WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by mike hunt on Jun 16, 2008 9:46:48 GMT 1, I hardly ever post anything now, and check the forum less and less. This kind of post is so refreshing. I haven't got any answers - things have deteriorated and I wouldn't know where to start saying how to fix them. I'm not the sort of person to post things saying 'yawn' or always comment on how boring the conversation is - I just stop looking. I'm not saying I was ever a valued member of the forum, but thought it may be worth sharing my reasons for lack of participation in recent times.

The two are, always have been & always will be inextricably linked.

hahaha thats because you only look at the surface "stephen"
because i don't sugar coat my views in platitudes like 90% on here it gets peoples backs up
sadly i don't care what you think of me, and i won't sling insults at you as i can't really form an opinion on you, as i haven't seen you write anything with any passion or personality yet.
though insulting me was a good start, you are beginning to warm up

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by dotdot on Jun 16, 2008 10:02:48 GMT 1, I still use the forum - and think it mildly interesting at times. Alas the amount of subterfuge to be found regularly outweighs the sense being spoken.
It's a shame people have been banned - this factor alone contributes to people who are not banned being able to effectively abuse the forum with a view to meeting their own ends.
This of course is only my opinion - and it is that which is being prevented from being heard from other previously valued members.
If people need help - they will continue to be steered hopefully in the right direction as for the bile / adverts - just like using a tivo - ffwd will be the order of the day
btw - i only use ebaychat / 100 posts - never bother with the rest - too much clutter - i think i may have mentioned this elsewhere

it's not a serious issue though is it alsbabar?! this surely is a place to shoot the shit and debate a subversive and ever changing art genre...
not pine for people who may have posted in the past and look back on that time with rose tinted glasses! your in the here and now so get on with it IMO!!

Though to be fair some of the bile that you have spouted over time has been shocking.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by alsbabar on Jun 16, 2008 10:21:32 GMT 1, i think you will find it is a serious issue for some, these former members offered a lot more than just the past, they offered factual information, heads up, knowledge, relationships (some are close to established artists) been part of the "street art scene" since it started, and why shouldnt people feel nostalgic, or a sense of loss, I would like to see these people back also, as I do miss their input also. If you want to see the future, simply look at the past!!

accepted and agreed - not going to pretend i didnt, but with time I like to believe that once meeting people and seeing the forum for what it really is, it made me less selfish about my own opinion, and you begin to appreciate other peoples views/opinions and their selfless motives

I do understand what you are saying pimp and in many respects you are right. It is bizarre though that there are a large group of people who are still involved in the scene, still turn up to all the shows, still "shoot the shit" on the lightside but don't post on here.
What makes it worse is that they have been replaced by a bunch of would be artists and fly by night galleries all looking to make a fast buck out of the perceived "mugs" on here. You've commented on a lot of that yourself and some of your pithy comments are spot on (although I perhaps would have put them differently myself )

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by buffin on Jun 16, 2008 10:31:30 GMT 1, I remember back in the day when young Snakes was a bad boy and look at him now. Just to say that people being banned should be the last resort.
However some things have happened on the forum which have been plain wrong. I understand fully why Stuey and Pez resigned as moderators but they were great at doing that job and we lost something when they resigned.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by loucastel on Jun 16, 2008 10:32:33 GMT 1, Two other observations which are meant constructively and I do hope will not be taken personally by the forum administrator, who I have always had a good relationship with (I hope): 1) A major problem with this forum is that threads such as this will eventually be buried somewhere where no one visits or deleted entirely. I 100% understand why Silky would want to do that when people make personal attacks against him and I would urge people not to do that as it doesn't achieve anything. However the fact that these threads get buried only leads people to feel even more frustrated and hamstrung and feel that they are not being listened to. 2) There has been an extraordinary decay of longstanding members of this forum - far more than the other street art forum whose name we are not allowed to type here. No forum can withstand the loss of so many quality and constructive members and there ought to be an honest and open discussion about why that is happening that does not descend into namecalling and offensiveness towards silky. Some of these members have been banned, a large number have left of their own accord or are still around but hardly ever post but nearly all of them are still 100% involved in the scene. So why do they feel they can't post here anymore. I'll try and list them but I know I won't remember everyone: How About No Shellshock Nuart Senna jjoschi/strangers almanac aza stuey09 monochrome foundation hunrig hankpank Lesroy LesbianWednesdays Beejoir Corblimeylimey CrackaWacka Dave313perry Finsbury Park Ranger etc etc I'm sure I've missed people off.... Time and this forum moves on, that is the way of all things, some people calling for change, others want to go back to the "old times". Forum members come and go, the majority on "the list" were the hardcore "clique"and as someone else said earlier you were either in or you wern't. Two factions ,one forum, not good. The forum now is a lot more expressive, ok, there is a lot of talk of flipping etc, but if you dont like it ,dont read it, simple. This thread will also die a death, but again, what is the point of endlessly debating the same tired thing over and over again? This forum is still an interesting place to learn about art and artists, and I'm not just talking about street art/graff, sometimes I get the impression that all some people want is their own little space without other people disagreeing, If some upset you, get over it and move on it doesnt nesecarily mean everything has to be changed to accomodate the one or two who feel grieved. long live the forum!!

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by Martin Whatson on Jun 16, 2008 10:48:25 GMT 1, I think during and after shows members should start threads on the chat board for comments about the artists work and the show.
And not only how much the pieces cost and that the prints sold out too fast.
I also agree on the way the general chat board has been used to sell, buy or promote things. Use the space given to post promotional threads. As someone say, it will give more attention to those threads after a while. Its also more fair to the people posting in the right place in the first time!

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by pezlow on Jun 16, 2008 10:56:15 GMT 1, Lou I really don't see the clique thing at all. I joined this forum at the beginning of january 07 and the old ebay forum in about October 06. Most of those members where here then and offered me help and advice and an ear to listen to. I posted some pretty incendiary stuff when I first started "Banksy prints are capitalism gone mad" etc etc but got back measured responses, helpful pms and genuine community atmosphere.
If there was a clique then it was a broad spectrum of like-minded members who welcomed new members and gave them advice and help.
I've always tried to be equally as helpful and open to those who have joined since me as those who came before me were.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by Daniel Silk on Jun 16, 2008 11:06:50 GMT 1, Good to see this thread staying reasonably constructive
Threads and Boards. Yep! some very good ideas and suggestions been raised, but I think one other point to remember is that YOU have the control over what gets talked about Prints/Shows/Money/Ebay. Threads that are be about buying, selling and values seem to be popular and they get bumped to the top of boards when you post on them. Your ALL in control of what and where things get posted ;D all I can do is try to spot trends, and provide the space for you to talk.
As I posted the other day, the idea of the new Street & Graffiti Art Chat board is for it to ONLY be about stuff on the streets ;D so no promotion from galleries, no print releases. If you like the sound of this ;D use it! and maybe it will be moved above the Main board in the future if you can show me thats what you all want to talk about.
Thanks! ;D ;D ;D

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by top on Jun 16, 2008 11:10:18 GMT 1, I (me me me) am here to learn what I can from anyone whom is willing to share information - there really is a lot of you that give freely.. I am wholly grateful for people's input, made me stop and think about it, gave me insight into the scene etc etc etc (so much to learn!!). I find my interests growing more and more as I find out why I like images/piece..and so on..
Used the information to save a few £'s on purchases too! ..just wish I had the initial outlay, then I would not need to sell stuff to 'upgrade' ..my reasoning has changed remarkably since I first joined, due mostly to others opinions being shared and discussed (on a forum?!..whatever next..)..big thank you people
Met/keep in contact with a multitude of like minded people from here and the light side..numerous laughs and cracking good shows with a few beers..priceless ;D
Would someone care to make a list (and post it.. ) of all these fly by night galleries and would be artists?! as there is much talk about 'them' and no names/site's etc being mentioned. I know of only a few.. ..that is, only in my opinion..
Would it be an idea for accounts to automatically delete (or something appropriate) if the user does not post at least once a month? ..or is it just about numbers here?
Banksy forum is just going through an evolutionary phase..
I am just biding my time until the revolution, then none of this will matter anyway.. ;D

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by arcam on Jun 16, 2008 11:25:58 GMT 1, The forum certainly has become stale, I can't remember the last time someone posted a thread worth reading. A lot of that is down to members leaving and many knowledgeable ones being banned.
To my mind the biggest problem is the numerous "artists" and "galleries" on here bigging up their work constantly. You do feel that you have walked into a pressure sales conference sometimes. There is that as well. At the end of the day first and foremost this is supposed to be a Banksy forum but that's certainly becoming secondary
The knock on effect is that it is also making the forum WAY to cluttered. Half the time I can't be arsed wading threw the countless forums and sub forms. All the Galleries/Artists don't need their own forum, many of which have barely been used.

A lot of that is down to members leaving and many knowledgeable ones being banned. why not start your own topics then?! moaning that there are "no good threads" why not be a leader rather than a follower? good call pimp

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE BANKSY FORUM?, by arcam on Jun 16, 2008 12:23:35 GMT 1, why not start your own topics then?! moaning that there are "no good threads" why not be a leader rather than a follower? I wasn't 'moaning' thank you very much. Read Snakes first post..and I quote..
I remember the good old days of when i joined this forum and people actually talked about art by Banksy, Banksy on the street and other up and coming artists and people generally helped each other out etc etc. …Snake has asked a question and I was merely answering it. The point I was trying to get across was that for one reason or another over the last year there has been a huge knowledge base drain on this forum. Which in turn is the reason why I think as Snake put it, the forum has gone down hill over the last six months.

and i think others have said that the reason isnt the lack of knowledge, but new members putting money before art
