Original Banksy Rat, by solar77 on Oct 30, 2007 14:51:59 GMT 1, Sometimes I agree with the "it should have been left there" mentality, but on the other hand, this piece probably wouldn't exist or it would have faded away by now otherwise.
That does look very legit, by the way.

Original Banksy Rat, by Jef Aerosol on Oct 30, 2007 15:08:09 GMT 1, It definitely should have been left there ! A while ago, I installed some fake streetsigns in my city and they very soon went away in spite of how carefully I had fixed them to the posts. Some time later, i met a guy who told me a friend of his had taken one and now has it on his wall at home. He took it on the very day I had put it up ! For me, this guy doesn't like street art ! When you like street art, you leave it on the street ! And if you want some for you to hang on your wall, you get in touch with the artist, or you buy originals in the galleries, or you buy prints, or you just take nice photos and print them if you want. If that guy had got in touch with me, i could have painted a sign post for him. And if he had no money, i could have tried to adapt to his budget. I have even given stuff more than once to penniless street art lovers... If having something on you wall only because it's WORTH something is your point, then you're more of a money lover than an art lover ! Especially when it is Street Art...

Original Banksy Rat, by keepingitreal on Oct 30, 2007 15:09:27 GMT 1, In past history of Banksy street pieces, if the image of the piece was printed in one of his books it's worth a whole lot more.
That being said the piece should have stayed on the street, where it belongs.
Good luck!

Original Banksy Rat, by jonpud on Oct 30, 2007 15:36:49 GMT 1, This debate will go on for ever!! But street art is for the street, full stop.
The only exception to this would be the likes of Neate who deliberately leaves his street pieces for anyone to take!! I love that idea, and have TOTAL respect for him doing it, just a shame that it rarely goes to the right people!!
Jef - love your comment regarding working to someone's budget who has no money!!!!! ;D (We know what you meant mate!!!!! )

Original Banksy Rat, by sterlzuk on Oct 30, 2007 15:37:16 GMT 1, should have been left where it was....
Yeah but it was boards on a building site... so leave it so the builders could rip it down and chuck it with all the other boards? This was before the media interest in Banksy as well so they wouldn't have known. Better that someone has it who followed him from an early stage and can appreciate it than be thrown away? Why the negging guys? I wanted to share something with forum! Don't want to have to think about sharing stuff in case I get negged!

Original Banksy Rat, by arcam on Oct 30, 2007 15:44:52 GMT 1, but the problem is that this piece would never still be on the street anyway A gallery would have come along and nicked it, and then be selling it for ยฃ50,000+ . Two wrongs don't make a right Silky.

Original Banksy Rat, by Daniel Silk on Oct 30, 2007 16:00:35 GMT 1, Ok, lets all think about what realistic options a pieces has like this ;D
1. Gets destroyed by the builders when work starts on site.
2. Gets taken by a Banksy fan, and is treasured by them forever.
3. Gets taken and then sold on ebay.
4. Taken by a gallery or auction house and then sold.

Original Banksy Rat, by arcam on Oct 30, 2007 16:04:51 GMT 1, Building work can last for months, years even. Say it was removed by a fan who'd cherish it for years, he'd be denying many more fans of seeing it on the street.

Banksy, hope you tune in mate!! Keep your art to brick walls me old mate!!
Can't blame anyone taking something from builders fence, would end up destroyed anyway.
Annoying thing is I own a building company and Banksy aught to get his arse down here and spray every bloody one of my hoardings!!!!!!!!! ;D

Original Banksy Rat, by lesbianwednesdays on Oct 30, 2007 16:15:26 GMT 1, street art is like life silky, it has a finite period of time in which to make the most of it's self. after which it ceases to exist outside of the memories of those left behind and in images recorded during it's life.
ashes to ashes, dust to dust and all that. jef, spot on geezer. the truth well said mate.
if the artist put it on something that had a very real prospect of living a short life then that is their prerogative, we should have the scruples to respect that.
make the most of it while it's there, like life.
