Will the wife notice?, by Deleted on Aug 28, 2010 1:36:18 GMT 1, Ok, so it's late on a Friday night / early on a Saturday morning. I've drunk too much, but only because I've had the opportunity...
... my wife and the two kids have all been away in Cornwall all week.
In their absence I had intended to kick back, relax, go to the pub, try not to work too hard and go to a few galleries.
The reality is that...
... due to my sister, I have spent 15 terrifiying hours at Thorpe Park (we're both nearly 40).
... due to an impending deadline I have worked 65 hours this week.
However, I have still (and I am very proud of this) through late nights and early morning, managed to repaint the woodwork and repaint the walls in our three-storey hallway / stairwell.
So (and I wish I knew how to do a poll) a little something will be sent to the person who can tell me...
... the amount of time (to the closest hour) it will take my wife to notice, once she gets back on Monday, that our house has been rejuvenated through the hard work of her long suffering better -half.
Over to you, who goes first?

So, d123 is in with (in my opinion ) a ridiculously optimistic 0.5 hours.
Anyone with a more realistic hourly figure?

Will the wife notice?, by rosstierney on Aug 28, 2010 1:58:04 GMT 1, to the closest hour? sounds like you're used to and unaware the smell of fresh paint is still present! i reckon she'll go to give you a welcome home peck on the lips, only to be interrupted by the smell. before wondering who's awful perfume has rubbed off onto you, she'll notice the grub free walls and before the minute is up, the chip free woodwork. then you'll get a good ol' fashioned neck to say thank you.

coach - the kids have been with her for 10 days. It's just been me at home. Come on, have a stab at it? How many hours?
(and I promise to adhere, to the closest hour, to the actual time it does take her. Send in UN inspectors if you want to.)

1 hour mate - like I said. Would have gone for less, but half an hour had gone. You'll crack. If she's had the kids for 10 days, you'll crack and tell her what you done.

Right, so, Coach has 1.0 hours.
IMO, very optimistic, but, we will see.

Will the wife notice?, by maroom on Aug 28, 2010 6:55:02 GMT 1, Well I know it's not painting but for some reason an old Swiss Tony quote popped in my head:
Well, hanging wallpaper is also very much like making love to a beautiful woman. Clean all the relevant surfaces, spread her out on the table, cover her with paste, and stick her up. Then you clean your brush, light your pipe, stand back and admire your handiwork. My wife will either spot things instantly or virtually never and it can be fairly random which is which. I'll guess 4 days.

Will the wife notice?, by wizzy on Aug 28, 2010 8:20:10 GMT 1, A. Hope you used the correct colour paint cos if you didnt!!!!. B. Why did you wait until she had gone before you did it? cant you work as a team or something??. C. Is it a guilty conscience that instigated this DIY? what you been up to then??. D. You trying to cover up some other odour with paint fumes? perfume??. Just being devils advocate here.
She will of course instantly notice the fresh paintwork, you stand no chance, all estimates of longer than 10 seconds are wildly optimistic and laughable.......OR ALTERNATIVELY.... Ok, so here's how it will go... She will arrive back at 21:00 and spend ten minutes in the hallway whilst you unload the car. Over the course of the next three hours there will be numerous reasons for her to climb the stairs, including, but not limited to, the kids going to bed, visits to the little girls' room etc. At midnight you will go to bed and she will go up to the top floor to check the kids. As she is coming down the stairs she will say "Have you seen the paint peeling on the top window?" Given the limited time i had, I did not strip back the window. It's a six foot bay window and would have required scaffolding and far more time than I had. My response will be a wry smile, coupled with "So you didn't notice anything else? The walls? the stairs, the skirting boards? The door frames?" At this point, the penny will drop............ or something like that ;D

Will the wife notice?, by Warm Gun on Aug 28, 2010 10:05:39 GMT 1, A 65 hour week AND you prepared and painted three flights of stairs?
You Sir are a machine!!!
I work a 37.5 hour week and can rarely be arsed to do any DIY at my home (in the week)
You've inspired me. Today I'm going to sand the top of my staircase along with the linen cupboard (I guess that's what you'd call it, it's actually empty) and give it all a bloody good undercoat......whilst watching whatever football match that sky show.
I hope your hard work gets noticed in an instant. I'm saying three minutes, max.
