Dran โข Learning To Fly, by londonbridges1 on Dec 21, 2010 23:09:45 GMT 1, These Learning to flys are quite remarkable. Jury out Jury in. I say they have deliberated and the judges ( us ) are approving the popularity. Not to mention how difficult it was to attain in the FREEZING cold weather and standing in the snow for 2 hours. Price will continue to appreciate. These like the other low editions wont be past around as much... ( isnt that an oxymoron though?) ha.

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by lighterboy on Dec 21, 2010 23:50:08 GMT 1, No black and whites have appeared on eBay, correct me if wrong. I think this print will go down as a classic and personally, for the price of a hand finished chalks as good as they are I would still prefer an LTF and an Exhibit!

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by gibbin82 on Dec 22, 2010 0:52:05 GMT 1, I still find it a little strange though, that this print has proved so popular selling out (50 b&w's) online within minutes and then quite a sizable queue for the colour and remaining b&w's, in some of the worst conditions we have had for years (I know, I was one of them). Yet the chalks which had a whole exhibition devoted to it, remains still available, considering that it is rather than being a bit of hand finishing, really a print with a whole new piece drawn into the background with the two peices linked from the end of the childs chalk and his imagination.
However it is clear that the Learning to Fly has really grabbed the limelight, with two prints already sold on eBay for ยฃ500 and another looking like it is going to reach ยฃ600 or more, it could possible become a very hard to find classic (only time will tell on this), maybe it is due to the relatively low original price point at ยฃ200 making them very attractive to genuine people, but Dran being fairly new on the scene (for releasing prints) did not appeal to the flippers as it could be a gamble, adding the fact that you had to be pretty determined to get one and therefore would probally want to keep it, results in the chances of picking one up unwanted will be very small, that is driving the price up.
To be honest I like them both but at the moment prefer the chalks, but this could change I suppose when my Learning to Fly is back from the framers and on the wall. Anyway I have posted pictures of my chalks and learning to fly (crap phone pictures, better ones later). My chalks is a simple and bright abstract (I went for a safe option rather than some of the others which I found little too dark and disturbing [divorce and death in particular]). By the way did anyone get a picture of the one that had the scream by Munch drawn on to the wall, despite saying that I avoided the dark ones I would have loved to have had this as it was superb, but I believe it has been reserved for someone at POW.

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by gibbin82 on Dec 22, 2010 1:04:09 GMT 1, P.S. it is getting even crazier just noticed that there is one of the Dran "Gamine" posters from editionpopulaire on eBay, that is already at ยฃ26 and this along with the other 20 euro Dran print from editionpopulaire are now marked as sold out, maybe the flippers have bought them all up to sell on eBay.

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by Wearology on Dec 22, 2010 1:54:55 GMT 1, Maybe it went so fast and it is re-selling for so much is because it is the best piece in the whole show - the bird on the newspaper pops and jumps out at you. It is family friendly and has a bit of XENZ vibe to it. Sometimes in the art world a great piece still can do better than an over hyped show filled with mediocre pieces.

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by swan on Dec 22, 2010 4:40:56 GMT 1, i had to get a roll of black sacks to protect it on the way back, hope every one i gave the spare ones to saved there tubes and bags from getting wet.
I got one of those, thanks Luis. Started chucking it down when I left the shop after picking up a colour, had to duck into a coffee shop to escape the worst of it, and the bags were doing the rounds an hour later when i rejoined the queue for the signing.
Pretty much sums up how friendly I've found the queues to be, and nicely rounds off my astonishing run of good luck with Dran releases this year, cheers!

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by Happy Shopper on Dec 22, 2010 9:41:09 GMT 1, The problem with the appeal of I Have Chalks, is that the kid has his back to you. If they'd done the same type of thing with the kid in 3D spec, facing you, I think it would have been even more popular.

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by JKW on Dec 22, 2010 14:40:41 GMT 1, I can understand the have to have on this print.. Stunning, and a lot nicer than some out now, a huge fan of the antique Newspaper too! Really? I can't...it's an ok print but ยฃ650+ English pounds? Do people think it's hand finished?
No it's idiots trying to keep up with the Joneses, it's a great looking print for ยฃ200, but at ยฃ650 I can think of a lot other "nicer" art to have at that price...

Well said i think that its just getting a little over the top. Having said that if you must own it then this is the market price for now.

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by gibbin82 on Dec 22, 2010 22:00:03 GMT 1, Much as I like Drans work this is getting really crazy now, ยฃ325 for the b&w print and as predicted earlier in this thread the 20 euro Edition Populaire poster/prints were bought up and now being offered on eBay for a ยฃ200. I really hope the seller of the Edition Populaire poster/prints really gets his fingers burnt on this one and nobody is crazy enough to buy them. While it is good to see an artist that I admire gain recognition and my prints go up in value, the flip side is that next time there are prints released, I and many others will now not stand a chance of getting in before the flippers. I am also still bemused that the Chalks are still available (22 of them) obviously POW did not do such a good job in "hypeing" these . Anyone who is interested in a chalks print pm me and I can send you pictures of the remaining prints.

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by Happy Shopper on Dec 22, 2010 23:18:32 GMT 1, Things go up and down. Dran is the new artist of the moment. Maybe it will last if his work continues with more hits than misses. Paul Insect used to be the same, but popularity has dropped a fair amount recently... I think because his originals were over priced and didn't sell well.

Didn't Saachi buy his entire show, and thats what kicked him off?

Hirst did... He's not really on the same level as Saatchi.

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by Ottomatik on Dec 23, 2010 0:01:33 GMT 1, A good example would also be A. Neate. He exploded around the time I joined the forum. You guys were quite smitten! Don't really hear much talk of him around these parts anymore. I also noticed his prints are not fetching what they used to. BTW-His new show pieces look brilliant! The opposite would be Parla. You guys were also quite smitten with Parla. At first I wasn't into his work. I thought you were all caught up in the Hype Machine. A year later and I find his work to be rather amazing. Parla's works are going up in price. ---- We shall see where Dran stands in a years time. IMO- I think he will gain momentum. His works appeal to a larger audience than the 2 above listed artist. Which gives him a greater chance of survival.

Yep. Apparently Hirst bought all the pieces from his first show. I think only a few pieces sold from the more recent one

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by lighterboy on Dec 23, 2010 0:24:46 GMT 1, Time will tell! Although the vibe around the place both in the queue and after signing suggests he already has a small but loyal following. He has shown both humour in his M&S show and street work as well as previous prints and a tenderness in LTF which translates after meeting him in person. I for one think POW's latest golden boy could be around to stay, whether he could become a legend remains to be seen. I will watch with interest and the strangest thing of all is if I had managed to get a grey CYW I would probably have missed out on Dran simply due to the excitement.

Dran โข Learning To Fly, by gibbin82 on Dec 23, 2010 1:07:58 GMT 1, I also think that Dran will be around to stay, looking past the comic book cartoon type work there was a lot of depth and variety to his other work, added to that is a very skilled artist with an eye for detail. He is also very prolific, the amount of material to see at the Marks and Stencils exhibition was very impressive, I first viewed it on the Friday and then returned the next day for the signing, I was then quite shocked to see how young Dran actually is, although the time he spent sketching in everybody's books suggests this guy is a workaholic, who lives to draw and loves it. The only thing I can see that may go against him is that there could be a danger he could be too productive and if he releases to much to quickly it may not be as beneficial to him as letting people get eager for the next release. I think that three prints in such a short time would normally be a bit much (chalks, Exhibit and LTF) but as LTF is the one that has captured the imagination, it probably would not have worked any other way. Also to me it is quite significant that the demand for each of the prints has increased as the works have been released (chalks still available, Exhibit sold out but not lots of people so desperate for it that it is rapidly pushing the price up and LTF going through the roof), also the method of selling and pricing has probably had a lot to do with it, as there is nothing like seeing a big queue of people, to make others think this is something very special and in this case they were suffering extreme weather conditions at the same time. Also the pricing has made LTF reasonably accessible to genuine art lovers who probably couldn't justify the expense of a chalks and therefore brought the print into the hands of folk who will be passionate about the work and discuss it on forums such as this one, rather than buying it from a gallery and then quietly hanging it up and admiring it only themselves.
