I think all the packaging was "tagged", mine is more centered than the one on the previous page. Packaging was A+ bomb proof!

Here is a photo from MEAR’s first large canvas sale at his first art show at the 0-1 Gallery. That was John Pochna’s gallery in Hollywood [he just recently opened it back up in Downtown], which played a big part in the early lowbrow movement.

Major art collectors Stuart and Judy Spence purchased that piece as MEAR was hanging it in that picture. It was exhibited in the Laguna Art Museum 1998-9 "Life Lessons: How Art Can Change Your Life". They ended up donating that piece to the Laguna Fine Art Musuem in 1999 as well. They have very kind things to say about MEAR and were some of his first major patrons.

We had been collecting art for 10 years, when someone asked "how many paintings do you have?", and we had to search to find any at all - Painting just wasn't the point. But Mear's painting is wholeheartedly painting. It is not surprising that a lot of his energy and ideas flow out onto public walls. This work is subtitled "Two Strikes"

Below is the story [in MEAR own words wherever quotes] from his Oct 07 Juxtapoz article, the non quotes are Greg Escalante interviewing him/writing the article :

“There was a battle for every bit of space on those neighborhood and city walls, the same as the battle going on right now in galleries,” MEAR continue. “When I broke through, or started to break through, it was as if I finially new there were no rules. Sometimes it takes an outsider influence to point out the obvious.”

And so it was. MEAR’s path to reach a larger audience almost began immediately. In 1993 MEAR’s close friend Skate One was killed by an Amtrak Train while attempting to construct a graffiti piece. To commemorate the friend he lost, MEAR painted a mural on the side of the famed Zero One Gallery building, immediately grabbing the attention of gallery owner John Pochna. “I remember dropping by to check it out a day later after getting a little break from painting,” MEAR recalls. “I was cruising down the street covered in pain splatters, on my skateboard, being pulled by my 2 pit bulls. It would have made a great picture now that I think about it. But Pochna came running out and asked if that was my work and if I’d want to be in a show he was putting up. So I said, ‘Sure, it’s another place to get my message out right?’ and nobody I knew was doing it in galleries.” Showing up with his painting an hour into the opening, MEAR hiked up to a ladder, hammered his own nail way up on the wall, and hung the piece. Almost as soon as it hit the wall it sold. “That was the first time I met Stuart famed art collector Spence. As soon as I’d hung it he said loudly, ‘Sold!’ I didn’t know who said it or who he was until later.

MEAR x LA vs. WAR/YO WHAT HAPPENED TO PEACE has a big street installation going up today [hopefully] which I will post pictures of soon. Below are also some of the 3’x4’ pieces in progress. There are 21 of the panels in total, with all of them hand painted/converted by MEAR and printed out/conceptualized by YO WHAT HAPPENED TO PEACE.
