US ELECTION, by funster on Nov 4, 2008 21:35:38 GMT 1, I personally feel that at a time of increased diplomatic tension around the world it would be healthy to have someone who truly appreciates the real horrors of war to be making the decisions. I also fear the Barracks lack of past credibility will mean he'll want to come in and stamp his mark, but probably in the wrong way.

Why is he the ideal candidate? Because his campaign told you so? They've chucked so much money at it they've probably almost got McCain believing...
Hope... Hype

Why is that?
Don't you think that a lot of the furore about Obama has a lot to do with his (advertising) campaign?

US ELECTION, by mammal2 on Nov 4, 2008 21:59:44 GMT 1, It won't be close. Obama will win in a landslide and rightfully so given the caliber of leader he's shown himself to be. Eh? He's not shown himself to be any calibre of leader so far
You can't entirely tell what a person will be like as President from the way he fought for the office, but it shows a few useful things i feel. A test of temperament, ideas, judgment, strategy, and resilience. To get to this point Obama has out-campaigned both the Republicans and the Clintons, besting America's two most formidable political machines by building from scratch an even better organisation of his own.

US ELECTION, by Avian Security on Nov 4, 2008 22:02:35 GMT 1, Personally I don't mind John McCain too much, he's kind of a cute doddering grandad type figure and I feel for him that he's tried so hard for so long and he's probably not going to get into the White House. Palin, however, is absolutely terrifying, the prospect of having someone even dumber, more stubborn and more extreme than Bush that close to the seat of power makes me feel sick.

Back to the 'if you throw enough money' argument
I think the biggest mistake this whole election was Palin as VP, if not I'd happily be having a big bet on McCain, but she may be his downfall
I honestly can't believe there are people here that really think Obama means change...

... There you go! McCain could have picked 2000 qualified female republicans who could have filled the role as VP and he winds up picking Palin! Tells the rest of the world what his mind is like and after Bush sold America down the river, this endorsement is terrifying!

Why is that? Why does he mean change? Because his HYPE oops, sorry HOPE campaign told you that? Do you believe everything that comes out of his mouth? He's a politician remember...
Of course there will be A change or two if he gets in, new man in office, first black president blah blah... but WHAT exactly will be the change he talks about...
Give him six months, he'll be EXACTLY like any other man in power. You'll realise you've been sucked in by the spin and hype and you'll feel dirty for it

US ELECTION, by mammal2 on Nov 4, 2008 22:25:37 GMT 1, That is more than possible Mike. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them, but you do have to have a degree of hope in life. This election affects us all. The election of the most powerful man in the world. In the debates between them and the campaign exchanges since, it is Obama who has come over as the nerveless, reassuring, sober, mature and authoritative one, the presidential one. It is John McCain, frantically switching tactics and snatching after headlines to try to get traction in the contest, who has come over as the impetuous, angry, adolescent, erratic one, the unpresidential one. The old bastard that has to drag his mother out today, who was possibly dosed with adrenaline to get her moving to prove he has a few years yet. The mac is back. Mac can take a walk, and also take that mad b**ch with him. oi oi

Mike, I feel sorry for you. You assume he's a liar before he's even assumed office. If you look at his life history and his voting record as well as being one of the only politicians in the US who spoke out against the war when the administration was branding anyone who did as a terrorist sympathizer you'd see that he walks the damn walk.
Just curious, how have the past 8 years treated you? Hows business these days? How have the failed policies of this administration tanking the world economy affected you?
Someone so jaded and bitter suggests to me that perhaps you're having a rougher go as the rest of us.

US ELECTION, by spirit on Nov 4, 2008 22:36:45 GMT 1, Ok I see it's all happening on this thread.
Have to say I completely agree with Mike
havana - you seem to think Mike holds the view he does because he a "good ole boy" (with the potentially racist undertones that suggests)
If he's like me then he holds these views simply because he sees how the system works. When he says that Obama will most likely be a disappointment 6 months down the line, it's not because he's black or a democrat or anything like that - it's because he's just like any other presidential contender - backed by corporate and banking money and a paid up member of the system.
The democrat/republican system is in power and the best way for it to stay that way is to maintain the status quo for as long as possible. That means no significant change.
