The Next Big Thing, by B.Mac on Feb 6, 2007 10:55:00 GMT 1, I'd say faile is safe after the Laz show, especially original canvases, matt small work is excellent, you have to see that in the flesh, I hear big things for Kennard & Phillipps, went to see Kennards original cut & paste work at the tate Modern, all good stuff...check out Haywain with Cruise Missile, see where Banksy got his inspiration from(!) Also hear that the 3 clocks print that was in Santas Ghetto is coming out....Blek le rat is established already, how far will he go?..Swoon, she does great stuff...Bristol Nick is coming out with some great work also...and what about the KLF man and the the dog...sold out FAST on POW.
Thoughts please..

The Next Big Thing, by foundation on Feb 6, 2007 11:12:52 GMT 1, Pretty much everyone on your list is a recognisable name after the last 6 months, Nick walker is bouncing up the inside after years at the back which is great to see, that fella has served his time and is still one of the most pleasant people on gods green earth, as much as I like Cauty, I think he is slowing down. I dont like Bleks stuff so cant be objective about it, similar feelings with Eric. Swoon will do bigger things if she actually does some prints, ( alot of people waiting for swoon prints). McAttee, Baldwin, and Lucy will all up their profile significantly, Micallef will be stellar by september as will Connor H. Faile remain to entrance me as they have others. so in answer to your pick one... Dan Baldwin, not too keen on his stuff myself, but think he has one hell of a year ahead of him.

The Next Big Thing, by guest2 on Feb 6, 2007 11:29:16 GMT 1, Faile....after the show in March...I think the canvases will rocket as you could pick them up relatively cheap a few months back...can't even find any now! I've heard the rumors about Phillipps/Kennard as well....will probably be carpet bagging time soon. I love C Harringtons stuff, only thing that worries me is... (as I like to buy to invest as well as to enjoy the art) ..if Laz can't sell the show out, who can?

The Next Big Thing, by slowmo on Feb 6, 2007 11:45:52 GMT 1, Like Baldwin's stuff foundation, good call. More artists to be tipped who aren't from POW, which realistically is at an all time high so all artists are really 'big things' on there already.
Adam Neate has finally joined the print world, but they aint cheap. He has good kudos in a banksy style for leaving his work in the street for people to take, but at present he is out of the range of most even as a print.

The Next Big Thing, by pezlow on Feb 6, 2007 13:39:55 GMT 1, p.s. I wouldn't really put Peter Kennard in this category at all. He is a photographer who has been around a long time and has been a "name" for quite a significant period of that.

Nice of Silky to let me know, no bad thing though, I know how upset he gets. The Next Big Thing, by tomhills1 on Feb 6, 2007 15:37:56 GMT 1, the only problem being you can't PM you foundation. so, as they say, with respect comes responsibility. not sure who says that but anyway. with you on the whole respect thing though. the fact someone has made numerous posts, ie 100's, would make me think they're advice would merit consideration. someone who had posted less than 50, maybe not so much. i don't like to judge or be judged by others and the respect system does just that. prefects, rank and file, heirarchy, class system and all that crap.

The Next Big Thing, by guest2 on Feb 6, 2007 17:06:59 GMT 1, I think Kennard is included as although he is well established already, with his photo op and the amount of discussion it caused in the Santas Ghetto etc he has crossed over to a whole new art buying market. Kennard & Phillipps stuff is quite impressive. Has the potential for large price increases in the future.

The Next Big Thing, by slowmo on Feb 6, 2007 21:10:48 GMT 1, NO QUESTION.... IT IS ADAM NEATE and honestly with no arrogance for what it's worth; I believe i have forsight for who's going to make it, all aspects of their work, themselves, the subject of their work, the longevity and appeal of it and just as importantly the way in which that work, and indeed they themselves are marketed.
Ok then, using your foresight, who will be big this year

The Next Big Thing, by slowmo on Feb 6, 2007 21:59:19 GMT 1, Nice riposte. Banksy's best work never made it to a print. The maid sweeping under the rug. You know in LA the maid is Hispanic? In london she is Black, no need to say more. Warhol, you would be hard pressed to be more specific than Warhol, studies of death, were they even art or just forerunner of rotten.com etc?

The Next Big Thing, by numusic on Feb 6, 2007 22:19:18 GMT 1, NO QUESTION.... IT IS ADAM NEATE That's good to know, i have an original of his i picked up 2 yrs or so ago, about 100 metres from liverpool street station! in terms of who's gonna make it next; it's not as simple as watching those following this troden path, this format or those that tick the boxes. Essentially a lot of the names are queing up behind the likes of banksy. It takes the knowledgable ones to dictate who's 'hot' by demanding their work, these people are intuitive and it's that that the future of the artists relys on. it's intuition. I wouldn't give you tuppence for a lot of the toys mentioned on this site. With all due respect to anyone who reads this comment, and honestly with no arrogance for what it's worth; I believe i have forsight for who's going to make it, all aspects of their work, themselves, the subject of their work, the longevity and appeal of it and just as importantly the way in which that work, and indeed they themselves are marketed.

The Next Big Thing, by numusic on Feb 6, 2007 22:25:05 GMT 1, Ok then, using your foresight, who will be big this year ok well if we're discussing this matter; in ref to the comment below yours; i don't personally find the subject matter of failes work all that sophisticated; for me i'd like art to be differentiated from graphic design, there's elements of that in failes work. I don't find all of banksy's subject matters to be sophisticated either, their execution and style help and certainly for me there's prints of his that i wouldn't adorn my walls with for that reason; it suprises me that the virgin mary for example was the last print to be sold; for me that's one of the best, the subject matter is much less 'gangster rat' and more mature, on top of that it has all the trade mark elements making it an all round classic piece that encompases who the artist is, and speaks of the genre of the work, through its carefully orchestrated drips, the natural framing is a bonus and the banksy logo tag at the bottom satisfies! anyway i digress; bast; appeals to me, i never got to get the pieces i wanted from the faile site but f**k it, i hope you get to! his style is very honest, he's produced strong work consistently enough for you to believe in, the elements come together to produce a very unique 'street; style with worth alongside the like of warhol, he's careful not to copy; but to move the style on, the techniques executed suggest his moving towards a very new direction; perhaps even more 'considered' than that of warhol, at least definately more daring and 'specific' in it's execution or message suggesting boldness, confidence and conviction from the artist. the 'next big things' don't come along every 5 minutes which is why i'm reluctant to reel off a load of names but; catch 'my' drift and work it out, i'm probably wrong; you're probably all right but avoid the try hards, don't bother with the ten toys that pop up amongst the talent, look at the subject matter, avoid one hit wonders, copy cats, and look for the added 'thing' that gives them hype. more importantly feel and therefore know who you think is gonna be 'it' don't f**kin ask me!!
ahhh, the jedi technique of art buying ! what the f**k are you talking about ACE ? Though must say I agree about Bast, he makes the ugliest work imagineable, and I love him for it
