Banksy โข Choose Your Weapon Print, by twinkle on Dec 11, 2010 9:28:30 GMT 1, Last year was cool. It made me actually excited to be trying my luck again this year. The truth was the whole thing was an utter shambles and nightmare from start to finish.
Location: Ok, the queue at Berwick Street was stupid, it was started buy some die-hard fans and of course like sheep we all joined in. To stop this POW should have made it clear that the print release was at Commercial Street right from the start. Unforgiveable.
Timing: To save all the guesswork why couldn't POW state that release info would be available at say 6pm between a range of dates, also stating that no date has been decided on yet due to various factors, including weather (show that they have the punters interests at heart). Then we could have tuned in everyday at 6pm and seen if it was off or on. No guesswork queueing.
Queue jumping: This is saddest thing of all. By not issuing numbered tickets at the beginning and then again in the morning, all night we had people worrying about queue jumpers. Issue one numbered ticket early when people arrive and another one at a random stage early in the morning, meaning you need both tickets to get the print and thus stop guys turning up at the start and then buggering off and coming back the next day. If you want a print, fine, everyone suffers in the street overnight, but you all earn the right to have one. It's fair.
Flippers: Also take names and credit card details early on and prevent cash purchases as much as possible. The first 30 or so were an organised gang of flippers. One of the saddest things I've ever seen, especially now that there were only 170 tickets available, more misinformation.
Making it right: POW need to sort this out. It's totally unacceptable the way you've treated loyal fans. Get down to Commercial street with details of an appeals process, and tell people you will look at a case-by-case claim from those who have been badly let down in the queue overnight. Produce another colourway and sell that to those guys that have a good track record and can prove they suffered in the cold, and were victims of the queue jumpers.
A very bad day indeed....

Banksy โข Choose Your Weapon Print, by Standard on Dec 11, 2010 9:31:03 GMT 1, You can't keep selling something at 5 times cheaper than the market value without problems. Fans would have to save - it's not as nice as paying a cheap rate but we all want ferraris and big houses too. The simple bare fact problem is the instant profit.
if you are not willing to pay market value then you can still be a fan. I still think that some kind of system could be effective in that collecors/fans could buy at lower rates.
No more rant from me I just hope that some true fans came away lucky and hope that POW never do this again. Like Freerange says there is going to be a bitter taste after all this.

Banksy โข Choose Your Weapon Print, by jamieb on Dec 11, 2010 9:31:17 GMT 1, Glad I didn't go to the queue, I couldn't last year as I just had an operation but it sounded fairly good natured.
Sounds like last night was horrendous and we are still to see the full outcome.
Best release I saw was the POW open day, I went with friends, we all bought lottery tickets and POW raised a load for charity and to top it off my friend got to buy a VLH, I framed it for him and it's on his wall.
My 2 Banksy's were bought aftermarket but I can't afford to do that again. Plus they were from forum members and old prints so not flippers per se
The whole thing sucks, I not sure real fans can get one, and the rest of the releases at M&S have been pretty poor IMHO.
Happy Xmas POW

The edition size is pretty stupid. No wonder the queue got so mental.
People will be thinking, "Soupcans, Kate, Im gonna be rich"!
Entered for a grey anyway. Won donuts in the lottery before so you never know!
Surely the last London store release? Clearly too many crooks.

Completely agree with this - lots of time to get there and a good chance to raise money for charity. Freerange is spot on above too. Sorry to hear your tale Grafik and hope everyone in the queue for the right reasons is doing ok.

Banksy โข Choose Your Weapon Print, by otomi on Dec 11, 2010 9:42:43 GMT 1, if you like secondary market prices just buy it on the secondary market not everyone who gets a print at source sells it - according to EB around 10-15% of the donut release were "flipped"
a low availability creates the secondary market prices not the actual value

Banksy โข Choose Your Weapon Print, by Winter on Dec 11, 2010 9:43:12 GMT 1, Just woken up to hear about this. Sounds like a nightmare, sorry to all of those who have been horribly let down by a company that should know better. What is to stop everyone creating 100's or email addresses to enter the draw? It sounds like actual gangs are involved now who would happily create 1000's of email addresses. Chances of getting one of these prints are more remote than ever before.

What a nightmare for you Grafik, I know POW will have read all the accounts and yours is very genuine. They will not be happy at how this has played out and I hope they find a way to get you your print.

To think, I'd actually contemplated flying over to London for this weekend, but have to say glad I didn't now - hats off to all genuine banksy fans who braved the madness. Have to admit the whole experience doesn't bode well for the lottery - you have to wonder if it will turn into an inequitable balls up as well..............

Banksy โข Choose Your Weapon Print, by Agent Provocateur on Dec 11, 2010 9:56:57 GMT 1, Sounds like a complete mess! Sorry to hear all the hassle genuine Banksy fans have got in the queue Does seem like POW were caught with their proverbials down tho, but can't believe they didn't expect it.
On a related note tho, I did find it strange they say this on the website:
Due to the inexplicably high level of demand for Banksy prints each release comes complete with some rather over-complicated instructions.
But the total edition available is only 350! So there's less prints than the last two editions (NBG and Donuts), weren't there two colourways of the same amount for each of them!?
Why would they release fewer prints if they knew the demand had gone through the roof?
More importantly, freerange what were you saying about another extra print a while back? I'm intrigued
Slow clap. Very slow clap. Also i get the feeling that after tonight.. You will never see a store banksy release ever again and thats a given i think. More tomorrow..including a certain alternative print.J

true on the supply & demand but you are failing to see that the market value IS the secondary market value. POW are undervaluing the product which creates hype and unfortunately it's where organised individuals will reap the benefit. It also applies to those that somehow write scripts to bag all the online releases.
e.g. 1 organised low life with money (quite possiblty in to organised crime) + 20 hired hands + queue jumping = approx 30 to 40K profit in less than a day.
How many other instances can you think of where a product is sold in this way?
believe me, I wish it could be cheap and fair and for the fans.

Banksy โข Choose Your Weapon Print, by disclizard on Dec 11, 2010 9:57:41 GMT 1, Its been said before, but a timed release would solve all of these problems. Give everyone who wants one the chance to purchase, and the flippers will be less likely to buy @ the 450ยฃ price. Those brave enough to take a chance buying something they didn't like may wind up selling for less than the original price. Nobody would've queue'd for a timed release. Sure there may be tens of thousands made, but I seriously doubt that the flipper market would see it as a solid investment if it weren't so exclusive. I would imagine that there would be around 25% or less of the total amount of lottery entries in a timed edition. Beyond that, it would not likely effect current pricing of pre-existing editions.
Considering the proceeds are for charity, I would think that they could really make a difference with the kind of money they'd make in a timed release. Releasing 375 prints with the current demand in the market for Banksy prints is just making things worse. I'm surprised someone wasn't seriously hurt in the overnight mayhem.

I'm really not sure about some of the in-store colourways either. I know they're editions of 25 but the four apricot / yellow - orange / brown versions don't work so well for me.

Agree with this. I didn't get one but my mate did. Unfortunately it is in a portfolio under his bed but it gave him an interest and he has bought the odd cheap print since.
He is self employed and has had some tough times over the past couple of years but has never mentioned selling it. Pretty sure it will end up on his wall sometime.

They have said that 25 of each will be made available - I kind of read that as the edition size too but is it feasible that they may increase the runs on these?
The lottery colours are miles nicer. Red blue or grey would be lovely. ;D

Banksy โข Choose Your Weapon Print, by I like pictures on Dec 11, 2010 10:11:30 GMT 1, Script written purchases are easy enough to by pass, just do what facebook does when you try and post a link and have the purchaser enter two words from a box to confirm theyre human. At least with an online release no one gets trampled all fans from everywhere get a chance to get one. Very poorly handled by pow. To even suggest they didn't think there would be such a high interest in the release is naive on their behalf.

Banksy โข Choose Your Weapon Print, by otomi on Dec 11, 2010 10:18:34 GMT 1, some people will always be unhappy - a lot of people feel entitled to the print - a new fan deserves a print as much as an old one if not even more - an old school fan should have a rude copper and a GWB canvas on the wall - the idea of giving them cheaper to people that already have prints seams like a scenario thought of by people that already have prints
there is no god given right to a print it's all just luck
the q was unfortunate but this kinda thing happens - people started it without any info - thousands of people q'd for the new Warcraft game and they were available online at the same time - several people got trampled to death when the Ikea in Moscow opened - so at least no one got seriously hurt
if you were in line you had a real shot at a print compared to the lottery - it sucks that people jumped the line but then everyone in the line has to tell them to go to the back
if pow would have given out tickets last night than that would have been like selling them last night the point of the Q is to "work" for it and show dedication - it seemed like a fun thing last year - it just sucks that some people skipped the line
some people will always be unhappy - a lot of people feel entitled to the print - a new fan deserves a print as much as an old one if not even more - an old school fan should have a rude copper and a GWB canvas on the wall - the idea of giving them cheaper to people that already have prints seams like a scenario thought of by people that already have prints there is no god given right to a print it's all just luck the q was unfortunate but this kinda thing happens - people started it without any info - thousands of people q'd for the new Warcraft game and they were available online at the same time - several people got trampled to death when the Ikea in Moscow opened - so at least no one got seriously hurt if you were in line you had a real shot at a print compared to the lottery - it sucks that people jumped the line but then everyone in the line has to tell them to go to the back if pow would have given out tickets last night than that would have been like selling them last night the point of the Q is to "work" for it and show dedication - it seemed like a fun thing last year - it just sucks that some people skipped the line
