HOLD ON A MINUTE, manchestermike the flipper, by onemandown72 on Feb 19, 2008 10:53:47 GMT 1, I'm really sick of this nonsense about flipping, it seems that this is born out of sheer resentment from people who can't make a decent amount of money themselves. The vast majority of people who complain that they can't buy something because the flippers have - when in reality the only reason that they are interested in the art is due to the value that they believe it will be worth. I don't often post on the forum, and feel that there are some interesting threads. But all too often, when everything else is stripped away there base theme is money. I have absolutely no problem with people buying art as either investment or for personal pleasure. This forum shoudl not be a place to criticise those motives for getting into art, more a place to swap stories and ideas about street art and how it is developing.

HOLD ON A MINUTE, manchestermike the flipper, by manchestermike on Feb 19, 2008 11:00:34 GMT 1, I'm fine, if people want to have a dig that's their prerogative and understandable...
Instead of writing this out again I've copied and pasted this from the D forum, so some of it may seem a little out of place... I'm not 100% sure (or anywhere near that) why I'm actually explaining myself, but anyway...
---------- From the D Forum -----------
Thanks for all the comments
The plan wasn't to buy to sell, it went straight on the wall the day it arrived and was there to stay. A combination of factors have arisen over the last week which mean I'm selling this and a few other bits. Some of the money (unfortunately not all) will be going back into art. I've bought something already and have my eye on something else, but unfortunately some cash is needed elsewhere too...
There's a choice of things I could sell and when looked at taking various views this is the one that has to go... for numerous reasons, although unlike some I do actually think that the "ugliness" makes this one... that's why I went for it over the other I could have. My girlfriend wanted me to sell something else, but like I said there is a reason behind selling this one instead
I suppose it will be tempered by the fact I've got my D Balloon Dogs original at misterframeman at the moment...
But anyway, a reason for everything and for everything a reason... thanks for lumping me in with "coolchris" snakes, but the fact still remains that this was in no way bought to flip... but people (not meaning you incidentally) will believe what they want...
And sorry cas - Even if you wanted it for cost (which isn't the figure you've given anyway) it wouldn't happen, if I offered it for cost - i.e. well, well under the market rate what would the point of that be??? What's the betting people who don't like it suddenly see the inner beauty and like the day after Bonhams I'm inundated with PMs from people who previously were slating something I'm selling ;D

HOLD ON A MINUTE, manchestermike the flipper, by Martin Whatson on Feb 19, 2008 11:25:00 GMT 1, In one way or another everyone that sells with a profit is a flipper!?
But looking at MM's collection it seems he has put more money into art than he has gotten back
Good luck.

HOLD ON A MINUTE, manchestermike the flipper, by holden on Feb 19, 2008 11:35:24 GMT 1, I bought my first car an Austin Allegro,s**t brown, but 1 lady owner. Loved that car. Didnt pull much, but it was tops! A year later I sold it for a 100 quid more than I bought it off that old lady and got me a noice Ford Fiesta. Didnt pull much in that either, but sure did love it....an improvement on the old you might say. Whats the point of the story??? Who gives a fuck!!

HOLD ON A MINUTE, manchestermike the flipper, by frank11 on Feb 19, 2008 11:45:35 GMT 1, Bottom line MM is one of the oldest members on here.....
Collecting long before the mass hysteria surrounding the LA Shows.
If he runs out of wall space it is only right to free room up by passing the work on to another collector/fan
Better than sitting under a bed in portfolio only to see the light of day after a good auction result.............

I always thought being the 'true blue' Aussie you are mate... The name Holden cam from your favorite car the Commodore! How wrong was I.
Reminds me of a true story...
I remember my best mate met a girl in the local pub and her name was 'Carmen'. Becuase of her name, my mate asked her if she was Spanish... (Fair enough I thought)
Carmen said: 'No... I love Cars & Men! And thats why my name is Carmen'.
Carmen then asked my mate what his name was and he replied: 'Beer-Cunt!'
;D
Oh yeah, delete this thread please Silky! Its pointless.

HOLD ON A MINUTE, manchestermike the flipper, by alsbabar on Feb 19, 2008 11:55:45 GMT 1, load of bollocks, especially after the abuse i received last week. I too have been collecting art for a long time, but there is a stigma attached to people selling art on here. If MM (and again mike I am not having a pop) chooses to sell his art, then good on him, its his he can do whatever he likes. However if a new kid comes along, and pops one up on ebay, he is a w**ker for doing so. I would agree with Somerset, there seems to double standards applied.
So in order to maintain consistency and not to create a "clique" - you should either tarnish everyone with the same brush or take up a different hobby, because this issue has been flogged to death, but yet its ugly head still keeps resurfacing (bit like mine).
Heres' a side story, I know a person who buys cars new from dealers in Scotland, travels then down to London, where he can sell them for a higher price - makes an absolute mint - you cant help but smile at his opportunism, and would take your hat off to him if you knew him.

HOLD ON A MINUTE, manchestermike the flipper, by seidbereit on Feb 19, 2008 12:19:39 GMT 1, Think you'll find Mike offered it to the forum before it went on the bay.
Correct, and if an offer had been received and accepted from the forum, which evidently none was, then I'm sure it would have been honoured as well, unlike the initiator of this thread who (from what I have read) messed around a lot of people with his own DFace collage, including letting some believe that a deal had been done, before selling to someone else and trumpeting on here about how fantastically high the price was that he achieved.
MM also stated he was selling to make way/funds available for another piece which to date has always also been the true reason, so totally a legitimate sale, by all accounts. Ridiculous contradictory thread.

HOLD ON A MINUTE, manchestermike the flipper, by Bram on Feb 19, 2008 12:25:01 GMT 1, The key here is in the definition of a flipper imo.
A flipper is someone who buys a piece of art for the sole reason (and no other) but to sell it immediately for proffit.
Anyone who does this should rightfully be criticized as they have stopped a true collector purchasing the piece.
Anyone who sells to re-invest or just doesn't like a piece anymore is not a flipper. Obviously if money is needed for an emergency then that also acceptable.
You know the flippers on the bay because they are the same sellers, selling new prints and their only interest in art is "can I make some money on this". Where as the majority of this forums member's interest in art is "do I like it / want it on my wall" and if it happens to accumulate value then thats a bonus, not a necessity.
imo MM is a serious collector and I wish I has a 1/10th of his collection.

HOLD ON A MINUTE, manchestermike the flipper, by top on Feb 19, 2008 12:37:04 GMT 1, ..good art will hold its value or become more valuable as time progresses, flippers wouldn't make fuck all if people just didnt buy what they are selling!! grrr!..cant understand why people would bother to give some cunt extra money just because they 'must have it' ..only got themselves to blame for high second market values.
Were all out to make an honest buck..
no disrespect to anyone here or flippers(they are just capitalizing on others poor self control really)
..anyway, I couldn't give two fucks ;D
..until the next release of something nice, only to find some flipper cunt/s has bagged the fucking lot ;D ;D ;D
