Who is the second biggest artist in the scene, by pezlow on Jul 6, 2007 9:09:59 GMT 1, Bit of fun for you for a Friday. I am assuming that we all agree that Mr B is the numero uno artist in the scene today but who would be your second biggest? I'll leave it up to you whether you would include pseudo-street artists like Micallef or Baldwin.
So who would it be: Faile, DFace, Neate, someone else?

To be honest Iv not reearched too much into the influences and background of micallef apart from a few awards he has won over the past 5-6 years, i just really really love his work and think they look spectacular in the flesh! i would however like to know why he is banded along with street artists/ graffiti artists
im sure you will enlighten me

Who is the second biggest artist in the scene, by pezlow on Jul 6, 2007 10:15:14 GMT 1, I think probably the only reason is that he is represented by Laz/POW.
His background is very much that of a traditional artist - art school, representation by a gallery known for helping up and coming art school graduates (in his case that was Mark Jason Gallery I believe), struggles for a while and then makes a breakthrough. I'm not aware of him having done any street work at all although no doubt someone can correct me about that if I am wrong.

Who is the second biggest artist in the scene, by barry cilit on Jul 6, 2007 10:55:46 GMT 1, Micallef is not a street artist, so it kind of rules him out of that scene. Faile beats Dface hands down in terms of style and maturity of work. I'm waiting for August 3rd to see what Neate has been up to.

Who is the second biggest artist in the scene, by barry cilit on Jul 6, 2007 11:04:04 GMT 1, with regards to my last comment..before i get shot down by all Dface fans, I don't mean DFace's work is immature, it's just that he has a while to go. Faile have established themselves with their style and work. A Faile piece is a solid piece, with their last show in NY proved how established their work has become.

Who is the second biggest artist in the scene, by numusic on Jul 6, 2007 11:06:23 GMT 1, There isn't a scene, you'd have to define an area for this question to have any relevance. It's just Art. If you mean Street Art, then it'd have to be work that's derived from the Street. Banksy, Fairey, Faile, Blek, Swoon, Bast, Zevs, Blu etc.. The American's are leagues ahead with outsider & low brow art.. Not sure that the likes of Micallef, McGee, Ryden, Krafft etc should be included in the street debate. It's a much broader area than anyone could imagine. It's branching off into all sorts of hybrids.. but still keeping elements that seperate it from the "mainstream", which is what keeps it so alive !... Art hasn't ever experienced this sort of growth and popularity..ever. It's pretty fucking amazing.. but it's definitely not a "scene".

Who is the second biggest artist in the scene, by pezlow on Jul 6, 2007 11:14:45 GMT 1, When I started this thread I thought about asking who is the second biggest street artist but changed it to scene to reflect exactly the comments you have just made Nu. I agree that "scene" is a pretty cr*p word.

Who is the second biggest artist in the scene, by dave313perry on Jul 6, 2007 11:23:59 GMT 1, Lets be more specific then...
Biggest artist outside of Banksy..Micallef Biggest Street artist..Blu (superb street art!)
Not sure if biggest is the correct term, maybe they are more like the most impressive IMO. not really thought too much about it, just what springs to mind

Shepard Fairey easily. Volume + prices + exposure + popularity + history.
Though I don't think he gets the credit he deserves(he will in time), the man is a straight up legend.

Who is the second biggest artist in the scene, by finsburyparkranger on Jul 6, 2007 12:21:34 GMT 1, Just taking street art into consideration I think Behind Banksy and Shepherd fairey, way back, there is a large pack of great artists, some have managed to secure the position in the pack because of very good work and great connections, others have failed as of yet on the public relations front but are extremely talented and have huge potential. In my opinion its a tight pack but the individual that looks like they've started pulling out of the group and who is showing clear determination, with proven greatness and who's work will unusually also be adored by the chattering classes and his raw energy and suicidal attitude loved by his contempories and who has recently been given the POW stamp of approval and who is already an enigma at a very young age... David Choe.
EDIT: Oops Neate certainly broke out of the pack too and is making good headway in third position IMO.
