What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Coach on Jan 30, 2016 1:27:34 GMT 1, My youngest has managed to attach an old (very old) Sony Walkman (mega bass!) to our slightly newer stereo. So I'm listening to old tapes of John Peel shows. It's so lovely to hear the great man's voice again. Hero.

Hey - there's a [non profit] John Peel Archive Group on Yahoo that would be very interested in those tapes! (or copies of).
They've got 100s of shows archived off old cassettes, but are always looking for those 'missing ones'.

Have PM'd ya!
Anyone else got any old John Peel tapes lying around?

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Deleted on Jan 30, 2016 23:01:10 GMT 1, Thought I'd post this link here, because it does highlight how difficult it is these days to make money from music. www.theguardian.com/business/2016/jan/30/rocknroll-stardom-live-music-struggling-bands-slow-club-brawlers
I don't think anyone's looking for sympathy, and certainly not for major record companies. But if we're not careful, our music - like a lot of our current culture - will be provided by those that have access to money.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by Deleted on Jan 30, 2016 23:47:44 GMT 1, Been listening to Mike Watt this weekend (The Minutemen, fIREHOSE, The Black Gang, The Secondmen, Dos, CUZ, The Stooges, Porno for Pyros, the guy Blood Sugar Sex Magic is dedicated to, etc, etc...) Love this video. It's shaky and the audio isn't the greatest, but shows the surprised crowd.

Mike Watt is Godhead Bass player. Thanks for posting this video. My Pleasure! After being a huge fan of his solo stuff, (his three rock operas are F'ing brilliant!), I'm finally getting into the Minutemen. My listening palette wasn't ready for it yet I guess. I'll be ready to dive deep into fIREHOSE a few years from now. "Chemical Wire" is a fantastic song though.
Here's a full performance of his first opera I found on youtube last night. For fans of Nels Cline, fast forward to 14:30 for the most intense Cline guitar solo.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by searchandrescue on Feb 8, 2016 18:16:18 GMT 1, thanks xxxxx this is really important, why even now I think I have everything (within reason) I taped a tape of as a kid either on vinyl, cd, or mp3. Paid for, yes paid for! young people. "Ripping" was something that happened to your school trousers after a too many games of playground footy! In my day you copied your mates pirate radio/ rave tapes, Michael Jackson LP's, taped stuff off the radio, but generally, if it was any good you bought the album / ep, waited till they came to your town (or someone else's) and saw the gig. If no one pays for anything the only people who can do anything are people with rich parents or relly's able to bank roll their endeavours while they wait for things to kick off. The days of starting a band on your dole money / YTS are long gone?? I appreciate that in the year of our lord one nine nine six a spice girls "album" was in woolies for 16 quid and on the fourth floor of a tower records buried in the "Soul Section" was black eye peas behind the fronts as a ยฃ17 import, that was f**ked and had to stop, but it can't go the other way either. No one does nothing for nothing, people have to get paid something. It happened a lot when I cut my teeth in the creative industries, when internships (anywhere, not just at yer high faluttin' saatchi galleries of the world) stopped being paid, there was a flood of rich kids who just said f**k it, we can afford to do this for nothing. Hence why we lose the richness of input from differing parts of the country / backgrounds / personalities.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by searchandrescue on Feb 8, 2016 18:44:41 GMT 1, thanks xxxxx, hated Blondie as a kid, it was the sort of music everyone's big sister was into. I was into MAARS,Paul Hardcastle, Steve Silk Hurley, Run DMC, Monnie Love, and Beastie Boys. Then went to art school/ uni and Blondie became drunk student girls music, so hated it even more. At that point illegal raves were still happening and I was into techno, rap / hip hop and was being introduced to world music, bristol, and beginning develop my interest in jazz. It wasn't until the film "We own The Night" came out years ago and I instantly fell in love with "Heart of Glass" from then on, maybe it was seeing it through a new light in a kind of historical context, dunno but some of the records are just built sublimely. Really beautiful.

Talking of Blondie. And forgive me if I have mentioned this before, I went to a launch party of the Blondie Remixes LP at Love Muscle at the Fridge in Brixton in about 1995. They had male Blondie impersonators lip synching each song. It's was a memorable night, to say the least! If you like Blondie and you like dance music, you will love this LP.

Some crackers. Diddy's power and passion mix of Union City Blue is great!
