the reserve although true, it isn't always. But I know this very well thank you.
And like I said it's a wee bit more complicated than that because that auctions you're comparing to are a wee bit more high profile and many of the reserves aren't as optimistic. I'll take a closer look at the scenario and get back to you.

RUNNING WITH THE HERD
"The forum changes how you see the world in some way," he said.
"Our brains are really wired to accept the forum opinion of the world."
In this case, running with the herd may not make good sense, said Paul Zak of the Center for Neuroeconomics Studies at Claremont Graduate University in California.
"There is this sort of herd mentality over-reaction to Vermin" Zak said in a telephone interview.
"One of our forum members actually pulled his money out of Banksy. He ought to know better."

I would disagree, the L & T auction got toooooooooons of press due to the Vermin lots and another few lots that were also controversial, apparently around 30 bidders actually showed.
But you do that, take a long look at the scenario and get back to me on that.

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by snausages on Sept 30, 2008 20:41:23 GMT 1, Right L&T got some great press for that auction. Give me a break. They don't have a clientele nearly as big or respectable and the press they got was negative. How can that be an asset? Sure I'll get back to you but first I need to eat more doughnuts! Isn't that cool! I like doughnuts too! Finally we can agree on something!

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by snausages on Sept 30, 2008 20:48:16 GMT 1, "When people are presented with a situation where they don't have information or the information is ambiguous, we see activation of the amygdala and insula," Banksy said in a telephone interview.
And people begin to doubt their own judgment.
Banksy's team did an experiment in which they recruited actors and forum members. "One real subject went into a (MRI) scanner," he said.
They were asked to do a simple task, assessing shapes.
"We had the group (of actors) tell them the wrong answer sometimes," Banksy said.
The forum members began to change their answers to match what the actors said. Perhaps they were merely overriding their own judgments for the sake of getting along, Banksy said.

Oh well, I thought you said that this Vermin business didnt affect the auction, that the economy is bad and the reserves were too high and thats why the auction was a 70% failure.
Which is it?

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by cutty on Sept 30, 2008 21:22:08 GMT 1, F this...Banksy is an absolute douche ! What person who has gotten his fame, fortune, and wealth from doing what they love because of ppl like us who collect there stuff then turn around and say you can do this but not that; this is real but thatss not, I don't feel like authenticating those b/c they belong on the street. Who the fuk do you think you are Banksy? what you own the Streets? blow me! and it's about time some1 spoke up about this.... And you mean to tell me in times like theese and the world we live in if Banksy was just a broke ass street artist and ran accross a banksy street piece he wouldn't try and snag it? giv me a break, wata a supertentious bastard. Still has mad skills as an artist tho Banksy doesn't do his street pieces like say Neate where he creates a piece which is meant to be taken. Banksy does his art for the people and if some low life cock sucker takes it to sell at auction well I can see why he doesn't want to fleece there pockets. So IMO his view is hey anyone can own one of my street pieces but I'm not going to create an easy avenue for you to sell them. Example Banksy goes out and for all of us does a mural I see it first go down remove it. Does that entitle me to 50k+ I don't get the thought process homeless or not the art was never intended to be taken. And if it is taken well then enjoy it but good luck selling it at auction.
Good call.

Yous should pipe down until you accept pfffffffft's bet. With every tedious and predictable post that you make in the interim you are making a right fool of yourself. You're coming across as a bit neurotic TBH, and utterely incapable of admitting when you're wrong.

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by alsbabar on Sept 30, 2008 22:25:12 GMT 1, Look snausages, Lying and Turnedbulls**t was a f**king s**t auction, all buyers knew it was a bulls**t auction, not just because of the banksy warning, its because they are a bunch of amateurs, just like you, and they were greedy f**kers and I was there at the auction and not one single bid on any of the prints came from the floor, all done over the phone - anyway, anyone could have bid to set the ball rolling, so if the estimate/reserve wasnt hit, no one loses out.
Now give it a rest you, you are a boring angry spiteful tosser - that wont give up, because you know you are wrong in a super supreme way - FACT

So are you saying I'm acting like someone who asked someone for proof about something and demanded to see links to articles to support their information ...and then when handed the proof and the links โ they freak out and say I don't believe that rubbish and claim victory!?

And people begin to doubt their own judgment. Banksy's team did an experiment in which they recruited actors and forum members. "One real subject went into a (MRI) scanner," he said. They were asked to do a simple task, assessing shapes. "We had the group (of actors) tell them the wrong answer sometimes," Banksy said. The forum members began to change their answers to match what the actors said. Perhaps they were merely overriding their own judgments for the sake of getting along, Banksy said. Yous should pipe down until you accept pfffffffft's bet. With every tedious and predictable post that you make in the interim you are making a right fool of yourself. You're coming across as a bit neurotic TBH, and utterely incapable of admitting when you're wrong. So are you saying I'm acting like someone who asked someone for proof about something and demanded to see links to articles to support their information ...and then when handed the proof and the links โ they freak out and say I don't believe that rubbish and claim victory!?

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by snausages on Oct 1, 2008 0:44:02 GMT 1, sorry xtc, but I would have shut up on page 1, yet pft had to parade out fact after fact to support his "opinion" in his effort to try and boost his ego. Here's a fact. This thread would have been only 1 page long if pftt et. al. didn't drag it out. Good night.

I am a she, and better arguing your stance with facts than just talking out your ass.
Looking forward to taking your money.

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by snausages on Oct 1, 2008 1:14:37 GMT 1, My sincerest condolences mam. Anyway facts are great. ...but I guess by your account it's not a fact that the stock market is in the crapper. I guess it's not a fact that estimates were higher at L&T than elsewhere. I guess it's not a fact that several Banksy prints were bid higher at L&T than they were bid at other auction houses. I guess it's not fact that the art market in general is at a low point? Give me a break you blowhard.

Banksy's artworks fail to shift , by j8jweb on Oct 1, 2008 9:38:32 GMT 1, speaking as someone who attended the auction... and someone who had only just learned who Pest Control and Vermin actually were (thanks to this forum), I definitely was put off bidding by the complexity of the issue. The media articles which suggested some of the street pieces were actually fake didn't help. It was strangely confusing and seemed unprofessional.
Having decided to leave the street pieces alone, I wanted to bid on Bomb Middle England (the one that sold for ยฃ13k), but I thought the estimate looked expensive for an edition of 34/500. Stupidly I didn't read the auction amendments list which explained this was a printing error and should have read 34/50. I might have bid on it had I known.
In general the lack of bidding further compounded my existing doubts, which were definitely put there for the reasons described above.
Based on my experience of the auction I would definitely say that two primary factors (loss of confidence, and the state of the economy) were at play. Although most of the PC authenticated pieces didn't sell, bidding was in fact more lively on these than on the Vermin authenticated pieces, most of which received no bids whatsoever.
